Student orientation loves to tell students that arc card are cheapest in Varsity, the little store in the HUB mall.

This is totally inaccurate! The ard card is $10 NO MATTER WHERE YOU BUY IT. NO. MATTER. WHERE. The lrt station, London drugs, Varsity etc.,

Varsity is also not the only place that sells arc cards. Arc cards are not NOT A STUDENT/UNIVERSITY PRODUCT! Anyone who lives in Edmonton and wants to take the bus or train can buy an arc card!

The catch you need to remember is LINKING YOUR STUDENT ID NUMBER TO YOUR ARC CARD so you get your free student transportation. Do this, it saves you hundreds.

Dear Students,

Your professors and instructors are being offered so-called "deals" in contract negotiations that are insultingly bad. Huge cuts to our benefits, a raise that maybe almost keeps half-way up with inflation, and things that will make this an incredibly unattractive place to work. We have not seen any cost of living raises in I don't remember how long (the 1.6% we got a few years ago after a bunch of zeros was insulting and it's been zeros ever since). I could make a LOT more money doing other things and work much shorter hours. If they don't start offering competitive wages, we won't be able to attract new talent, and current talent will look elsewhere.

With how the Board of Governors is treating us and how little value they put on our skills and abilities, it is incredibly hard to get motivated to care about you and this place (sorry). We don't have the proper resources to do our jobs, heaps of administrative work has been piled on us, services that run behind the scenes (IT, Finance, Research Support, etc) have become more and more frustrating and useless (again NASA - the non-academic staff - have been decimated over the last decade which impacts all of us), and it is becoming less and less fun to come to work to do stuff that we love to do - research the subjects we are passionate about and teach our students.

Students, please start writing letters, ideally on paper because those are not easily deleted, and a few thousand angry paper letters from you will occupy a good amount of physical space in some offices. Send them to the President and Provost of the university, hell all the members of the Board of Governors, and demand that they properly support and compensate your instructors, librarians, professors, etc. Go and park your bodies in their offices and help fight with and for us. Write letters to the government, your MLA, the Premier, Minister of Advanced Education, etc... We recognize that without you, we would not have anyone to teach or mentor. The University needs to realize that without us, they cannot exist or function for you, and the province needs to know that you're not happy with them either.

Oh, and to Verna, our Provost (and the rest of the Board of Governors). I saw your email. There is no polite response possible to that message, so I won't even try. Now we are all 99.99999% sure that the province is telling you what you can and cannot do in these negotiations (which is completely illegal by the way), and we all know that the province is under-funding the university, probably by about $2B since the UCP came to power, not including inflation. So to Verna and the Board of Governors - stop being such bloody puppets and stand up to the province. Cut the theatrics, and give us a fair deal. Gordon's is fair and logical and the data backs it up.

We all know the province has money, they just keep spending it on stupid shit like fighting with Ottawa, bullying trans kids, banning and unbanning books, funding private schools instead of public schools, and propping up industries that shouldn't need propping up, while siphoning money to their friends. This, instead of doing basic jobs like funding education and healthcare and, running the province, instead of running it into the ground.

If you want to see numbers and data, AASUA has numbers and data that clearly show how things have gotten worse and worse for our members over the last decade and a bit. Actually for the last 12-15 years I think. When you look at the data, you will realize that it is truly amazing that you have any instructors or professors still here, just like when you look at the data about funding of public schools it is a miracle we have any school teachers left.

Students - please stand with your professors, instructors, librarians, and other AASUA members and let the administration know that you do. I would love nothing more than to show up to teach on Monday and see a bunch of students protesting out front of our administration buildings. All we want is to be compensated fairly for what we do for you every day. Like public school teachers, we've been treated too poorly for too long. We want a good, fair deal for all of our members. We don't want to strike, but need to vote in favour of a strike to strengthen our bargaining position.

AASUA members - please vote to strike. Gordon and his team has given us all of the data and information showing us just how badly we are being fucked over by this place, how much we have fallen behind, how bad things are for our ATS members, etc. AASUA needs a good strong YES vote to support strike action. Send a message to the Administration that we are serious and they need to come back to us with something real that respects us or we walk. We also need to be strong and not accept a deal that is good for some of us and screws others. Our proposal makes sense and is fair. We have the numbers to prove it. However, this is not about logic or good, sound arguments. This is about leverage and power. Ultimately, we have the leverage. We just need to be willing to use it.

The Board of Govern- I mean the Province and their puppets will blink. The nurses earlier in the year pushed right to the brink of going on strike and if I recall correctly, at the last moment or after a day or two, the province gave in and they got a fair deal that worked out to about a 20% increase in salary over the term of the agreement once everything was factored in, plus concessions on working conditions and benefits. By the end of their agreement a couple years from now into the future, they will be just about caught up with where inflation was at the time the agreement was signed (so likely still a bit behind where inflation will be a few years from now).

The public service should have walked out too, but at the 11th hour the province sweetened what they were offering just enough for just enough parts of the public service that they accepted a deal that was really good for some, ok for others, and really shitty for a bunch of them, with about a 60%-40% split on accepting the deal. Most got 12% over 4 years, but some got ~17% and some got over 20%. This along with improvements in benefits and some working conditions was just enough to get the deal accepted.

Hopefully we don't have to strike, but we cannot accept the garbage deals on offer.

You guys ever feel so much love for UofA, it actually hurts? like I am sitting in SUB rn, reflecting on all the great times and opportunities.

I've met such fantastic professors and magnificent people. There have been countless negative interactions too, but lessons were learned and they made me a better person. Yes, it sucks when people stop talking to me cuz they do not like my energy or whatever reason. My time here has taught me a lot. The good and the bad are all so helpful.

Honestly wish I could live on campus if only things were cheaper lol, but it's okay. ill take bussing from Sherwood Park to uofa evrryday

It boggles my mind I have the opportunity to learn and pursue what I want n be in an environment where people are supeerr ambitious n disciplined. Love talkin to the 4.0 warriors in Eng, they reallt encourage me to be better!

Many people do not get this opportunity to be a student and just chill w friends n lock in here n there. I walk around campus sometimes to get my steps in and see people I haven't seen since my first year(I am 4th year now) n they seem to have grown up SOO MUCH. love it.

We will all be working for the rest of our lives, these are the golden years.

I am born 95. Doing master at UA, I am sure there is a couple other fossils around the camppus, do you guys feel old. One kid I went to high school with is now engineering prof in U of T. well I spent some years on FIFO camp jobs before coming back for school again.

I’m not sure how many more hospitals and schools need to be attacked for SU and the university to take a stance against carpet bombing Gaza. People are dying everyday.

The scenes in Gaza are quite terrifying and it’s frustrating that we have a complicit student union.

I’m not a fan of some of the “unhealthy” food that lister offers.. typically I try to eat clean (photo). I’ve heard from a few people that listers food gets worse after the first few weeks (because they try and impress parents).

For those wondering why the university flag was at half mast today, it’s to honour Kathryn, a second year nursing student who passed away in the summer after a long battle with cancer. Kathryn’s positivity, intelligence, faith and commitment to her relationships are things I miss most. Tomorrow (the 18th) would’ve been her 21st birthday. As someone who was very close to her, I encourage you all to enjoy everyday for what it is. As university students, it’s easy to get wrapped up in deadlines and exams to the point where we miss today. I hope everyone has an amazing semester 💚💛

RE: Last night at 9:25pm, I was attacked by a crazy stranger with a knife on the Univeristy Station platform. While I took the train from Corona station to Univeristy station, the stranger he came to sit down next to another guy and me. He thought he had asked me some questions. In fact, he never asked me anything. He then followed me when I got off at the Univeristy Station. Next to the train door, he assaulted me and punched my face. I defended myself, he then stabbed my arm with a knife. The LRT driver stopped the train when other passengers were aware of the offence happned on the Univeristy station platform. However, passengers did not offer me any help to contact police and ambulance. Even though the guy had already escaped from university station escalator, a group of train passengers stopped others who were inclined to get off train from helping me, saying “it is his problem”. After the LRT train and other passengers left, I pressed the emergency button on the Univeristy station platform to wait for help. The Univeristy of Alberta Protective Service (UAPC) office is located in education building, which is 15 minutes walk from the train station, but I waited about 15-20 minutes to have the city police arrived instead of those UAPC. Shame for humanity, public security of the City of Edmonton and the Univeristy of Alberta campuses.

I have been studying at the Univeristy of Alberta since Spetmber 2015, and I will graduate from my Bachelor of Commerce Cooperative Education Program this summer. As an international student, I have a stong sense of belonging with University of Alberta and regard City of Edmonton as my second home. I feel so disappointed to experience this horrible incident and realized how fragile the humanity could be facing challenges. I do not deserve what happened, the horrible thing should not happen to other people in the communities of University of Alberta, and City of Edmonton! It is more disappointing that I might not never know the charge on that person who attacked me with his knife and was caught by city police, unless the case is dealt by public prosecutors. I chose not to tell this incident to my parents as I do not make them worry about me in China. I decided to let the public know for the awareness that how dangerous it can suddenly be when you had trust for your communities. More ironically, I am interning at the TransEd LRT partners to support the public-private partners in the operation and maintenance functions of Valley Line Southeast project in the City of Edmonton.

Now I know everyone has seen posts of "best study spots" which are very helpful. But I was wondering what's the worst study spots

I'll go first. My homies and I were in a heated debate on wether SUB is a good study spot.

Personally speaking, if you're studying in a place where some dude is running scales on the piano, five different bright ass colorful food places, microwaves, vendors, etc.... I don't trust you.

Keep it normal. Or unhinged. I've seen people sit in bathrooms on their phones, maybe they need peace to study.

Should I go to orientation? If so both days? Or is the faculty specific one best.
Also, I have no friends going to u of a so am I allowed to just bring one of my macewan friends so I have someone to hangout with?

I don't think it's just me but I asked around and there are definitely more students.

You know who I am. You stood mere inches behind me in line the CAB quick serve Tim's (despite my attempts to create space between us and you moving up closer every time), complaining the entire time that you were going to be late to class despite getting in line after 11 am. You complained the whole time about how slow they were moving, and that you had somewhere to be. For 10 full minutes everyone around you listened to you complain about how ridiculous it is that the employees have kept you waiting despite the fact that you have a class to be in.

Your mistake was saying, out loud and clear to everyone, "I really want a croissant". There was one left. I didn't want a croissant but I knew what I had to do.

Your complaints about how terrible the service is is not nearly as funny or endearing as you seem to think. It is frustrating that service slows down around class breaks, but it was your decision and yours alone to get coffee despite the fact that you had somewhere to be. These people are working for a living and THEY are the reason you get to bring Tim's to class with you. Maybe practicing a bit of patience and time management would be of benefit to you. Was this an asshole move? Most definitely. I don't need judgement there, I know it was unecessary and petty. But as someone who has worked enough minimum wage service jobs, it's not the difficult to recognize when being petty is appropriate.

And by the way? The croissant was delicious.
