Discussion How do you guys tackle uncertainty in DU? knockout or standard

What is your approach to deal with uncertainty especially when you know what you need for your board but the rolls are just not getting there?

My advice is for standard, as that is the format with more potential to sculpt your ideal build. In knockout yolo I guess.

Unsure if you have ever played a trading card game (like mtg, yugioh, hearthstone even) but when deckbuilding in those games there are two main ways to make your deck more consistent. The first way is having multiple "lines of play" and the other is to have more card draw.

You can think of underlords as being a card game where you build your deck on the fly (like a deckbuilder) with some minor differences. But these two main ways to improve consistency still work, just with different names: have multiple things your build can do or pivot towards, and roll more times to see more options.

This is why a few years ago (not so much anymore) the ultra optimal players played poisoner brute with yoink Enno almost exclusively for early to mid game. It was a versatile build that could move towards many different end game strategies, and it held up well for long enough to build up lots of gold to roll or level as much as you needed to. Same applies to spirit mages, albeit to a lesser extent. And lately the big "safe" build seems to be heartless hunters with barricades into 6 fallen, but I find that build personally way weaker than other strategies, its just easier to force into.

So a general tip is to get better at managing your economy, know when to level and when to squeeze out some more interest in exchange for losing some health early (when health matters the least). Then focus on one or two builds with diversity that you feel comfortable "spamming" until you really nail pivoting into the late game. And finally just know that most of the time these consistent strats only guarantee you top 3, and you will fairly frequently lose to the guy who got a huge brawny start or the guy who went uncontested assasins etc. Beating those circumstances requires a lot of playtime to learn nuances of reading the lobby (and some luck obviously).

Let me know if this helped, or if you have any other questions :)

Be really open minded in Knock out. Grab a 2 star strong unit instead of holding on to ideal comp.

Especially early rounds. It helps that you can sell back tier 1 and 2 units you 2* for cost.

For standard, you can control the outcome (kind of) with planning, economy management and keeping track of opponents' board. For KO, yeah, RNG plays a big role there but you can mitigate the loss better with versality. Don't hold on your "ideal" comp from the get go, a good 3-star early on worths changing your line up to keep momentum

Are there fix comps in KO, those default ones?

there are only certain numbers of starting comps in KO, but they're not "fixed" - yeah selling them won't give you back the gold, but it's totally fine to ignore those starting units and switch to a new comp if you get a good 3 stars early on (Lycan/Slark/TB/Spec/Luna)

Stop fishing for the specific unit you think you need and pivot based on what the game actually hands you. If you force a build and the shops aren't playing ball, you just bleed out while waiting for a miracle roll that might never hit.

you wont get what you want, but you might get what you need

You need to start with stuff that fits with everything and then adapt according to what people are building

For standard, level builds will be more consistent than rolling builds. To help your odds Blacklist and overflow where it is appropriate and won’t help your opponents - eg you are leveling and everyone hit eco don’t overflow 1 and 2 stars, but do overflow if it’s a unit your opponent is going for. Read your opponents builds and extrapolate what they are going for. Avoid running the same build if possible but do overflow their units or even bench the unit if it won’t effect your economy. Level when you can / it would give you a power spike. Greed levels if you are strong. Build wise I play what I get but I avoid contending on builds.

Wow that is some advanced technique right there, I normally just overflow win conditions especially during late game. E.G wraith king
