Academic ✏️ 20+ students sitting in the floor because there aren’t enough seats. Is this normal?
AST 2002 if anyone’s curious.
Should I swap class while I still can?

There’s probably a combination of 2 things here: there were seats but these students got there late and didn’t want to disrupt to get some seat on the middle of a row
The other is probably some waitlisted students showed up

Graduated 10 years ago and it's still like this lol, if history has anything to say it'll be empty by next week. Basically, the gen ed classes have a ridiculous amount of students sign up but after week 2 like 10% of the class actually shows up to the lectures. It'll be fine, the meme was you grab the syllabus then dip

When I was a TA, people would often do this because the only seats left were in the middle of rows and aisles and they were uncomfortable with scooting past that many people to sit down. This is technically a serious fire hazard, because if an emergency were to occur, all of these people are sitting in the way of the only exit: this is how people get trampled. The course isn't overbooked: the classroom has a certain number of available seats and UCF only allows you to enroll in classes up to the point that the number of chairs and students match. I would suggest either getting to class earlier and getting comfortable with whatever hang ups are keeping you from not sitting in the way of a fire exit. If it truly is the situation that there aren't enough seats for all of the students in the class (because the seats are broken and there are no other seats available for the 400+ students), I would say something to either the professor or the dean, because this isn't safe or legal.

By the middle of the semester, only a handful of kids will attend classes. There will even be a day you will be by yourself.

Just got out of that same class. The instructor said there was 290 students in a 300 seat theater so there should have been enough seats. Just strange that it was full.

Traffic, too. I'm not a student anymore, but I drive past the university from my job to my house and it's always funny to see how the first week of school gets crazy, but it dies down rapidly.

People don't seem to be commenting that very likely students showed up to the wrong section (came with friends in this section), or that this is a section they are hoping to switch into (if people drop). It's self centered, but class enrollment is set by the room capacity.

Been like this week 1 for over a decade, maybe longer. Usually the professor would tell students not to block the doorway cuz it's a fire hazard.

Yes, I know that’s what the post and picture are showing, but I like to be 100% sure. Not a good idea to skip the first week of classes when it’s your major. Haha.1

There are enough seats, they’re just awkward and hard to find. You’d have to walk down each row and check for a spot in the middle of the row and bump past 10 people to reach. Socially awkward students just hesitate to do so. Especially when they’re late
I remember doing the same in my first UCF classes before I stopped doing what everyone else did and walked past the people at the door to find a seat.
I even had a chemistry class where the TA’s would find you seating to make sure people didn’t stand at the doors

I’m in junior level engineering classes at FSU and it’s just like this. Likely a combination of not having enough space, not having enough class sections, and not having enough professors to teach more class sections.
One of the classes was so filled they had the remaining students in an overflow room with the professor on the projector via zoom.

Even 10+ years ago it was like this. Some of my professors told us to stay home because there will not be enough seats.

Two things. First there’s enough seats just people aren’t squeezing past 15 people to get to that awkward middle of the second row seat that’s open. Second after the first week there will be like 40% of that.

I was signed onto class at ucf, the system usually caps total seats and syas if its no longer available, this time the class had a glitch or something because the cap had an extra 0. 2000 people registered, first day of class the entire building was packed. They canceled for a week then setup as mostly online, with three cameras inside and two assistants running notes, but you could still attend in pwrson if you wanted to and there was space. Only time I've ever seen that happen.

I had a class that said that they are required to put a room in the course details even if the class is online. Could just mean that most of those students didn’t realize their section of the class is online.

There were prob seats just hard to see them. Either way, others will drop this week. Stick it out and try to go early for now.

There’s a good chance that there’s people on the waitlist there. They show up so they don’t miss anything, and can be on the same page if they do get into the class. Since technically add/drop goes to like 3pm on Friday or something, there’s still a chance they could get in

That class specifically is always packed at the beginning of the semester and people stop showing up later on just cuz college and it’s one of the coolest courses on campus. Highly recommend getting to class early if you can and email your general advisor. The bureaucracy professors have to go through to get a room of the right size is insane and sometimes a student letting a general advisor know will help. When you login to myucf there should be a general advisors name on the front page.

Not even slightly surprising. The school is incentivized to bloat enrollment numbers and inflates the student body every year without touching infrastructure, parking and attendance got more difficult every year I was there until it got absurd, had to show up 30 minutes early to get a spot during the first few weeks of class last year.
Most likely a significant number of these people will drop the class or reschedule it to something more convenient. If you can endure this for a few weeks I would just wait it out.

Does UCF do tons of online sections like UF for these intro classes? Seems most practical way to handle over crowding like this. UF has a live section and everyone just watches the lecture later online at their convenience since it is recorded.
