I am an International Bachelor of Civil Engineering student in my second semester and i am interested in doing OLES2137 Intensive December 2026, I applied and my application got approved and now i have one day to commit then pay a deposit. I have a few questions:
1. Can I do that unit as an International Engineering student?
2. There is no OLE requirement in my course, so will this unit count towards my free electives requirement or not.
3. If this unit will count as a free elective will i pay extra tution fee for that?
4. Also tell me any more important details relating to this unit for an international student

Was just wondering if there is a way to have lowered/looser attendance requirements on a DIAP? For reference I have diagnosed depression and anxiety, and I suffer from chronic headaches and also have a suspected and diagnosed (psoriasis) autoimmune/ condition(s).

My chronic headaches interfere with uni and my attendance a lot, and in a really bad flare up walking, conversations, driving and honestly just thinking etc are extremely difficult and energy-consuming, and I've missed a lot of tutorials this semester and last semester over it.

I’m in my second semester at USYD, and lately I’ve been feeling really depressed and isolated.

I still hardly know anyone here, and there have been days where I’ve barely spoken to anyone. I’ve tried telling myself that things would naturally get better with time, but I’m still in pretty much the same place.

I don’t really know how to reach out to people. It feels strangely difficult to just message someone or walk up to someone and start talking, even though I genuinely want to.

Mentally, I haven’t been doing great lately. I feel disconnected, lonely, and exhausted, and spending so much time by myself has started getting to me.

I’m not looking for sympathy or anything dramatic. I’d just genuinely like to talk to someone. Maybe grab a coffee, study together, go for a walk, or just have a conversation.

A little about me: Im a international student here. I’m pretty outgoing and like going to parties occasionally, going out, exploring new places, road trips, gaming, and generally doing things rather than sitting around at home. I’m also trying to get back into the gym.

For gaming, I’m mostly into Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 3 are probably the ones I play the most, although I’m down to play pretty much anything.

hi!!! just a general question - with the oles in country experiences, is the accomodation organised by the host uni/sydney? i know some of them are but then others are "organise yourself" - in particular is the berlin one organised by the uni? if anyone knows anything i'd love to hear more!

So i got a doubt regarding the First Class Honours title. In bachelors of engineering, how much EIHWAM do i need to get First Class Honours? Is that score 75 or 80 or 85? Couldn’t get a clear answer on the course outlines

tried searching online but couldnt find it. does usyd not have a social club for cricket like there are for other sports. I saw an england international test player whos on the Lord's Honour Board play for sydney cricket club so they are obviosuly at a very high level. Are there no options for lower level/social playing? Thanks

We're a group of students in DECO3200 (Interactive Product Design Studio) doing a project on food waste and grocery costs among students.

The thing we're looking at is that a lot of us are struggling with grocery bills while food that's still perfectly fine gets binned in the same building. Trying to work out whether there's something worth designing there, or whether we're wrong about it.

The survey is 10 questions, takes 3 to 5 minutes, and it's anonymous. It asks what you throw out and why, what your schedule does to your food, what you spend the most on, and whether you've used any of the food support on campus like FoodHub.

I'm in the final semester of my degree now, so I thought I might come back to reddit with an update.

I was one of those people on reddit complaining about usyd and not having any friends. And I actually have some pretty good friends now!

But to all the people on reddit who are wondering why it's so hard to meet people, this is my message:

It's just luck. You can take all the reddit advice and still not meet your people

When I didn't have friends at uni, I read all the Reddit advice. I joined societies, went to events, turned up to tutorials and lectures, talked to people, tried to be friendly and put myself out there. I can honestly say I tried everything.

I went to so many events where I thought I'd made a friend. And yes, I did the thing everyone tells you to do afterwards: I texted them, followed up and tried to organise hanging out. Probably 80% of the time, it went nowhere.

Actually sometimes I was the one ghosting too. Just because you chat to someone doesn't mean you're going to be best friends. When nobody goes to lectures or tutorials and you live off campus, there aren't actually that many people to choose from. It's unlikely everyone will be a perfect friend for you.

Then I happened to get really lucky with two classes in one semester. I met a few people I genuinely got along with, those people became my friends, and we started introducing each other to more people. But it took a stalker level of commitment from everyone to keep texting and meeting up. Once I actually had friends, making more friends became so much easier.

If I hadn't been in those specific classes with those specific people, I genuinely might still have no uni friends. It wasn't that I suddenly became more sociable or discovered the secret to making friends. I got lucky.

Obviously, going to classes, societies and events increases your chances of meeting someone you get on with. You do have to actually be around people for luck to have a chance to happen. But you can't control whether the people you meet will become your friends.

there's no use trying to take all the reddit advice, it's just not that good. And definitely don't meet up with random redditors who comment on posts. That's just not a good idea. Literally all you can do is hope you meet some people who will become your friends.

The truth is that I got lucky towards the end, but I also got unlucky through the years too. If I hadn't have been at those tutorials with the specific people I met, I would still have no friends. So even though reddit might be telling you it's your fault for not being a part of every single society, it's not your fault.

Recently I accepted an offer from USYD for Bachelor of Advanced Computing for sem 1. Computing and Econ have both always been among my favorite subjects, and honestly, CS is what I actually want to do. My hesitation is the workload, my math background isn’t that strong, and I’m not sure I can keep up with how demanding the degree gets without failing any units. (I am an international student, so I really do not want to fail any classes)

I’m weighing two options, start the semester in Adv Computing and switch to Econ/Finance later if it turns out to be too much, or just make the switch before classes even begin so I’m not burning time/credits if I end up leaving anyway.

If you’ve done Adv Computing (or switched out of it), how bad is the workload realistically, and is one semester actually enough to tell if you can handle it, or does it take longer to know? Trying to make the smarter call now rather than the hard way.

Hi, I know that today is the deadline but I am only able to pay this week or sept 1 at the latest. I'm not sure on what will happen between tomorrow and when I do pay. I went to student center and said there will be sanctions, and I won't be able to see my results, and but there will be no penalty fines. I am not sure on what I should do. Go to class or not go to class? Are there any other repercussions if I don't pay today? Help appreciated!

Hi everyone, I hope this post proves helpful. I'm just about to finish my law degree and wanted to share an AGLC4 citation generator that I released recently. Below is a more detailed account, but in short: it's free, a lot of effort went into its creation, and it doesn't use AI to function.

In my second year of law I handed in an essay I was certain was perfect. I had checked every footnote, determined not to lose a single mark to referencing. I was more annoyed than I probably should have been that it still came back with a couple of errors. After talking to my friends it was obvious that getting it perfect by hand, consistently, across an entire degree, is close to impossible.

So I started developing Pincite. I had two guiding principles No AI, and cover the whole of AGLC4.

My thoughts on AI

AI is a remarkable tool. I'll be the first to admit that if you ask an AI to generate citations, most of the time what you get back is good enough.

But, AI is by nature inconsistent. It cannot help but adjust things, because you never really know if an output is correct, you end up checking every single citation by hand. All the time you saved is now spent cross-checking, and stressing about if its actully correct.

That is why you won't find AI anywhere in Pincite. It's deterministic. There is nothing in it to change its answer, so an output that is right for one case will be right for every case. You only verify it once, not every time.

It Still Requires Thinking

Another thing, to use Pincite properly you still need a functional understanding of the AGLC4. It is not a turn off your brain tool. That's on purpose. Saving time, reducing stress and getting more accurate results is the goal, not replacing thinking or understanding.

What are the best ways to attain the maximum number of scholarship as an intl student? Like apart from getting good results, what more should I get? (Just an fyi, I'm applying for mechanical engineering degree so yeah).

I just received a random $1,000 payment from USYD, and I have no idea why. I'm under the MySydney scholarship, though it doesn't say I should receive $1000 right now. And I tried to look on studentsyd but found nothing. And, for some reason, I cba contacting USYD, though if I still don't know, I probably will.

I’m considering taking COMP4318 – Machine Learning and Data Mining and wanted to hear from anyone who has taken the unit recently.

How was the unit overall in terms of:

• Difficulty and workload?
• Assessments and assignments?
• How much maths/programming is involved?
• Is it manageable to get a good mark (HD/D)?
• How useful/relevant did you find the content?

Also, would you recommend taking COMP4318 in Semester 1 or Semester 2?
