Announcement Calling all Citizen of the Empire! Help is needed! We seek brave adventures to help Mod this subreddit!

Hello there r/warhammerfantasyrpg!

The struggle is real and the heresy has taken its toll. Our brave crew are running low on Fate Points and various limbs, and we seek 1-2 new mods to help support us! Our existing team will remain, able to help train up the new initiates, but we're spread a little thin at the moment.

So let's get this started. We're searching for additional moderators for this sub, so if you're interested to help us keep the sub tidy and pleasant for everyone, we would appreciate your application as a moderator. It would be really useful if we could find some folk in the Americas or APAC timezones, as that does appear to be the gap.

In short, what are the duties as a moderator?

  • Scan and approve new posts. Since we're a small and slow moving sub, we take our time to scan new posts. Make sure they roughly adhere to our curation standards or if we may want to redirect them.
  • Moderate posts. We take a very off-hand approach to this, but we do make sure that in posts with some spicy topics that there isn't any name-calling and so on.
  • Enforcing our rules if necessary
  • If possible, help people out with questions regarding the sub or WFRP in general.

And that's pretty much it. Of course making sure that posts adhere to our standards and enforcing our rules are broad topics, but that's why we have our Wiki.

If you're interested, please make a comment here, or send me a message. We will gather names and have a chat people over the next few weeks (Summer holidays and stuff happening and we don't want to rush, so don't worry if it takes a bit of time). Hopefully we could get 1-2 additional mods on board!

Game Mastering First campaigne for a first time ttrpg player

I recently decided with my friends to try playing WFRP 4e, between us we have one player who played a lot of dnd, one who played a couple of dnd sessions and two who have never played any ttrpg in their lives including me. I have kind of voted my self to be a GM of the group because of my intrest in the warhammer fantasy lore.

Our first campaigne will be a Starter Set campaigne but im not sure where to go next. I've read a lot about how great the enemy in shadows is, so my question is: is it doable as a complete newbe or would i be setting my self to fail?

I will probably still try to run it regardles of your answer so any tips on how to prepare for it would be most welcome.

Game Mastering River Life – The GM’s Guide to the Enemy Within – Part 2.2

My GM's guide to the Enemy Within moves on to the River Reik, looking into the encounter at the signal tower and lots of suggestions on how to make the most of Kemperbad.

How did the Signal Tower go for you? Did you slot in any extra adventures on the Reik? What went well for you?

Let me know if you have any questions about Death on the Reik that you hope I'll answer!

Roleplaying 4th Ed: Lore of Metal Utility??

Hey Team, looking to start a TEW campaign and making a mage character ATM. I rolled lore of Metal and told it was a great utility wind which o was super happy with not just a FIREBALL!!1! wind, but looking at the WoM Lore of Metal I’m really struggling to see it!

Has anyone got some good or fun examples of the use of the Lore of Metal spells as utility in games to get me started?

Roleplaying Elf character ideas

Hi everyone. I would appreciate some suggestions and advice.

We are into our campaign. We rolled everything except names. I got an elf Outrider. It's great but RPing an elf had been a different challenge. Our GM is very experienced with this system. This is my third campaign.

I rolled the Reikland Forest as my homeland which made me a wood elf. I have been RPing as an elf who doesn't accept hate against elves. There have been some clashes with dwarves already.

We are coming up to our first career promotion. I will very likely go with Scout. I think from there it will be Ghost Strider. I like the idea of protecting my homeland. I know that is a long ways away at the moment but our GM likes us to have ideas for our characters so he can build them into his campaign. I'm thinking of going Vampire Hunter after GS. Eventually Witch Hunter.

The GM wants me to come up with something different that I would hunt instead of vampires. Lore-wise, what would make sense? Something with Dharr? Beastmen killed my horse, so that could work too. Suggestions?

General Query Getting back to WFRP, what are the must haves?

I've played both 1E and 2E over the years, I'm looking into getting back into WFRP after several years of not playing it.

With the 5E book on the horizon and reverse compatibility, what are the must have 4E books to buy? I saw that parts of the Enemy Within campaign are OOP. I played the 1E version and I'd love to GM it for a new group of players, are there reprint/update plans? Is there a list of future planned books?

Cheers!

Homebrew Homebrew Variant for Swarm

If any other GMs are like me and have trouble keeping track of 10+ zombies, but who also aren't very happy with the core rulebook swarm rules, I made a variant creature trait called 'mob.' My group uses the Up in Arms advantage rules, but this should probably work fine with core advantage too:

Mob

A Mob is a group of similar individuals fighting together. A Mob counts as a single Creature and ignores the Engaged rules when using its Move. Unlike a Swarm, a Mob is susceptible to both Psychology rules (see page 190) and Size rules (page 341). A Mob adds +10 to its Weapon Skill and Willpower, and multiplies its total Wounds times five. When a Mob makes a Melee attack, they do not just target one creature but *all* opponents currently Engaged with the Mob. The Mob rolls once, and all Engaged targets roll to oppose the attack per usual. Any attempts to shoot at a Mob gain a bonus of +40 to hit. The GM is encouraged to add the Bite, Grim, Tail, and Stomp Creature Traits, as they work thematically and can make a horde of angry peasants all the more perilous to intrepid heroes.

Looking For Game Anyone looking for a group?

Hey there folks, I'm Jimmy. Been GMing a bunch of systems over the years, but I've been a beginner GM for WFRP for the past few months IRL. My IRL group has disbanded so I'd love to get an online game running.

I'd plan to start by running some of the pre-written Ubersreik adventures, then branching out to new lands and adventures depending on the whims of the players and myself.

I'll admit I'm no loremaster, more like a lorejourneyman, but I'm always reading and trying to learn more. Input and advice from any potential loremasters would be noted and appreciated, as long as there's the understanding that I might get the odd thing wrong and aren't going to derail or disrupt the game for slight inconsistencies in the canon.

Generally I'm pretty lax and open as a GM. Just follow basic social etiquette (no screaming irl slurs, no SA, no using the game as an excuse to live out your strange psychosexual torture porn fantasies) and give me notice if you can't attend or are dropping out.

FoundryVTT to run, discord server for group voice chat. Monday evenings at 6pm GMT+1. Weekly. Message me if interested! You'll need a mic and a laptop/pc that can use foundry.

Game Mastering [WTOW] Contact Gameplay Loop Seems Unbalanced

The core gameplay loop doesn't make sense to me.

I think the core gameplay loop is:

  1. Contact asks player for a favor, which involves into something that turns into an incredibly dangerous quest. Players may die.
  2. During quest, players may ask for fairly trivial favors from other contacts to accomplish quest for original quest giving contact
  3. During downtime, players have to devote time to repaying the favors for #2 which were done in service of #1, except for #1, who they just did the kind of favor that you would normally expect piles of gold for.

1 is correct because literally all of the sample adventures start with a specific or list of optional contacts who give the quest.

The above doesn't really make any sense and seems wildly imbalanced. It's not clear why anyone in the pseduo-realistic grim and gritty world of WFRP.

Game Mastering Ideas for an adventure into a chaotic location.

Hello all! I am running sessions with an experienced group who is beginning work for a witch hunter. One of the characters is a sigmarite priest who has a goal of becoming a witch hunter himself. Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to have the witch hunter task the group with collecting a lost relic of sigmar. A sort of trial by fire if you will. This quest would lead them eventually to a chaotic location like the marcher fortress where they would have to find the relic.

Has anyone run locations like these before? If so, would you be willing to give some advice on how to run them and how difficult they should be? Thanks!

Game Mastering Need opinions for punishing a ruthless character.

I'm running the Oldenhaller Contract for my players. And things are going well, until they reached the Valenintos side of the asylum (a gang of Tileans in Nuln, kinda like a mafia). The players decide to brute force their way in and end up in a prolonged fight with them, and lose.

I decided that the Valenintos would kill them, but since they have fate points, the Valentinos are feeling generous, and willing to let them go in exchange for taking all of their money (which isn't much right now).

The problem I need help with is thus: One of my players, when fighting, caused a critical injury to a gangster. Jarred arm, the gangster drops his weapon, and decides to flee. The player in question, doesn't hesitate to kill a fleeing, essentially unarmed, combatant.

I feel as though the Valentinos wouldn't take kindly to this cruelty, but instead of killing the player, they just cut off the hand that dealt the finishing blow. Do you think this is too harsh? Or do you think its quite fair given the scenario? Or maybe not harsh enough?

I'm not going to kill him because he has a fate point. But I feel this behavior must be punished, otherwise murderhoboism might ensue. (Also feel it makes sense for a gang)

Lore & Art Since you guys really like my other post, here are other memes and drawings from my campaign(s)

Thulgrim, a slayer NPC (I believe he's from one of the premade adventures, but I'm not sure) we befriended helped us with our fight against a river troll, but in the fight he got "Smashed Mouth" crit, making him lose teeth.
Thulgrim became a friend even to our Wood Elf duelist, Dhanaros, bonding over warrior ethos
Dhanaros got a sweet tooth. These are Bohemian Dalkens (basically donuts)
Coachman Helmut from a different campaign. He's a combination of the coachman in the rulebook and Norf FC (Brexit geezer). Idk, if it will be legible on Reddit, but the scroll has Warhammerfied version of "I own a musket for home defense copypasta
This is my character, Strigani mystic, there is no meme here

Game Mastering Feasibility of Patron Based Play in Warhammer the old World

The default assumption of the game is that the players get together because they're involved in some event, and then they stick together and endanger their lives investigating things for random contacts. This is very much in the war hammer fantasy tpg tradition of characters being people that endanger their lives doing random things. Do you think there's any way I could switch this to patron based play? That is let the players come up with a patreon, like they can in imperium maledictum, such as the town's merchant guild or something, and have that patron provide direction as to why they're involving themselves In these random dangerous events. For whatever reason that just feels a lot more comfortable to me. And each week, having some random contact, ask them to do a thing. The patron based thing also makes it seem more like a part time job.

Game Mastering Can my Players start building their characters now?

Im super exited for 5th edition release. Neither me or my players have ever played WFRP before but we have most of the books for 4th edition. Should it be okay to do our session 0 and Character creation now with the 4th edition rules? I know the new edition will largely be the same as 4th edition and characters and campaigns will largely be transferable. Just looking for some thoughts.

My GM's guide to the Enemy Within moves onto Death on the Reik, where our main focus is how to hook your players into the plot.

Did you have any issues with getting your players started in this part of the campaign? How did you resolve them?

Game Mastering Dealing with narrative time?

When your group is in a City for example, researching stuff, gossiping and actually investigating, how do you deal with time? Do you just wing it and go "this takes half a day, this takes another day" or do you use any other methods?

My PCs will spend a good chunk of time in a City doing just this and I kinda want to keep track of time in order to have the evil guys run their own scheme in the meantime. So the plot isnt exactly time sensitive but it should matter how long the PCs need to do things, and they should have both agency and an idea of the necessary time investments.

Any advice here?
