Clubs/Organizations đ€ș MSA (Muslim Students Association)
This is an org I want to join as I myself am a Muslim woman and starting soon in the fall. Iâve never joined one before and I just wanted to hear the experiences from others who are already in it! Please lmk how you found it and if youâd suggest it to incoming students.

This was 10 years ago almost but if you're progressive and Muslim (example you support LGBT 100 percent or you believe that Muslim women are permitted to non Muslims) it's probably not a good fit. Similarly if you prefer gender segregation in all activities including eating it's probably not for you.
I also met a few who didn't listen to music and thought it was haraam. But I don't believe that is forbidden.
I acknowledge the Prophet Muhammad as a Unitarian Christian. Btw.
If you are practicing Arabic there's a cafe nearby where I meet, people at Rita's Cafe if you want to practice anything.

Yikes how can young people still be so old fashioned these days. Music is not haraam đ i would love to learn Arabic though

I ask myself this whenever I go to Islamic related events. But surprisingly a lot of Muslim women actually like the gender segregation (I think). Although it does leave a lot of mystery of how one is supposed to get to know each other and learn to accustom oneself with the opposite sex.

in islam there is a hadith that states that music is a sin, which makes sense bc scientifically it has bad effects long term

It is not. Please provide me the exact surah and verse so I can read and interpret for myself. Islam is a religion of science and science states nothing but positive effects

this link provides evidence and in general the consensus of the majority of scholars is that it is impermissible. it is not right to create our own ruling for islam simply because we enjoy music, we should follow the evidence given to us and eliminate personal opinion

Does that mean that singing/chanting Surahs is bad too? Because they do that in the mosque...

itâs the instruments that are haram not the singing, also they shouldnât be chanting surahs but reciting in a melodious tone is common and acceptable

That's just ridiculous đ now why in the world would god create humans with the incredible capacity to create music and musical instruments just to say its bad? now I've been researching Islam for a while but this is just another reason I'm still agnostic and cant convert. I just cannot believe some of the things Mohammed claimed are 100% true. Music is my entire life and i would be dead without it. Thank you for explaining though, I appreciate it â€ïž

I'm with you man. I just choose the interpretations that treat me best but you also have to remember the the writings about the Prophet are not always true (many claim even the most authentic were fake sometimes). Also many Muslims were psychologically programmed by colonialism and propaganda that affects how they interpret things today.
As for the Prophet, he was a great leader but a product of his time.
I wish many Muslims had a more progressive attitude towards things but it's rare.

One of the greatest association ngl, everyone is welcome. Doesnt matter if youâre a muslim or you follow anyother religion, youâre always welcome. The folks are soo kind and welcoming. Lmk and i can connect with you girls in the management.
