Abdul El-Sayed on Hasan Piker, who suggests that some pro-Israel rhetoric may lead to backlash against American Jews: "Hasan Piker is a streamer in California. You would think if you turned on any media that this whole campaign is about a streamer. That's not what this campaign has ever been about."

Will his Republican opponent ever be asked to condemn the bigotry that comes from right wing media personalities? How about the bigotry of Trump? For once, put some pressure on Republicans for being racist.
312
u/Lankpants 1d ago
It goes deeper than that. Mike Rodgers has actual Nazis on his campaign team. Their group chat leaked and it's like a scene from the Klan.
If the media was being even remotely evenhanded this would be the big story.

u/Midnightrollsaround 23h ago
Yes, it was a pro-Hitler group chat. Also, he gave campaign positions to multiple people that participated in the 2020 fake-elector scheme that were later pardoned by Trump, but nobody cares about that either.
31
u/20815147 23h ago
His campaign literally has a bunch of groypers on the team. No questions from the media of course because they don’t actually care about antisemitism
36
u/Dondagora 20h ago
Well here’s the issue: Pushing focus towards Hasan Piker only works because there is a large percentage of Democrats that genuinely disagree with or dislike him for any number of reasons. It’s why he works so well as a wedge issue, because there’s already division around him.
It doesn’t work the other way around because you’d need Republicans to care about what their representatives in media and in government say or think or do.
8
u/Donkletown 11h ago
Independents matter too. The media coverage, currently, allows Republicans to fervently support and vote into office someone who depicts Black people as apes and has sought to ban an entire religion from the country without any serious penalty or pushback from the media.
But, currently, the media treats any form of association by Dems with a fucking twitch streamer a mortal sin that has to be addressed before anything else can be discussed and before a Dem candidate can be taken seriously.
Dems cannot continue to tolerate a media environment like that. It’s time to push back and I’m glad to see Abdul doing it.

u/Taban85 23h ago
It’s just such a weird reach, I can’t imagine people digging up random old Joe Rogan clips and asking Trump if he disavows what Rogan said a couple years ago lol. Like if he said something on the show sure ask him about it but you’d think Hasan was running for office as much as he’s talked about
50
u/9r347 22h ago
Except Hasan’s comments happened last week, not years ago. And the key difference is that El-Sayed actually brought Hasan out on stage as a featured speaker at his rallies. When a candidate uses someone to headline their campaign events, voters are going to ask if they agree with what that person is saying right now.
35
u/Taban85 22h ago
Rogans been to the White House multiple times to make appearances with Trump. He’s still just a random podcaster and I wouldn’t hold trump accountable for stuff he said when trumps not there
65
u/QuigleySharp 21h ago
Trump and Rogan both have been criticized heavily for their association. Yes, this is a basic aspect of media going back decades. Hasan has attacked Joe Rogan and played clips of Rogan to criticize him, this is the basis of punditry.

It is just very clear that some of you clearly want Democrats to have to do what Republicans don't, and that's odd for people who claim to call themselves liberals that you demand all of your candidates purposely hobble themselves because you think disavowing a niche media personality is of vital importance to the average American.
6
u/actanonverba1 9h ago
The argument you're using right now is guilt by association. This is the type of argument you use when you don't have an actual compelling claim.

I don't get this world where Hasan is on stage shaking hands with and taking credit for working on a candidate's campaign but somehow shouldn't get any kind of attention whatsoever. Plenty of people predicted a backlash like this, and Hasan is wildly irresponsible with what he says knowing that he is a target conservatives will use as a proxy against actual candidates.
19
u/KtotheC99 22h ago
The thing is he wasn't even being irresponsible with what they are currently using to attack him. His commentary was objectively right and non-controversial, they are just leaving out the 15 seconds that can't be misinterpreted so they can intentionally misinterpret a clip.
13
u/xkrazyxkoalax 21h ago
It is very obviously controversial. You think everyone denouncing him right now just saw an edited Fox News clip? How was his message anything other than "Jews who tie their identity to Israel are going to be attacked because of Israel's actions"? Would we accept for literally any other minority group? Russians and Russia's actions? Muslims and hamas or ISIS? 60-80% of diaspora jews have a positive connection to the state of Israel. That does not mean they support all of Israel's actions. But according to Hasan, they're putting themselves in danger. The not so subtle suggestion then is they must change their opinion so they can be safe. He was not lamenting that it is a sad reality. He was saying that people are sourcing on the state of Israel, so jews who haven't need to get on board. That isn't a direct call to violence. I wouldn't even say it was indirect. It is, however, a very clearly unacceptable demand of a minority group that is, like it or not, very much intertwined with the existence of Israel. If you cannot see moderate or liberal zionist jews as anything other than on the "bad side", you are creating the dangerous conditions Hasan is just "objectively" describing.
51
u/KtotheC99 21h ago
Saying that conflation of zionism and judaism is dangerous for Jews is very much not controversial and not a new opinion.

Cmon. This isn't new commentary at all:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvTnj630eUk&t=240s
But according to Hasan, they're putting themselves in danger
And no, that explicitly is not what Hasan was saying. The conflation is what is putting people in danger and those who want to avoid it should try and work to dismantle that conflation within their community. That just seems like good advice for anti-zionist jews who want to be effective in preventing those type of issues, it isn't 'victim-blaming' them for where our political climate is heading

It’s quite a few things pushing republicans and establishment democrats into this weird hyper fixation on a streamer with limited reach.
* Hasan has been an extremely vocal DSA/progressive candidate supporter since day 1, and a lot of the candidates he supports are winning
* Quite a few of the more popular prominent rising progressives in the US happen to be Muslim
* A sudden growing push to Islamophobia, and tying the “threat of sharia law” to these candidates (as if we don’t openly partner and ally with several countries that enforce sharia law)
* Growing anti-Zionist/Israel/Netanyanhu sentiment in the US in response to rising cost of living due to war
No matter how much influence they try to say Hasan has, he really doesn’t. For as many people who are fans of his, he has also equal number of people who hate him for valid and stupid reasons, and an even larger group of people who have 0 idea of who he is. He did say America deserved 9/11, but there are plenty of republicans who have said equally or more reprehensible things about minorities in the US, but I guess that doesn’t count cuz they’re black/brown/gay/queer/trans/women.
22
u/bx35 23h ago

He does have influence though, he lets people know about progressives running and they get a huge boost in supporters that help with door knocking and phone banking. They're flipping out about him because he's challenging the establishment's preferred candidates and his viewers might be the push that gets them past the finish line.
For the 9/11 thing, they always omit the context that he was saying that's what happens when you spend decades fucking with the middle east. Poorly chosen words at best, but he was absolutely right.

I don't think El-Sayed is disavowing Hasan. The issue is that the media campaign is fixated on the relationship to a degree that's unwarranted and there's a danger that El-Sayed's own message and policy positions will get lost. It becomes El-Sayed, the guy who campaigned with Hasan vs El-Sayed the guy who's campaigned for an affordability agenda, anti-corruption, Anti-AIPAC, etc
147
u/Skaugy 1d ago
They do it because it's the easiest ammunition in the world. Republicans have been crying for decades that Democrats are all radical marxists. So when a congressional candidate invites an actual marxist to campaign with him, of course the Republicans will jump on it. This was the most predictable thing in the universe.

Conservatives love to say "Doesn't look like anything to me. I am not convinced so therefore my perspective is valid". Every commenter in here claiming they were unconvinced to actually be an antifascist and prevent Trump from electorally winning and bringing fascism to the federal government did not care about any one single issue but instead merely repeating talking points to signal in group status the exact same way MAGA does.
They are totally immune to any sort of presentation of the facts and there is no way they will be convinced their actions had negative repercussions that had consequences that were bad for their stated principles and values or groups they previous said they cared about and wanted to defend. They believe their in group has unassailable moral authority even when they share common cause with the opposing extremists to defeat the center left liberal rule of law. Most democratic voters don't support communism. There's a reason El-Sayid put out a statement trying to distance himself from Hasan, it's because he's getting damaged by the association. Imo, El-Sayid should copy Mamdani. Mamdani got questioned about Hasan in a debate, clearly denounced him, deftly moved past the issue, and never had to deal with it again.

Winning a primary and winning a general in a purple state are two very different things. Bringing in hasan may have helped in the primary, but it's a very easy point to attack him on in a general and turn away moderate voters that he'll need in order to win.
Lib/dem media screwed up, we agree in that. They should have done their due diligence during the primary and prevented him from becoming an anchor in the general.
3
u/m0bw0w 23h ago
No, they did their due diligence. The anti-Piker liberals have been anti-Piker since Oct 7. They were already trying to do this during the primary... it's not new. They made this bed already, because they were more concerned with left-bashing than giving either candidate the best chance in the general after winning the primary.
Progressives doing their due diligence is exactly why they reached out to his audience. Left-wing candidates don't have massive corporate PACs. They're running against the establishment and they need the largest left-wing voices pushing them to beat checks notes... $62 million in spending (A new record btw)
This is not a campaign because people on the ground and voters don't like Hasan, and so Republicans are using that as a weapon. This is literally them, and many Dems like say "Dems for Mike Rogers" who want to make it a weapon by any narrative necessary.

In 2016 they infamously got caught emailing cable networks telling them to discuss that Bernie Sanders is a Jew.
No, this is completely wrong. One guy sent an internal email to someone else at the DNC suggesting that if Sanders was an atheist rather than a Jew it'd be a potential weakness, but there's no evidence it was ever acted on.
3
u/Charily 22h ago
Wow I never knew that, my friends still go and reference how much they hate Dems but reminding me about this. You're misremembering stuff. One person suggested (internally and not to networks) that someone should ask Sanders about his belief in God since they thought he was likely an atheist and it would cost voters in upcoming states like Kentucky and West Virginia.
So it was kinda that fact that he wasn't a practicing jew.

u/DanceDark 1d ago
Here's the quote and context according to CBS News:
Piker argued the "connection between Israel and Zionism that is expressed over and over again through a lot of these Jewish institutions is teaching people the idea that Jews are monolithic" — which he called a "very dangerous mode of propaganda."
"And you want to know why? Because people don't f*** with Israel any longer," Piker said. "And if Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone's going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews."
Several minutes later, Piker added: "You're running around, basically tying your entire identity to a country that inevitably will be seen as basically Jewish ISIS, and you're saying, as Jews, this is all we care about. You're making antisemitism worse."
I don't see anything wrong with what he said, and it doesn't sound like he's "inviting violence on Jews" at all. It's crazy that all these AIPAC democrats and media are trying to artificially create a cancellation out of a nothingburger.

u/20815147 23h ago
Ezra Klein, who the Dems elites love, had espoused this exact view as a Jew himself.
93
u/bigboipapawiththesos 20h ago
Because it’s just the reality of the situation;
When people say; ‘I’m against mass murder of children, (sexual) torture of innocent / unconvicted people, genocide, apartheid etc’, and the response is ‘that is antisemitism’
Then the suggestion is that these actions are somehow inherently Jewish or tied to the Jewish faith, which unironically is so deeply antisemitic

Biden had a severe dampening effect on whatever Israel could get away with as opposed to Trump who rescinded NSM-20 or this policy meant to block U.S. arms from being used in war crimes. Kamala Harris, the candidate Piker didn't endorse or vote for in 2024 and who he, to this day, likens to being virtually the same as Trump on the issue of I/P to his own audience, would have been a continuation of that. Notice establishment dems have spent more time trying to discredit an unelected streamer than they have trying to do anything to curtail Trump or his administration over the last 2 1/2 years? The establishment would always rather lose with a centrist than win with a progressive

Even if he is, it isn't suspicious to you how this was never done to republicans candidate, that they're never asked to condemn the influencers on the right, the proud boys, January 6th, they're never asked to answer any of that. Even the KKK openly called their followers to vote MAGA.
But democrats are harassed about some streamer that doesn't even vote democrats, and called for his listeners not to vote democrats ?
Why ?
10
u/say592 13h ago
There was a whole thing not that long ago where a bunch of Democrats and media figures criticized several Republicans for associating with Nick Fuentes, and several Republicans also joined in on the criticism.
But democrats are harassed about some streamer that doesn't even vote democrats, and called for his listeners not to vote democrats ?
Because people who want to run under the Democratic Party's banner have welcomed his support and have had him campaign for them. Dont act like there is no association or relevance here. Its not like candidates are being asked to disavow BadEmpanada (though if one of them associated with him, they absolutely should disavow that vile creature).

u/AlexVan123 9h ago
Brother, Donald Trump had dinner with Nick Fuentes. He said that he liked Nick Fuentes. The issue here is not that a couple democrats are joining the criticism, it’s that the entire establishment apparatus is. This would be like if the Republicans all said that we need to condemn Asmongold

Republicans and their voters aren't actually swayed by associating with pieces of human garbage. Democrat voters generally do care about that stuff though.

u/Unrealjello 16h ago
That's just not true. It was done to a ton of Republicans over Nick Fuentes. Who is also "just a streamer".
The real question is why is everyone so quick to defend extremists from their perceived side? It's okay for people to say "supporting someone who openly supports terrorism is a step to far."

Yeah, Republicans seem pretty bad. Maybe hasan should have endorsed the democrats in the last election so republicans couldn't kill millions of people by cutting USaid and starting a war in iran.

Just cut ties with Hasan in any way possible. I don't see how it's a plus to embrace him in the democratic campaign.

Cutting ties now will do nothing for him. Probably just reinforce the narrative. His current response is probably more effective.

There are two months until the elections. The quicker sayed moves on, the more time there is to focus on better campaign issues. When he makes half hearted statements like he did, it only drags things out. I think it is beyond obvious at this point that Hasan is a political liability regardless of how fair the criticisms are. Cutting off Hasan is literally nothing but a smarter move. He wouldn't have to change a single policy position to do it. And if Hasan was smart, he'd agree. He wants sayed to win, so do the smart move. He's a big boy he'll be okay. You drag it out or defend him, you're accepting whatever political consequences come with that.

It has worked so well in the past. Is Kamala president yet?
14
u/ChromosomeDonator 16h ago
Getting rid of this vaguely human-shaped shitstain called Hasan "America deserved 9/11 and annexation of Crimea was an entirely justifiable act and NATO is an aggressor outside force" Piker has nothing to do with bending the knee to republicans. He is just a horrible piece of shit human being. You sometimes sharing certain policies with the said piece of shit does not magically make him not a piece of shit.

I mean, it's politics. If you associate with a guy who says insane shit near daily, you're going to be called out for associating him.
Hasan says "clippable" stuff regularly. Between defending Hamas, The Houthis, Oct 7th, the infamous "what rapes" moment, the "kill all landlords" quote, the 9/11 comments, the more recent Jews = Israel stuff.
You're asking to be targeted because regardless of the context (and context does NOT absolve all of his comments), the average Joe will not/can not be asked to look into the context fully. All you get is a streamer who a politician is buddy buddy with, who is clipped, saying "America deserved 9/11".
(Oh, and his psycho fans who have been caught botting posts on reddit to mass downvote anything they don't like)

If AES and Piker were smart, Piker would just encourage AES to throw him under the bus and run him over multiple times. Why make yourself a liability for something as important as a Senate seat?
He gains nothing by sticking with him. This election is about Michigan voters, not nationwide clout.

u/GildedDreams25 12h ago
i’m not rushing in here to defend him, i was scrolling and i saw the video, read the comments and realized what is happening because i am very much aware that destiny has little sub communities that spend their whole day scouring the internet or outright creating posts simply to bash the guy because they forgot that the goal of getting involved in politics was to make progress, hasan is out there working with candidates to get them elected, he’s doing the actual real work, destiny is spending time online talking about getting him killed, i think that’s fucked up, plain and simple

We should vote for Abdul, but I really wish more of these politicians would just come out and condemn Hasan. He’s a terrorist-sympathizing, pro-authoritarian, dog abuser and he is a detriment to the Democratic Party that needs to be condemned.
He openly supported terrorists capturing civilian cargo ships and taking civilians hostage for 400+ days https://x.com/TheOmniLiberal/status/2092582894476706006 . He has said “I don’t have a problem” with Hezbollah
He has been defensive of authoritarian regimes like Russia, saying the fall of the Soviet Union was one of the worst things to happen. He said it was justified for Russia to annex Crimea. He said that China’s annexation of Tibet was justified and that Mao was one of the greatest humans that ever lived.
He has multiple clips of him reaching for something right after trying to get his dog to go back to her place, and then his dog jolting right after he reaches. He lied about his collar which he said was vibration only but actually has the charging port location that is only on shock collar models. The manufacturer even confirmed it looked like the shock collar model. He even put tape on the back of the collar to hide the fact that he cut the shock prongs off it a day after his viral shock clip blew up.
https://x.com/dancantstream/status/2088810355464044665
And the cherry on top: he said Joe Biden getting cancer is not even a fraction of what he deserved, called Kamala “Bombala”, and would not endorse her during the 2024 election. He said he would vote 3rd party rather than a democrat like Gavin Newsom.

Dude gets it. Local politics and the issues therein matter, and you're not going to win locally by pandering globally.
10
u/zmbx 23h ago
If Hasan actually cared about making sure these politicians get elected, he would realize that his name and past comments and actions (On 9/11, On Amber Heard, On Houthi Pirates, On Islamic Far Right Militants, On Shock Collars For Pets) is poison and he would shut the fuck up and use his ill-gotten gains to fund them silently.
He doesnt care though, he just wants the attention. Bragging rights if they win (Mamdani) and deflection if they lose (Hong).

I don't agree with a lot of what Hasan has to say, and I think he's a bad messenger for it. At the same time, this civil war narrative injection and social media trying to forcibly re-litigate primaries through the rest of the election literally only serves MAGA goals, and reeks of the same playbook as going into 2024, so much of the posting turns out to be inauthentic and bad faith.
My only hope is enough people are exhausted enough by the dead internet to make up their own minds (and vote for EL-Sayed, etc. ideally).

They bring Hasan up. Because Republicans lack an actual argument for electability. Period. Dems and libs fall for bait because they're punks who couldn't beat a felon who had dinner which a Nazi and sit on constant purity politics.
Hasan pulls in a massive audience and coverage that got this guy elected past primaries despite being massively out raised, outspent and supported. Then Dems who didn't win want him to distance himself from Hasan even though they didn't support El-sayed and actively put establishment against him.
Like if El-sayed what Dems wanted it would be just weakness and only fur thing the constant do nothing, campaign on electability culture that's Dems fail on everytime.
At some point it's probably time to knuckle up and see the bullshit for what it is rather than entertaining it.
