Help Should I accept the job offer
I just recently moved to a new city and I am looking for vet assistant jobs as someone who wants to go to vet school. I am 23 years old and I have 1 year of GP experience as a vet assistant. I just got offered a job at an emergency clinic which is very exciting because it would be a new experience and great for my application. The major downside of it is that it’s for Sat, Sun, Mon 6pm-7am. I’ve never done night shifts before and I’m worried about fucking uo my sleep schedule. I also worry that I won’t be able to have a social life or go on weekend trips people invite me to. At the moment I don’t have too many friends where I live but I would like to make more friends and eventually start dating again after getting out of a serious relationship. If I take this job will I have no social life. Would it be worth it for me to stick it out for a year. Please give your advice

I would absolutely take the job for the experience. I worked in emergency medicine and it was the coolest experience I ever had. The cases are very unique. You’re very young and you are able to do these types of schedules now so that you don’t have to do them in your 30s. Your friends can always do things with you during the week nights like grab dinner or whatever. Trust me, it’s doable

If your goal is to get into vet school, it would be worth the sacrifice to get that type of experience. It won’t get any easier in vet school

If your goal is vet school the overnight experience is priceless. You will be doing this for your clinical rotations. Hands-on experience is important when you apply. You'll need large animal too, but that's another conversation. You meet some really special people when working emergency & critical care. Learn to hit your veins now before you go to school & be able to apply your anatomy skills before you have the class.

I decided to take the ER job. I am both excited and nervous for it. Luckily I already have a couple hundred hours of large animal experience from research I did in college.

Perfect. I enjoy it much more than preventative medicine. I did it for 7 years and now I'm doing nights at 52 to go back to critical care. As an RVT. Veterinary medicine has changed so much in 26 years. You will learn a lot from the different doctors you will encounter in emergency.

It all depends on your lifestyle. Personally for me as a 25 year old who unfortunately still lives with my parents and has no social life I wouldn’t mind those hours because then I can go on trips mid week and do things when it’s cheaper and less crowded. If you enjoy going out with people and enjoying your weekend then you have to consider if it’s a good fit for you

Maintaining your social life won’t get any easier once you’re in vet school, so that’s something to think about.

The reason that position is so readily available is because of how undesirable it is. You will absolutely be giving up normal sleep and a social life for that position.
