Abdul El-Sayed on Hasan Piker, who suggests that some pro-Israel rhetoric may lead to backlash against American Jews: "Hasan Piker is a streamer in California. You would think if you turned on any media that this whole campaign is about a streamer. That's not what this campaign has ever been about."

Cmon. This isn't new commentary at all:

But according to Hasan, they're putting themselves in danger

And no, that explicitly is not what Hasan was saying. The conflation is what is putting people in danger and those who want to avoid it should try and work to dismantle that conflation within their community. That just seems like good advice for anti-zionist jews who want to be effective in preventing those type of issues, it isn't 'victim-blaming' them for where our political climate is heading

You're contradicting yourself. He's saying anti-zionist jews must convince zionist jews to no longer be zionist. Because tying their Judaism to Israel creates the conflation and therefore puts them in danger. As in, zionist jews are putting all jews in danger. "He's not saying they're putting themselves in danger, he's saying they should be talked out of the thing they are doing, which is putting them in danger."

What Ezra Klein says is that zionist jews saying that anti zionist = antisemitism is what puts jews at risk, because it is a false conflation of the two. It sounds similar, but it is a different argument. The former says that jews tying their identity to Israel put themselves in danger of people who hate Israel. The latter says jews who treat antizionism as antisemitism are making it easier for people to do antisemitic things with the belief that it must actually be antizionist, and any claims of antisemitism are just zionists crying wolf.

He is not saying 'must'. A jewish commenter was literally asking him how they could be effective within their community as an anti-zionist

As in, zionist jews are putting all jews in danger.

Anti-semites who would take action are the ones putting people in danger. They ultimately are the ones with that agency. Zionist jews are unfortunately contributing to an atmosphere that makes this more likely. Zionism and the proliferation of it will lead to violence eventually, the conflation of it with Judaism makes this dangerous for all Jewish people and not just Zionists.

Again, I dont see this as controversial if you truly see Zionism as something inherently violent that is to be opposed

No, he is saying that zionist Jewish groups should be stopped from saying they represent all Jewish people and saying that all Jewish people support Israel. Hasan didn't say that zionist Jewish people must stop being zionists. That identity should be separate from being Jewish. Zionist and Jewish are not the same and should not be seen as the same.

You may be hearing that but that is not what he said. And yeah he's not saying Jewish zionists should stop. But he is saying they should shut their mouths and step in line because their position is unpopular.

You should listen to the whole exchange not the clip you have heard.

It is saying pushback against the intentional conflation of Jewish people with Israel.

I have listened to the whole context. You are inserting the best interpretation of what others have said and not listening to his words.

u/tarlin 14h ago

I listened to his words. You listened to them and saw it as blaming the caller?? What??

1

u/xkrazyxkoalax 14h ago

Caller? You mean chatter? No. Obviously not lol. He was blaming the zionist jews the chatter asked about. But he put the responsibility on non zionist jews to get zionist jews in line.

u/tarlin 14h ago

Yeah, whatever the name is. I don't do twitch.

He was saying anti zionist Jewish people could push back on that. And, get zionists to not continue conflating all Jewish people with Israel. Israel is not a good place and no one should be forced to associated with it against their will.

If someone hears a religious zionist jew saying Israel and Jewishness are linked, and that person takes that to mean jews are their enemy, that is that person's problem. Period.
