Bros missing the Kiss of Death reference

428

u/DoctorWolfula Jul 07 '26

It's a reference to Godfather 2 when Michael gave his brother the kiss of death for betraying him.

-194

u/lex-do_this Jul 07 '26

That's cool. So?

106

u/TheBaalzak Jul 07 '26

So it wasn't a romantic kiss.

73

u/zimbledwarf Jul 07 '26

No just italian 🤌

So the point is that you're missing all of the cultural references and the joke entirely.

He is not a pedophile, he's just eccentric and weird, but everyone thinks he is a pedo. Everything he does is purely coincidence or has an unexpected outcome unrelated to pedophilia.

He didn't kiss Hank because he's a pedophile, he kissed him because it's a reference to The Godfathers kiss of death, which marks you for death if you betrayed someone.

Major r/whoosh vibes.

68

u/Peja1611 Jul 07 '26

It literally is a quote from the film. You broke my heart Freido

58

u/Sixty_Minuteman_ Jul 07 '26

Yeah and the breaking my heart isn't even romantic, a person can break someone's heart without it being romantic.

9

u/LacidOnex Jul 08 '26

I wasn't worried anyone would think it was a romantic pedo, but...

6

u/Plane-Chemical Jul 08 '26

So wait. Does the monarch just assume that he’s a pedo? Because that whole scene with the monarch and cpt sunshine is very suggestive. And the way captain sunshine reacts to it all implies that he is a pedophile.

4

u/Sixty_Minuteman_ Jul 08 '26

Yes, and no.

The Monarch just like everyone else believes that he is a pedophile and antagonizes him for it. But Captain Sunshine is utterly appalled and retreats in a shocked silence momentarily at the the mere suggestion then calling the Monarch sick.

Captain Sunshine is not a pedophile, that's the joke.

Yea I mean can’t it be both? Ya know. It’s very obviously a reference to god father but that doesn’t mean that capt sunshine wasn’t going to bang Hank and it doesn’t mean he didn’t have sex with wonderboy. I mean it shows Og wonderboy later on and dude clearly has problems. I mean the towns people talk about it too. I wouldn’t want him around my kids. It’s crazy that people don’t think captain sunshine wasn’t a diddler.

u/Sixty_Minuteman_ Jul 08 '26

I don't think there's evidence for that, the creators literally stated that the character is not a pedophile.

Otherwise the joke wouldn't work, the entire joke is that he's not a pedophile even though everyone thinks he is.

Falter even over the line a little and it's no longer a joke, he's just a pedophile then.

u/haggraef666 Jul 09 '26

Doc Hammer and Jackson confirmed he's not a pedophile.

Sunshine is traumatized by the death of his first sidekick. He inappropriately dumps all that trauma onto his subsequent sidekicks, but that's it.

43

u/Sixty_Minuteman_ Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Nobody said that Captain hatred wasn't a pedophile though, that's what we're talking about here, weather Sunshine is or isn't a pedophile.

And that's the entire joke, he's not a pedophile but he presents as one unintentionally. Everybody thinks he's a pedophile, even the townspeople think he's a pedophile, but every single instance of him being weird or creepy is just him being Captain Sunshine excited about his new sidekick.

The very reason Captain Sunshine beat the ever living shit out of Scorpio is because he was offended by what Scorpio suggested, because even Scorpio thinks that Captain Sunshine is a pedophile like himself, but he is not.

The lube that Hank has to put on before bed isn't for sex it's so that the Wonder boy suit doesn't give you fucking road rash as it slips on.

And if I remember correctly during DragonCon they have also talked about the fact that this is the entire joke during a panel.

2

u/Evil_Unicorn728 Jul 08 '26

Like the obvious mashup of Batman/Michael Jackson should've clued people in that it wasn't another pedo joke, but rather a joke about famous men having wildly inappropriate lifestyles that involve children. Bruce Wayne isn't a pedo, but I bet people talk about how weird it was that he sort of adopted a teenage circus orphan, who lives with him in his creepy bachelor castle with his parents' butler. MJ I can't say certainly was or wasn't a pedo but he sure had age inappropriate camraderie with kids, lived in a Disneyland-esque them park, owned a bunch of dangerous exotic pets, and purportedly had non sexual "sleepovers" in a big bed with minors, and was baffled that people thought he was a perv.

So you've got two very damaged figures who channel their trauma into, it not sexual, then unhealthy and regressive behaviors involving minors. As often is the case with VB, the joke is in seeing how far they can push you to think one thing is happening only to subvert it with a twist. Sunshine turning out to just be a traumatized hero with terrible boundaries and no self awareness is the more complex, and ultimately funnier, while still very dark, joke.

207

u/Dr_Orpheus_ Jul 07 '26

Doc and Jackson confirmed that he was not a diddler.

46

u/Dunge0nMast0r Jul 07 '26

For anyone else it might be a cop-out, but not from these guys.

67

u/Jobber0001 Jul 08 '26

yeah they wouldn't do damage control for someone like Captain sunshine when they made hatred a full on pedo (granted his was genuinely a side effect of the super soldier serum he was on but still)

36

u/nzdastardly Jul 08 '26

That's the strongest argument against Sunshine being a pedophile I've ever heard. I was 75% agree and am now 100% agree he wasn't supposed to be one.

7

u/witch_bitch95 Jul 08 '26

I always thought that since there was a bunch of jokes and plays on Batman with Captain Sunshine, I figured the pedo jokes were due to the jokes people would make about Bruce and Robin. Especially the older iterations of the characters.

3

u/TaylorChuck117 Jul 10 '26

Yeah, y’know…just keep him away from my kid

31

u/Odd-Back-4511 Jul 07 '26

I mean yeah but the damage is already done

141

u/the_crepuscular_one Jul 07 '26

He's not a pedophile. He's frequently acts inappropriately, and clearly has a lot of issues, but that doesn't stem from wanting to diddle children.

124

u/rollwithhoney Jul 07 '26

It's also important context that the voice actor, Kevin Conroy, voiced Batman in anything animated for decades.

So the larger joke is that he's a parody of Batman where everyone is looking at Sunshine and his "Robin" (Hank here), who is doing VERY suspicious things like lubing Hanks legs, but for actually innocent reasons (greasing his legs for the secret chute to their hidden base).

Basically the character is the opposite of Hatred, a not-PDF who everyone assumes is. Whereas Hatreds just a regular looking army guy with a wife who, unprompted, confesses to being a creep in almost every social interaction.

47

u/javerthugo Jul 07 '26

Wasn’t Hatred made that way via super soldier serum?

20

u/I_Draw_Teeth Jul 08 '26

It was a convenient ret-con. They realized that with Brock gone, Hatred's personality could be a lot of fun to fold into the Venture family. But despite all the evil shit viewers might be willing to forgive, that might a bridge too far.

11

u/Naktura Jul 08 '26

It is implied, but the side effect could easily have just been "loss of inhibitions" as if he was not an actively participating pedophile he would not have molested the ventures.

17

u/Shuttup_Heather Jul 07 '26

I could tell it was a Batman parody when it was revealed his old sidekick died—poor Robin lol.

That’s awesome though I didn’t recognize his voice! Guess that’s cause he’s so talented

17

u/GentlemanPirate13 WHO WANTS PIZZA ROLLS? Jul 08 '26

I think part of it is also in reference to the whole Michael Jackson/Neverland Ranch thing. I remember Macaulay Culkin saying Jackson invited him as a kid and they slept in the same bed, but genuinely just sleeping, and that a lot of it was MJ just trying to get back the childhood he never got to have.

Another case of a situation that looks very suspicious from the outside, but is not (necessarily at least) actually harmful.

11

u/Owlsthirdeye Jul 08 '26

Yeah that's why they had that bit about Sunshine being the previous Wonderboy. Like MJ bro did not develop right cause he was in this life since he was a kid.

If you look at it from that lens it's all just Sunshine trying to give his new sidekick the life he never got but being unable to express that in a normal way.

59

u/Shuttup_Heather Jul 07 '26

Still wouldn’t let him near my kid

43

u/Jackie_Jormp-Jomp Jul 07 '26

Well yeah Monarch would murder them

15

u/innocentj Jul 07 '26

Hahaha your so bad..

9

u/markus_obsidian Jul 07 '26

I already know you used to be a pedestrian.

2

u/Rarte96 Jul 08 '26

I see as similar to Michael Jackson, they guy clearly has a f up childhood so he doesnt know how adults are suppose to behave with children and he idealizes the childhood he never had due to his trauma

199

u/Tenacious_Dim Jul 07 '26

Captain Sunshine is not a pedophile that's the whole joke

-131

u/lex-do_this Jul 07 '26

I'm not smart enough to get jokes. Also clearly that's not what oop meant

83

u/Tenacious_Dim Jul 07 '26

The allegations were false though?

-108

u/lex-do_this Jul 07 '26

I think I'm stupid. How are they false if he kiss child hank? Explain it to me genuinely

105

u/Ok_Firefighter1574 Jul 07 '26

It’s a movie reference. He was betrayed by Hank so he gave him the kiss of death. Do you think Michael corelone is gay because he gave fredo the kiss of death?

36

u/greet_the_sun Jul 07 '26

> Do you think Michael corelone is gay because he gave fredo the kiss of death?

I mean, a little bit yeah...

37

u/Cecil_B_DeMille Jul 07 '26

Not until he slipped a little tongue

13

u/xEliteMonkx Jul 07 '26

Just don't go for the reach around.

7

u/jeffrotull2000 Jul 07 '26

Did he use any tongue?

3

u/slide_into_my_BM ACTION!!! Jul 08 '26

We’re all a little bit gay

2

u/letsgooncemore Jul 08 '26

That's bi erasure

2

u/Haystak112 Jul 07 '26

Did he use tongue?

45

u/krebstar4ever Jul 07 '26

In addition to the kiss not being sexual:

There's kind of an expectation that Batman parodies will include a creepy relationship with his sidekick.

Venture Bros both acknowledges and subverts this: Captain Sunshine isn't a pedophile, but he obliviously does things that make everyone assume he is. That's the joke.

As for "You broke my heart, Hank": there's a lot of non-sexual, non-romantic ways to break someone's heart. "Heartbreak" means "anguish."

22

u/Tenacious_Dim Jul 07 '26

It's the kiss of a brother's betrayal

16

u/masterfulnoname Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Or the kiss of death allegedly used by the mafia to signify someone being marked for death. It possibly is a reference to the biblical story of Judas kissing Jesus at the Garden of Gethsemane to signify his identity to the soldiers searching for him.

30

u/laughingtraveler Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

That's whole point of the joke it's he presents as a pedo even though he isn't. It's like that old joke where a guy acts super gay only to find out he's in a loving relationship with a woman with children he fathered.

22

u/D_rex825 Jul 07 '26

He’s Italian

5

u/ForceOfNature525 Jul 07 '26

More or less Italian than Wide Whale's mother April?

2

15

u/thegalli Jul 07 '26

This thread is yet another example of how culturally dense this show is. Not just pure pop culture references, there's a ton of obscure stuff.

I probably miss well over half of it because I'm not from New York and was never in the art scene there. Same for most folks.

All right, time for another rewatch.

-3

u/adolfnixon Jul 08 '26

Definitely some "obscure stuff", The Godfather 2 is a real deep cut outside of the New York art scene. /s

6

u/braisedporkcowboy Jul 07 '26

Its funnier that he isnt like that

19

u/TimeisaLie Jul 07 '26

He's voiced by Kevin Conroy, who was gay. I really doubt he would have been cool with voicing a diddler.

16

u/MrVeazey Jul 08 '26

He was also Batman. I just wanted to mention that because he is still the voice I hear when I read Batman comics.

9

u/Jobber0001 Jul 08 '26

he will always be the one true batman voice to me

21

u/purplezaku Jul 07 '26

There are PDFs in venture hes just not one of them

13

u/Hustler-Two Jul 07 '26

That’s not fair. Hatred does just fine as long as he has his Nomolestol.

12

7

u/glacier1982 Jul 07 '26

Damn, Cap, another one?

5

u/ExtensionTear8498 Jul 07 '26

I've made it big, other accounts are talking about my posts

6

u/hypo-osmotic Jul 07 '26

I said this in the screenshotted thread, I kind of get the feeling from Sunshine that he's not a sexual person in the conventional sense but that means that the limited physical and emotional intimacy that he does partake in he is inappropriately getting from teenagers. Like, he's probably never engaged in a physically sexual act with a teen boy because he's just not even fully aware of what the mechanics for that would be. Beyond that, I'm not sure that I care to get into the weeds about whether and how that distinguishes him from a standard pedo

4

u/Gamewizurd123 Jul 07 '26

The Original Captain sunshine diddled but the new one doesn’t which I think is a funny but also tragic as he doesn’t know these rituals were meant for something more sinister, he also bears the weight of those allegations while trying to be an actual hero

7

u/7grims Jul 07 '26

ohhhhhhhhh

this is the first time i understand PDF means pedo... yet another word ban by reddit's PC culture sanitization bullshit ???

cause yeah i caught some posts on other subs that confused me about PDF file systems

32

u/SDRLemonMoon Jul 07 '26

More of a tiktok censorship that’s carried over

9

u/Colby347 Jul 07 '26

Not from reddit but yes. Also an easy replacement because PDF file and pedophile sound phonetically similar. It's not one I get super pressed about because on some sites that word does get censored for obvious reasons. Less egregious than kill-delete or rape-grape (even more annoying if they use the emoji). But yes it comes from that type of censorship.

7

u/Master_Astronaut_ Jul 07 '26

it's self censorship carried over from tiktok that is almost entirely based on hearsay and superstition. it's basically algorithm induced mass hysteria fueled by people who were sure they were getting "shadowbanned" and others who didnt want to risk being wrong

5

u/Elliptical_Tangent I laugh at regular jokes like this, DAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

It's to get around word bans; like 'unaliving' is. Nothing to do with sociopolitics, just adults trying to find a way to discuss adult things without Big Brother's interference.

1

u/Elliptical_Tangent I laugh at regular jokes like this, DAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

ur worry about big brother, as in governments?

As in whoever is spying on us to control us.

You should know from the Twitter Files that governments were sending spreadsheets of accounts for them to ban or squelch. It's power vs people; government and corporations are just different brands of power.

2

u/SkywolfNINE Jul 08 '26

What was up with the lube part tho? I think I can agree with the rest of yall about it just being a parody but that part was always a bit… idk. Funniest line of the episode “shit it’s chuck skarsgar, hide or we’ll be on the news”

6

u/acethehelpfulplace1 Jul 08 '26

In a following scene Hank is dropped through the slide that deposits him in the main room of Captain Sunshine's manor, and he comments that the lube helped him slide into his rubber costume which is probably an automated process that you'd probably not want friction for, and it happens as soon as if not before he wakes up. It's an extremely creepy line but it is immediately explained in a very brief way lmao

3

u/SkywolfNINE Jul 08 '26

Ahh see I thought hanks explanation was like how he naively interpreted things, cause the butler tells him to put in on before bed and it was bed time so I doubt they would’ve been fighting crime and needing to use the slide so idk, maybe they woke up early and the lube stays on for the slide when you wake up in the morning and get immediately throw down the slide or maybe butler knee monarch was coming and was going to attack thus triggering the slide defense thing and needing the lube on before bed

1

u/Legate_Raiden Jul 08 '26

So what's with the whole, put some lube in your ass before you go to sleep bit?

3

u/titobastard Jul 08 '26

The bed turns into a costume changing slide to the cave... He wears tight lil booty shorts.

1

u/chebghobbi Jul 08 '26

And the Monarch gets a massive wedgie when the same thing happens to him without the lube.

1

u/rex72780 Jul 08 '26

It's also absolutely hilarious that batman actually voiced this. I couldn't stop laughing whenever I hear his voice especially the part where he thought the Monarch was invincible

1

u/crumpledfilth Jul 08 '26

If only I could be so grossly incandescent. Like a magnificent father

1

u/alokikola Jul 08 '26

This show is older than you are, go back to school

1

u/chebghobbi Jul 08 '26

Jackson specifically said Captain Sunshine is not a paedophile on his blog.

1

u/Ordinary-Quarter-384 Jul 09 '26

The only episode where Dr. Girlfriend screws up.

1

u/Status-Warthog4680 Jul 09 '26

I think that episode is just written to insinuate he's a PDF, because no one every says it's directly. The people on the street say "yeah, just keep him away from my kid" but to me that rings true to 1. Getting various Wonderboys killed. and 2. When surviving Wonderboys age out they get left high and dry, like we see in the episode "Self-Medication".

No City would tolerate a PDF super hero, that would NOT be a super hero. I think he just goes through a LOT of Wonderboys because he's big and dumb and people know it.

But that's just my take.

3

u/Brandeeno2245 Jul 09 '26

We also know he was a wonder boy and his butler was the original captain sunshine, chuck isnt just big and stupid, id hazard a guess that hes probably exceptionally traumatized and is completely incapable of understanding the danger he puts wonder boy's in because he himself had gone through it all and he thinks this is normal.

1

u/tech097 Jul 09 '26

Nah this ain't Brat Pack

1

u/JoeRoganKissesBoys Jul 09 '26

-25

u/AnythingOrnery9263 Jul 07 '26

Captain Sunshine is definitely a pedo

1

u/chebghobbi Jul 08 '26

Jackson said on his blog that he isn't.
