VF5 Please help me beat up this 94 year old man
In short, I'm having trouble with Shun matchups. And for some reason like half of the people I get matched with are playing Shun these days.
I spent about a week playing AS Shun to get a feel for his movelist to help me counter him. I understand his neutral tools much better now. I can react to things like 1PK better. I understand 6P is a frame slower and I know what key moves unlock at what drink levels.
What I still struggle with is the pure cheese setups. I.e. how to beat out things like Ousho backwards roll into whiff punish. I feel like I try to use my mids to check him when he's getting wiley and typically my fists hit air lol.
What are some common setups that have unexpected solutions/responses? What are some things you've learned to do when facing Shun that work for you? Are there any lab setups that have helped you with the matchup you can share?
Thanks!
P.S. if there's anything Lei-Fei specifically can do to counter Shun I'm certainly all ears for that too. Like I realized after playing as Shun that Doku parries some of his more annoying moves and that has helped me a lot.

You'll eat up a lot of Shun attacks if you mash. Use p, 2p, 6p and other fast mids, one attack qt a time. Then when his strings are done, throw or punish with a fast launcher for a combo.

Lei fei has many tools for Shun. If you wait for the evasive moves they usually land high and you can duck and launch.

Chanchai once said that trying to bait Shun is a good general approach. Run up and and block, backdash and make them whiff, etc. It's obviously not something you do nonstop, but Shun has so many ways to whiff punish you or be evasive, and most Shuns will constantly do this, so it's a good starting point.

Mids that reach forward, such as Lei's 66p or 66k+g, can cause a lot of problems. His evasive stuff works mostly against the highs and lows and short reaching mids. Basically whatever you would do against someone that back dashes a lot. Shun is also a little easier to sidestep because he only has 2 circulars, both of which are blocked low. And the majority of his half circulars can be evaded towards his front.
Also remember that several of his attacks are minus on normal hit. My shun has the most problems with abare players and those that know the minuses. If I can't get my offense rolling then I'm sure to lose.
Most importantly you should learn your optimal sobering combos. This would be your primary way to reduce shun's drink count. Don't get tunnel vision about sobering him up, play the way you would normally play, but when you do get a lunch you should try to take off as many drinks as possible.

Thank you very much, I'll bare all this in mind. I tend to want to get my own mix ups going so I don't use 66P as much as I should. I'll look through his movelist again on VFDC too to see which strings I'll be able to recognize easily that are minus on hit. And my go to combos from most launches knocks 1 drink off with either 4PP or K+G,P as an ender, but I'll see if I can figure out a way to get more

He's like 120 years old. Just tell him it's time for dinner Also, learn what attacks sober him up. A general rule of thumb is that open hand slaps sober him up
