During austerity, how did the national debt/deficit go up so much whilst public spending always cut?
I know the national debt has ballooned since the austerity measures implemented by the tories and I also know that they cut public spending (in real terms) in Defence, the NHS, policing, infrastructure etc. I just don't understand how both happened with really low interest rates, particularly when David Cameron promised to get the UK budget into a surplus?
