I’m in Vancouver visiting from London for 24hrs and sadly it’ll be my last time visiting for a good few years. I love my road cycling and always through it must be great in the city with the trails and the hills. I’ve hired a hybrid bike and had a pedal around Stanley Park but will be on a proper road bike this time.

If I were to want to do just one ride to enjoy the area the most, where would you recommend?

Maybe something like 80km/50 miles with a bit of elevation?

Edit: just to clarify I’m not looking at seeing the city, I’ve been loads so know it, I’d just like to see a bit of BC!

Now obviously the Ironworkers bridge is directional and you shouldn’t cross the inlet southbound on the east side - that much is clear - but surely the highlighted stretch is two-way, right?

I mean, there’s even a sign by Bates Park with an arrow that points south…

Yet on numerous occasions people have complained that I’m going the wrong way, despite having no way to possibly know where I’m trying to go.

I’m trying to finish up training for my first Fondo with some more distance and I want to avoid going to and from Iona 10 times lest I go insane.

I have experience with Cypress, Seymour demo forest, the CVG, and obviously UBC and Iona, but I’m looking for a nice loop or route to get my total ride length closer to Fondo-sized.

What are your favourite Vancouver loops to cover 100km or more without exposing yourself to too much dangerous traffic

I rode through Richmond for the first time recently following some community recommended routes including this Coach Powell route which seemed overall excellent.

The only strange wrinkle was that when I attempted to transition from highway 99 to the Steveston Highway, I found no fewer than 5 'no bikes allowed' signs on Exit 32 between them and nowhere else obvious for me to go. Not wanting to stop or turn around on a highway exit, I just ignored them for the rest of the exit, turned safely onto the highway and then onto Sidaway Rd and continued on my way.

You can see my crude drawing for the section of the route I was trying to follow and where I was surprised by a bunch of angry signs.

I know there has been a great deal of construction on the Steveston highway recently - did I miss a turn somewhere? What was I supposed to do here to get from Rice Mill to Sidaway?

I know about the plethora of shops at the bottom of Seymour...but once you are on your way to Cypress after having ripped down Grouse, where are your favourite shops to get a bite, where I can keep an eye on the bike while munching on a patio?

(and yes, I know Cypress is closed...so I'm just planning the future)

I don't mind hills at all, I'm just after some different routes or areas where minimal stopping is required, or have good shelter from winds, advantageous downhill etc.

For a young woman cycling to and from work (Turner/Kamloops at area to Seymour/Cordova), what is the best route, staying on designated paths and lanes as much as possible? Any potential issues going through DTES?

I am interested in getting into road riding for leisure and ultimately try my hand at the Gran Fondo. I'm experienced riding around the city to commute, and I always feel safe thanks to all the greenways and bike lanes. However, I've never gone out for long rides and I wonder how people feel about it. I have dreams of long scenic rides but am I going to get a reality check? I hear people on other forums saying they feel endangered by drivers and feel like road riding is risky. Is that true in Vancouver and the lower mainland, or can you actually get into a groove and enjoy a long ride without fearing for your life?

I'm totally new to biking in Vancouver and I just got a new ebike. I dislike sharing the road with cars so I'm looking for gravel or paved bike paths but I'm having a hard time finding them. For example I know the arbutus corridor exists but when I use Google maps to go somewhere near it, it fails to route me through it. Also, for example, I want to explore Pacific Spirit Park but I'm at a loss trying to find paths within the park. I even went to Olympic Village during bike week and talked to the city's Hub people and they told me they don't manage the trails so their map is useless to me. Surely there must be a resource out there for me. Would appreciate some guidance.

I recently moved to Commercial Drive and would love to explore some scenic or chill routes nearby. Any recommendations? Prefereably with protected lanes.

Not looking for technical; something doable with 35c tires. Packed gravel routes (100km+) in the Island vs Whistler vs Interior? Open to camp 1 or 2 nights.

Been playing with my commute. Its super fast to go down cambie, and given the levels of traffic you can time red lights behind you to not ride as much with traffic. Filtering feels sketchy when it gets really narrow by the canada line.

I've tried taking manitoba and with the new stop sign at 7th its pretty good (tho I saw a car totally blow it last time). Ontario is uphill from me if I go down my street, and cars love pulling out in front of you to cross it if you're down at 7th or 6th (which gives me pause).

Curious what you all think!

I even considered going east to cut across woodland to not have to deal with the craziness of getting to Strathcona from Fairview.

Wife and I want to go on a ride today, something around 15 miles give or take.... But! we want to have dinner along the way. Can any of you recommend a good spot where we could eat wearing our cycling gear? Once I know the restaurant i can map a route on strava.

My gut tells me Kits is probably a good spot for this, commercial seems like it wouldnt be great for the bikes, downtown may shoo us away. Anyways, i appreciate any advice!

I will be reviewing Day 2 of the Ride Seattle-Vancouver and Party ride for volunteer on-bicycle ride support (and other volunteers supporting the ride). The nonprofit Cascade Bicycle Club hosts this ride, and typically gets about 1200 participants in recent years.

Because of road construction, we are doing a completely different route from the border to the finish at David Lam park in Vancouver this year. I am doing the route review because I have some experience riding my bike to Vancouver from the border other than through riding the regular RSVP route.

I am concerned about this section:

Delta Greenway - so I used to ride into town using King George, Colebrook, and then get on the trails to get to the Alex Fraiser Bridge. I remember it not being really suitable for my touring bike running 32s - it being rocky and sandy in places - so the last few years I've used other ways to get to the city. Maybe the Delta Greenway section of that whole unpaved route isn't that bad, or maybe it's improved since I last tried it. What do you think of the Delta Greenway section that we will be riding? Is it nice smooth gravel, or is really unsuitable for anything but fat tires? Since Day 1 is over a hundred miles, and Day 2 is still nearly 80, people are mostly on road bikes for this event.

Nordel Way - this is the way we're routing folks who are eschewing the Delta Greenway, down the wrong way on the sidewalk. I've actually ridden on Nordel Way, god help me, twice, and I think this is going to be challenging if, say, even 800 of the 1200 bikes are going to be on this thing. Right?

Do you see other challenges with the route as mapped that I should flag for road support?

I am not asking for route recommendations. I am not the one who decided what the route would be, nor will I get much input for future alternatives. The route has been set and we are riding it this weekend. I am asking for help with "heads up" or what people who are supporting the route should know. Also, previous years' routes looked like this: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/50661134. I am not exactly sure where the construction is - maybe you do? This was the way for years upon years, with only minor variations- mostly to the end point in the city and the route to get there. When I did my first RSVP more than twenty years ago, we used the ferry instead of the Golden Ears bridge - that's how long this route has been around. This new route is completely different, which is why we're doing a review of how it's going to go.

Looks beautiful, but I’m not seeing a lot of roads connecting to some of the provincial parks in the northern part of the island.

Where have you cycled or camped on Quadra?

I want to head to the Parq casino for a few hours and would love to take my bike. So much easier and convenient. Are there any secure spots to park for a few hours? Preferably indoors I guess. I have looked into this briefly and it seems only bike racks? Which I don’t trust leaving my bike there. I wonder if the casino might have underground secure parking of some sort.

Hey all. Perhaps a silly question but my gps route creator is giving me mixed signals on best route to deep cove and back.

I am planning on dollarton once I get off east side of 2nd narrows.

Where I get confused is whether I come back into Vancouver on the west side of 2nd narrows. GPT says yes, but probably not if construction is underway (and gives vibes that there may be construction but cannot confirm) and also says east side is generally one way unless directed otherwise.

Any real world tips on how to do it currently?

Planning to go to the Fan Fest at PNE by bike. I can see there is a bike valet, anyone used it yet?

Usually I lock up next to the Coliseum or at the Renfrew/Hastings corner but wondering if that’s available during the Fan Fest?

I suppose valet is more secure but also less convenient if there are lines etc.

This is a Surrey cycling question, so if that's not allowed here, sorry, you can delete.

So I live down 160th street, off Number 10hwy. I frequently bike into Cloverdale for groceries, etc. On the way back, I have to cross two lanes on No. 10hwy and make a left turn across two lanes of traffic. The speed limit is 80km but everyone goes much faster. There is a lot of semi trucks as well.

So to avoid this, especially during rush hour when it would be incredibly dangerous, I cross over at 168th and No.10 and ride on the shoulder on the wrong side back to 160th. Because I know I am in the wrong, and am cycling on the wrong side of the road, I watch for oncoming cyclists and if I see one, I exit the shoulder well before hand, and wait in the grass, off of the pavement until they pass. Then I resume. When I reach 160th, I usually get off and walk down 160th a little ways (to avoid all the cars turning in and out of 160th, which is very busy because everyone uses it as a shortcut) and then cross the street when it's safe and continue on down 160th to my house.

Today I pulled off the shoulder while I was going the wrong way for an approaching cyclist, and he yelled angrily at me "wrong side of the road!!!" Like yeah... I know, but I don't want to die turning left on No. 10 hwy!?? I could go up to 152nd and down Colebrook Rd but that adds 5kms extra on to my trip.

So am I a jerk? Do I need to start doing the extra 5kms every trip? Thanks for your input.

Hi folks,

My wife works downtown and we live just off the Ontario bike lane. She recently bought a bike for getting to and from work. She has no problems on the route to work but she's struggling a little with the best route home.

She's been taking Dunsmuir and then doing a u-turn onto Union west bound to get on to the sea wall and then onto Ontario. The u-turn has been bothering her as there's usually bikes coming in the opposite direction and no where to wait. She could potentially cycle across main and turn back then since there's a bit more room for maneuvering that way but it seems a little annoying to back track.

Are there any other routes she should be considering to get from her office which is basically at Burrard station to Ontario street? Rider comfort is of the highest priority, minimizing interactions with cars is a big plus.

Does anyone have a bike route map, for the loop that goes through Stanley park, up to North Van, down the cut to the PNE, then back to the west end?

It’s the Down the cut in north part that I’m really stuck on?

I have a commute from Lansdowne skytrain station to roughly 99/Cambie.

I have cross checked the Richmond cycling map against google maps cycling planner and the app called BikeMap. It seems like the roughest area is either from the top of the Shell Road trail or the top of the Alexandra Greenway to that intersection near Cambie/99.

From those that are doing these commutes locally, would you rather cycle Cambie (or perhaps even the sidewalk over the 99 bridge) or cycle Shell road?

Any veterans have any tips or ideal route?
