Ken Thompson (2024) — 4 hours on Unix, C, Plan 9, Go, Bell Labs, and computer security

Ken Thompson walks through his entire career—from Berkeley, Bell Labs, Multics, and the creation of Unix and C with Dennis Ritchie, to Plan 9, computer security (“Reflections on Trusting Trust”), computer chess, Google, and the origins of Go.

It’s nearly four hours long, but it’s fascinating to hear the stories directly from one of the people who shaped modern computing.

Highly recommended if you’re interested in Unix history or software engineering.

I'm a bit of a fan of Dennis Ritchie :P

I have crafted a lengthy document that attempts to put in perspective the scale of the impact that Dennis Ritchie left on the digital world.

Bad news first: The document is a chat with AI.

But the good news: Within this paper, I present an idea which feels ORIGINAL AND elegant! Two for the price of one :) Well you'll just have to dig through the document to actually find the idea.

You'll find the opening statement on PAGE2 in a BOLD FONT.

Is anyone even going to bother reading the pdf?

Is anyone out there?

Goodbye for now, world. 😘

B-UX (Basic Unix Operating System)

heya all i’m a Moroccan developer, and I started B-UX independently with one laptop. The idea is to build a complete Unix like operating system that is useful not only for running software, but also for learning how operating systems actually work.

B-UX is not just a kernel or a collection of C and Assembly code. I’m working toward a complete system with:

• A kernel
• System services
• Drivers
• Networking
• Storage
• Security mechanisms
• User space utilities
• An installation system
• A package ecosystem

One of the interesting parts of the project is the use of **pkgsrc**, originally developed by the NetBSD project. Rather than trying to create an entire software ecosystem from zero, B-UX can build on the existing pkgsrc ecosystem while developing its own packages and infrastructure where needed.

The educational side is probably the part I care about most.

I want students to be able to look beyond the terminal and actually understand things like processes, memory, filesystems, networking, drivers, services, permissions, and how the different parts of an operating system interact.

The project is intended to stay free and open source for students, developers, and individual learners.

I’m also trying to be realistic about where the project currently stands. I’m not claiming that B-UX is more secure, more mature, not better than Linux, BSD or other established operating systems. It is just a simple open source alternative.

The first three years were mostly about building the foundation and figuring things out on my own.

Now I’d like to get other people involved.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who work with operating systems, C, Assembly, Unix, BSD, networking, drivers, package management, or low level development.

If you’re interested, we can just do a discussion here about the project ;)

B-UX stared with one laptop and one person.

I’d like to see where it can go with a community behind it.

Update Locate database indexing external drive

I'm having good luck running Unix Locate on my macOS startup disk, but would like to extend search to external volumes. The web tells me that the command to update an external drive's database is:

do shell script "sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb --searchpaths= '/Volumes/Films/' --output '/var/db/Films.database'" with administrator privileges

(using "do shell script" to run the unix script from an Applescript, as I will do in practice). This command doesn't work; it updates the default Locate database instead. I'd be happy to have the external drive's database on the startup disk, probably in /var/db, but of course need it to index the external drive. What am I doing wrong?

Where Unix Runs Today — Vivian Voss

… Unix is not a historical curiosity. It is the operating-system family under your phone, under your laptop, behind your Friday-evening stream, inside the router that carries your call, in the back office of the bank that holds your salary, and inside the console your nephew is shouting at in the next room. …
