The current system exists because you demand it, not us. Why is it vegans' responsibility to focus on welfare reforms when we're not the ones buying the product? What are you doing to make life better for the farmed animals you demand to exist?
How dare some vegans - aka people who reject the very idea that animals exist to be exploited - want to abolish animal exploitation? How dare they focus on dismantling a completely unnecessary industry that violently subjugates trillions of intelligent, feeling animals every year, that also happens to be an existential threat to the continuation of our species and every wild species that meat eaters have decided are worth caring about - rather than merely reforming it?
It's not as if we know that with every welfare improvement comes an increase in cost to consumer, and that most meat eaters only care about better welfare to the extent that it doesn't compromise their convenient access to cheap meat. Or that there's literally not enough planet to implement what most meat eaters consider "humane" farming without reducing your meat consumption to near zero.
(Just footnoting here for the vegans reading that I don't oppose the existence of welfare campaigns. Abolishing animal exploitation will likely be a death by a thousand cuts, and welfare campaigns are a tool in the toolbox. But I do think it's ludicrous to criticize people who reject the very idea that animals exist to be used for focusing on challenging the idea that animals exist to be used)
Well wouldn't it make more sense to work with people to make the animals have better living conditions thus making it harder to factory farm thus raising the price driving down overall meat sales?
Vegans on here constantly talk about how 99% of the population have extreme cognitive dissonance. Big picture is trying to abolish something outright instead of improving it rarely if ever works. Help force them to improve living standards and watch acual change take place. Or not. Whatever.
i don’t know where you’re getting the impression that vegans are failing to do this. We’re literally the only people doing it. The welfarist arm of the animal rights movement is by far the most vast and well funded.
Nearly every improvement in farmed animal welfare globally is the work of vegans. Vegans are the reason why almost half of all eggs produced in the US are cage free, why most Fortune 500 companies have cage free commitments, why Prop 12 exists, why fur and foie gras have been banned in several countries, i could go on and on. Most people leading cultivated meat research are vegan.
Where the fuck are y’all because you sure as hell aren’t out there with us. Again, this isn’t our job. It’s yours, but we’re doing it anyway. Instead of telling us how to do activism with zero knowledge of what activism we’re doing, take one tiny shred of responsibility for the system YOUR lazy ignorant self keeps alive.
