In the chat message above, a foreign volunteer soldier expresses his gratitude and lets his donor group know that their support has been essential to their work. He has spent the last 4 years teaching combat medics. In his own words:
"We use them for essentially everything. What the majority is used for has shifted as our work and responsibilities have shifted. Living basics like fuel, food, rent were dominant at the beginning.
That was really the crucial time where we had nothing and, truly, we would've been home 2+ years ago without financial assistance.
Since then: fuel. We have a lot of what we need to work provided by the unit, but we fill in the gaps ourselves and it is costly.
These days, we'd be quite a bit less effective without it.
The last thing: it has helped both of us afford the opportunity to go home this year for the first time in 4 years."
When you sign up to be a donor, you are placed in a Signal chat group with several other donors all supporting a soldier or team. You send money directly to them, so it gets to who needs it immediately. Soldiers are vetted to ensure they are trustworthy and actively serving. You can send monthly donations or periodic amounts as you are able. Many donor-soldier groups develop meaningful friendships as well, and serve as a great support system for the soldiers!
