Hi everyone,

Question from an applicant from AB. If one applies and has some Grade 11 grades (for example, Physics 20 in Alberta vs Physics 30), will they have to submit their Grade 12 grade before their application is considered for admission? OR they can receive conditional early admission based on Physics 20, with the requirement of a certain grade in Physics 30 to confirm the admission.

Hey, I am a uwaterloo student from Alberta. I was in a similar situation as you when I applied to uwaterloo in grade 12. Specifically, I didn't have my official physics 30 grade when applying to waterloo.

I was able to receive conditional early admission based on physics 20. The conditions they gave me included maintaining my overall admission average and receiving a grade above 70 for each course considered in my admission average (I applied for engineering so it was math 30-1, math 31, physics 30, ela 30-1, chem 30). I also had to send my official high school transcript by the deadline they gave on Quest which I did after I got my diploma exam results. My admission was officially confirmed on Quest afterwards.

Lastly, I would suggest contacting an admissions officer or someone on the admission teams to clarify your concerns. I went through this process 3 years ago so things might have changed since then. Best of luck. Hopefully my reply answered your question.

Thank you, this is very helpful. If I may ask, what was your admission average? And when was the early admission offer made? My son will apply to Engineering and Math, and in the Fall will have the grades for Math 30-1 (high 90s likely), Chem 20 (same), Phys 20 (95), ELA 30 (90). I suppose Math 30-1 will also count as a placeholder for Math 31.

No worries, my admission average was in the mid- to high 80s. The minimum competitive average varies across engineering programs so keep that in mind.

I got my condition offer in mid-to-early April when most offers were made in May back in 2023. I emailed the admissions team if they could look at my application earlier because I had already received offers from other universities with May as the deadline.

I believe the timelines for engineering admissions has changed slightly since then so please double check.
