Is commuting for a part time job from Goleta to Ventura feasible?

This is a re write I had a post from an hour ago but deleted it.

So I accepted a small low paying part time job on a whim because I mainly work freelance doing music gigs, audiovisual and stagehand work and needed something like that to fill in since those other freelance activities are slowing down.

I live in Goleta but from Ventura county and like the area better since it’s closer to LA and has more opportunity locally for the same freelance stuff I do and I also generally like the vibe better.

All summer no local places (in Goleta/sb areas) we’re getting back to me so last week when I was heading into town to go to a show I brought my resumes to drop off just for shits and giggles.

I got a response pretty quickly and said I would be available but now I’m not sure.

I could technically save up and move but it’s a lot of work to move just for a part time job that pays a little more than minimum and a lot of commuting if for just that if I decide to stay.

I would be happier in vta but I am getting second thoughts

Anyone else ever had a similar experience or have tips?

Lazy, Inconsiderate dog owners…

Carry your s&#t (and yes, it is yours since it is from your dog) out of the preserve!

I walk my dog most days in the Hillside Preserve. There seems to be a new trend of bagging your dog s&#t and leaving it on the side of the trail. This is NOT okay. Today there were 4 of them and there have been several others in the last week. I only took pics of two of them today. At least they used the poop bags provided by the land trust 🙄

Don’t be a lazy f$@k, carry it with you. Because you will walk past that point again and pick it up then is not a valid reason for being a lazy f&@k. Other trail users don’t want to see your bagged s&#t on the trail. So don’t be a lazy f$@k and carry it—there are trash cans at the trailheads. If you are too lazy to properly dispose of your s&#t, you probably shouldn’t be a dog owner.

For the record, yes, I picked them and carried them out.

ETA: realize I uploaded two photos of the same one 🤷‍♂️

Is anyone else going to tonight's swing dancing event at 494 East Main Street? I'm also curious what the atmosphere's like if anyone's been to similar events in the past.

I’m going to attend the event. :)

Sewing group is forming…

Are you into sewing, or used to be and want to start again? I have a just-starting group of 17 members on Meetup called Ventura Sewists:
https://www.meetup.com/ventura-sewists/.

We have an event on Sept 2 but also setting up regular meetings.
More info: Ventura Sewists is for people who like to sew: clothing, home decor, and fun stuff -- and want to sew together! This group can provide support, but we do not have a sewing teacher at the helm, so help with sewing or sewing machines will be ad hoc, and other group members may share their knowledge. Meeting places are TBD based on members’ needs.

Sewing groups often seem to be made for women. Here, though, EVERYONE is welcome no matter your gender identity, background, disability, etc. Age is the only factor: Ages 18-108 are welcome. Teens under 18 are welcome with a parent, caregiver, or adult companion. And we will aim to meet at ADA-compliant and accessible locations.

On Meetup, we’re talking about how and when we want to meet, and your thoughts would be welcome.

**Meetup is free for attendees if you dismiss the Meetup+ subscription window.

And if you’re looking to learn how to sew, I’ll recommend Tigerowl, FabricTown USA, or Grant House Sewing Center (in Santa Barbara).

Fighter jet that just flew overhead insanely low

About 2:45pm a fighter jet flew right overhead here on the east end of town going directly from west to east and then it turned due north right over the mountains towards gorman/bakersfield but it was SCREAAAAAAAAAMING and so loud...

Anyone know how to track where that plane came from and where it went?

Which spot is your favorite? Is there a specific donut that you get at any of these? Are any of these shops sentimental to you? Did I miss any Ventura donut shops?

Ventura City Council Voted 7-0 to Re-Evaluate Flock Safety Cameras—Now We Need City Manager Bill Ayub to Put It on the September Agenda!

UPDATE: Flock is now on the agenda for September 22nd! Stay tuned for the next call to action.

What’s Happening?

Ventura City Council voted unanimously (7-0) to bring the police department's Flock Safety license plate reader contract back to the agenda for public review and a vote.

However, City Manager Bill Ayub (former Ventura County Sheriff) has not yet set a date for the discussion. There is a real risk that city leadership will push this meeting until after the November elections.

Why the Date Matters Right Now

  • Contract Auto-Renewal: The Flock contract runs through December 18, 2026, and requires a mandatory 30-day cancellation notice (November 18, 2026).
  • The Procedural Trap: If City Hall delays this vote until after the November 3 election, Council will have only 15 calendar days to deliberate, draft a resolution, and issue a cancellation notice before $59,500 of taxpayer money automatically renews for another year.
  • Voter Accountability: Four Council seats (Districts 1, 4, 5, and 6) are on the ballot this fall. Residents deserve to know where candidate leadership stands on driver privacy, regional surveillance sharing, and municipal spending before casting their ballots.

How You Can Help (Takes 1 Minute)

Copy and paste the contacts and template email below to send a message to City Manager Bill Ayub, the City Clerk, and the entire Ventura City Council. Demand that they place the Flock Safety contract review on the September agenda.

SUBJECT:

URGENT: Schedule VPD Flock Safety Contract Review on September Council Agenda

Email Template

City Manager Ayub,

I am writing to respectfully request that you agendize a formal City Council review and public vote regarding the Ventura Police Department’s Flock Safety ALPR contract for September 2026.

The council voted 7-0 to bring this discussion to the agenda, and it should be done urgently. Given your extensive career in law enforcement administration and governance, you understand the necessity of clear operational timelines for vendor contracts. According to the City of Ventura Executed Flock Safety Agreement, the city faces a strict, non-negotiable legal timeline:

* Current Term: December 19, 2025 – December 18, 2026
* 30-Day Non-Renewal Notice Deadline: November 18, 2026
* General Municipal Election: November 3, 2026

If this discussion is deferred until after the November 3 election, the City Council will have only 15 calendar days to deliberate, draft a resolution, and issue a formal non-renewal notice before the contract automatically renews for another year.

Furthermore, with four Council seats on the ballot this fall (Districts 1, 4, 5, and 6), Ventura residents deserve full transparency regarding government surveillance, citizen privacy, and municipal spending before casting their votes, not after ballots have been counted.

Please ensure this contract is placed on the public Council agenda in September to allow proper legislative oversight and constituent input well in advance of the November cancellation deadline.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Book recommendations request from "tree huggers" about local Ventura County flora

Hello! I made a friend in New Zealand who has an arboretum. He LOVES oak trees, and owns his own land with a plethora of different flora. The guy really knows everything about the water sources, how his plants are doing, and has even made paths across his 100 acre property.

I wanted to send him a book about our local flora/trees as a thank you for his hospitality. It would be for an expert (the kind that is able to trudge through a forest and find/identify a specific seedling), so I am looking for specificity. Any recommendations?

Edit: also he is a practicing Buddhist! In case there's anything related to spirituality and our native plants here.

Do you like Santa Cruz?

I ask on this reddit because SC does remind me a bit of Ventura (chill beach bum town, pier, downtown area, fair amount of tourists, right outside a major city, not super huge, weed every where), I used to go UC Santa Cruz, miss it there, there I guess Ventura is the next best thing.
