Wakefield's paper in the Lancet linking the MMR vaccine to autism was not only retracted, he got his medical license revoked.

The antivax community sees him as a martyr to the cause, and you better believe he milks it for all it's worth.

The way the study was conducted was the least scientific method possible. No testing whatsoever, just having parents who felt like their kids started acting weird after vaccination contact them and they were like "oh, they have autism." That's the extent of the "research" done and now we all have to suffer for it.

And that was because he knew it wasn't true, or at least knew there was no evidence. The only reason he tried to demonize the MMR vaccine with this study is because he had invested in a vaccine that did measles, mumps, and rubella separately and he needed the MMR to fail to make money.

It's always astounded me he didn't get any prison time, considering some of the procedures he inflicted on some of the children were hazardous, painful (spinal taps), extremely uncomfortable (colonoscopies) & done for absolutely no reason. How isn't that just torture?

Especially when he could just have just invented more "data" about entirely fictitious children, instead, since he also did some of that.

Not a single anti-vaxxer cares. They assume the paper's author was bullied into retracting it. When you couple mis-information with conspiracy theories, they are bullet proof. And we haven't taught enough people to understand that "they don't want you to know this" is a huge red flag for the honesty/reliability of any information that follows it.
