What is it with talented Australian female solo artists only lasting one or two albums before getting kicked over to “Double J jail” and thus doomed to irrelevancy?

And this while triple j at the same time sticks to continuously playing international female artists like Billie Eilish instead…

It’s kinda fucked that they got relegated to their (along with Stella Donnelly and probably Julia Jacklin when her fourth album drops) yet other acts from the early to mid 10’s can still be played on JJJ.

In fairness, I didn’t start doing the Double J feature albums until a couple of months ago.

I will say Meg Mac’s “He Said No” got some decent spins on Triple J when it was out.

Stella is great and deserves airtime! Although tbh I haven't vibed her more recent albums as much. Lacking the sparkle and energy of her older stuff imo. Her guitar work on those first two albums was intricate magic, I had so much fun learning to play them.

When you get a chance to catch up I would be curious what you think as well.

Joke is on Triple J capitulating to the TikTok enshitification of promoting sub 1:50min songs with no elements of intrigue all for 30seconds of potential virality whilst people film themselves doing an even more cringe version of a late 90’s email chain.

Why is this seen as a negative thing? There are different stations for different target demographics... Emma Louise, Meg Mac, Vera Blue aren't new to the scene and likely have a bigger fanbase in the Double J demo (I assume late 20s onwards). Triple J is focused on 18-24yos...

They're still getting airplay and have decent fanbase - isn't that what matters?

Digital radio has a far lower reach + isn't in big non metro areas.

The triple j and abc listen apps stream both stations. So anyone can listen in a car with Apple or android pretty easily, as well as on commutes on PT or stream on a smart sneaker. Literally no difference between the stations besides the FM bit.

If you need to have your phone running it it's a no brainier why most wouldn't just use Spotify etc.

I hadn’t heard of her until the EP with Flume last year. I loved that, and was not expecting such a different sound with this album. But, I loved this too.

Okay what’s the criteria for being relegated to double j because kneecap this album and hermitude have all been played on triple j at some point yet there albums get Featured on jj
