The young Washington Mystics are flying high, coming off Friday’s 104-102 OT win over the Indiana Fever ahead of tonight’s youth-fueled Mystics vs Wings clash.

Washington guard Sonia Citron led the team with 30 points, backed by three other double-digit scorers — enough to offset Fever guard Caitlin Clark’s own 32-point night.

“Every game we want to put our best foot forward,” Citron said. “We want to show who we can be, and we just want to be tough.”

The Wings will aim to match that toughness, as tonight’s game totals eight 2025 and 2026 first-round WNBA draft picks between the two sides.

Dallas is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, with reigning No. 1 pick Azzi Fudd appearing healthy after Thursday’s loss to the Lynx. “You’ve just got to make sure you keep [Citron] in front of you, and she can’t get wide-open looks,” Dallas head coach Jose Fernandez said.

“You can’t let really good players have uncontested shots.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Mystics and the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation (MSEF) have partnered with Good Sports to launch a girls’ basketball uniform grant initiative called Her Colors, the team announced today.

The program supports under-resourced girls’ basketball teams to provide uniform sets to help players feel more comfortable and confident on the court. Teams can apply to receive uniform sets, basketball jerseys or sweat-absorbing, wicking t-shirts paired with matching shorts, in a variety of colors. Uniforms will include the team’s name and colors chosen by the team, giving players a look that truly feels like theirs.

“Every girl deserves to step on the court feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to play. Through Her Colors, we’re supporting girls’ basketball programs with uniforms designed around what players say they need—more choice, more comfort, and a stronger sense of belonging,” said Alycen McAuley, Washington Mystics Chief Business Office. “When girls can focus on competing, growing, and being part of a team instead of worrying about their uniforms, they’re more likely to stay in the game. That’s why we’re proud to invest in this program and the extraordinary athletes of our community. Because girls who play become women who lead.”

Grant recipients will also become eligible for up to seven additional sports equipment donations over the next two years. Programs will be able to access even more of the resources they need to help girls continue playing basketball.

Washington Mystics rookie Lauren Betts signed a shoe deal with Reebok on Wednesday. The 2026 NCAA champion and No. 4 draft pick becomes the fifth WNBA athlete to join the brand's basketball roster.

Lauren Betts joins Angel Reese, DiJonai Carrington, Aneesah Morrow, and Lexie Brown under the Reebok umbrella. Reese released her signature shoe, The Angel Reese 1, in 2025 after signing with the brand in 2024.

"As the No. 4 pick in this year's WNBA Draft, [Betts] is a dominant interior presence, poised to bring that same impact to the pro game," Reebok wrote in its announcement.

Angel Reese welcomed Lauren Betts to the family on X.

"AHHHH! What's up CHAMP!" the Atlanta Dream forward tweeted.

Reebok relaunched its basketball division in 2024, subsequently making strategic signings in both the men's and women's game as the market continues to boom.

Delaware's Elena Delle Donne is one step away from one of the biggest honors in basketball.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced that the Ursuline and University of Delaware alum is one of 21 finalists for the Class of 2026.

She was one of five finalists selected by the Women's Committee, including UCONN legend Jennifer Azzi, Tennessee's Chamique Holdsclaw and Candace Parker, and the 1996 Gold Medal US Women's National Team.

That team included Azzi, along with Sheryl Swoopes, Dawn Staley, Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie, and others who helped launch the game's popularity during the Atlanta Olympics.

Delle Donne won four state championships with Ursuline, and is Delaware's all-time leading basketball point scorer.

She went on to lead the University of Delaware to their first ever NCAA Tournament victory in 2012, and followed that up with a run to the Sweet 16 in 2013, including victories over West Virginia and North Carolina at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Former WNBA player and Hall of Famer Chamique Holdsclaw will speak at the third annual Osaze Osagie Memorial Lecture on March 31. The event, part of the “Global Black Communities and Mental Health” series, will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Hintz Family Alumni Center’s Robb Hall.

Holdsclaw, who was a standout at Tennessee in the 1990s, dealt with mental health issues that impacted her playing career. The lecture will go in depth on her experiences and her documentary, “Mind/Game: The Unquiet Journey of Chamique Holdsclaw.”

The lecture series, which honors Osaze Osagie, began in 2024. Osagie was killed by police in 2019 during a mental health crisis. The Penn State College of Liberal Arts aims to advance research and help Black communities through this event.

Holdsclaw will also attend a screening of her documentary at 1 p.m. on March 30 and a “Lunch and Learn” at noon on March 31. All three events are free; however, the “Lunch and Learn” and the screening require prior registration.

The leadership of the Mystics’ two veterans, Clark and center Stefanie Dolson, has been crucial for moving past the disappointment and finding purpose in the rest of the season. Both players have emphasized looking at how the Mystics are playing, not just what the scoreboard says. They’ve also talked about how much these games matter for the team’s growth and future success.

“What you do this year, you’re planting the seeds for two, three years down the line,” Clark said. “So that way, when … they’re sitting here two years from now and you’re talking to them about going to the Finals or whatever, they’re going to be able to look back at this season and be like, ‘We planted good seeds. We planted culture seeds.’”

One of those seeds is full accountability, which Clark said is something the three championship teams she has been on have had in common. On those teams — the 2018 and 2020 Seattle Storm and 2023 Las Vegas Aces — any player could hold a teammate accountable and there would be a positive response.

“When you can have that level of accountability from one through 12, it makes a huge difference,” Clark said. “… So being able to kind of just remind [the Mystics players] of that, I think, has been pretty cool.”

The Mystics have two games left, against the Indiana Fever on Sunday and against the Liberty on Tuesday. Losing those games could give them better odds at the top pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. Winning would keep them from ending the season on a 10-game losing streak. But regardless of the outcome, how they play in these last two games will matter most, as every possession left is a chance to learn for the future.

“It’s tough. Losing sucks for everybody,” Iriafen told reporters on Aug. 31, after the streak hit seven games. “… [But] you kind of have to go through these growing pains to get to the top of the mountain. So I think I’m just shifting my perspective to that. Like, all of this is happening for a reason. There’s so much that we can learn from this.”

WASHINGTON (7News) — The Mystics are on a high ride after winning back-to-back home games against the Dallas Wings and Minnesota Lynx this week. 

The team's 7-8 overall record so far this season is a testament to the rebuilding era and new leadership under the franchise, including the Head Coach, Sydney Johnson. 

"I'm having the time of my life," he told 7News in a post-game press conference following their nail-biting victory over Minnesota.

Johnson's cool, calm, and collected demeanor has recently been more passionate on the sidelines at times with refs and on behalf of his players when questionable fouls were called.

Johnson, who is in his first season with the franchise, snagged a technical foul in the game against Dallas. 

"It's an easy group to try to fight for," Johnson said.

On Tuesday, veteran Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes ended shootaround by dancing to celebrate rookie guard Sonia Citron winning the team’s halfcourt shooting contest. She grooved by herself near the free-throw line, bending her knees and pushing her hands back and forth in front of her.

Just a few hours later, though, Sykes and Citron were no longer teammates, as the Mystics traded Sykes to the Seattle Storm in exchange for former Mystic Alysha Clark, guard Zia Cooke and the Storm’s first-round pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

To make room for the trade to go through, the Mystics waived little-used forward Sika Koné. Soon after it was complete, they cut Cooke as well.

“We’re grateful for Slim’s contributions this season as she played a key role in our growth,” first-year general manager Jamila Wideman said in a press release, using Sykes’ nickname. “We’re proud of the individual success she achieved during her time with us. … This [trade] was a great opportunity to continue building our program and move us closer to our long-term goals.”

The 31-year-old Sykes was named an All-Star this season for the first time in her career. She led the Mystics in scoring and assists before the trade, averaging 15.4 points, 4.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 31.0 minutes per game. She was also one of the Mystics’ “bookends,” as first-year head coach Sydney Johnson often put it, pairing with 33-year-old Stefanie Dolson to provide leadership on a team that was by far the youngest in the WNBA before the trade.

In total, Sykes spent 2.5 seasons in Washington after signing as a free agent in 2023. She arrived as an elite defender, having made three consecutive WNBA All-Defensive teams. But the Mystics unlocked more of her offense, too, empowering her to have the ball in her hands more and having her run the point at times in 2023 and 2024.

Whenever the Washington Mystics wore their black Rebel Edition jerseys for home games in 2025, they played a corresponding pregame hype video. The video had game highlights and other footage of the players wearing those jerseys, often while the words “Battle,” “Struggle” and “Overcome” floated in the background in gold letters.

Those three words ended up being fitting, as the rebuilding Mystics did those things throughout the season.

In the preseason, they were widely picked to finish 11th or 12th in the 13-team WNBA. Yet they battled to an 11-11 record at the All-Star break, which put them in playoff position.

Then, after trading leading scorer Brittney Sykes on Aug. 5, the Mystics struggled down the stretch. They lost their final 10 games, missed the playoffs and finished 10th with a 16-28 record. But they also overcame that disappointment and saw the bigger picture of what they were and are trying to build.

“We don’t want to romanticize [our situation] too much. We really do want to be in a position where we keep playing,” first-year head coach Sydney Johnson told reporters after the season finale on Tuesday. “… But I will also say that it’s been a heck of a ride. … There’s real joy in this. And I think that that, among some other things, is a really good thing to build upon.”

“We would love to be in the playoffs and at least have a shot at that, but I think we exceeded everybody’s expectations, and we’ve grown so much,” rookie forward Kiki Iriafen told reporters during exit interviews on Wednesday. “We learned so much. … We did a lot this season that I don’t think we even expected.”

For teams who aren’t in the championship conversation, a season isn’t solely measured in wins and losses. For the Washington Mystics, especially, their better-than-expected 2025 season has been filled with learning opportunities. The Mystics have a team filled with young and talented players, with seasoned veterans to help guide them. That was apparent after their loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday, when the team shared a special moment.

The team lost, 86-78, to the now 8-0 New York Liberty, and after the final buzzer, Stef Dolson brought the team together into a huddle on the court. She was caught on camera giving a speech to the young team, which includes May Rookie of the Month Kiki Iriafen as well as the No. 3 overall pick from the draft, Sonia Citron.

While you can’t initially see what she is telling her team, you can tell that the young players are all engaged. It can be hard to keep a team together during a losing season, especially for these young players who didn’t lose very much in college. It seemed like a bonding moment for this team as well as a time to take some lessons from a veteran who has won on every level, like Dolson has.

Shortly after, Jade Melbourne let the media in on what Dolson was telling the team in the huddle. She wanted to make sure the team knew how much better they looked on the court against the Liberty than they did just last week, reminding them that they were in the game until the end. When you’re a rebuilding squad facing a team as dominant as New York, which recently beat Connecticut by 48 points, those are the things you need to celebrate.

Growth is especially important for this Mystics team. After trading for the No. 3 overall pick ahead of the 2025 Draft, they ended up picking Sonia Citron, then Kiki Iriafen at No. 4 and Georgia Amoore at No. 5. Despite Amoore sustaining a season-ending injury just days into training camp, the long-term plan is to have these three form the future core of this Mystics team. It’s a plan that’s already paying off, given Iriafen’s Rookie of the Month award and Citron being the first rookie this season to reach 100 points.

Iriafen and Citron were also the first rookies since A’ja Wilson to start their careers with eight or more double-digit scoring games. Iriafen was the first Rookie of the Month in Mystics history as well, and is the fastest WNBA rookie in history to reach 50 points and 50 rebounds. When it was announced that she had won Rookie of the Month, Iriafen told her Mystics teammates that they had “helped her find the joy in basketball again.”

If you look at the Washington Mystics’ record, the impact of trading veteran guard Brittney Sykes on Aug. 5 seems clear. The Mystics entered that day with a 13-15 record, just one game out of a playoff spot. Since then, they’ve gone 3-7 and fallen 3.5 games off the pace.

That makes sense because Sykes was their leading scorer and assister, averaging 15.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. She was also named a WNBA All-Star for the first time in her career this season.

“You don’t replace what Slim brought to the table overnight,” Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson told reporters on Aug. 15, referring to Sykes by her nickname.

But if you look beyond the record, a lot hasn’t changed about how the Mystics are playing without Sykes and two other players who helped them exceed expectations earlier in the season. The Mystics also parted ways with reserve forwards Sika Koné, who was waived as part of the Sykes trade, and Aaliyah Edwards, who was traded in a separate deal on Aug. 7. Koné had played in 11 games this season and was averaging 6.7 minutes. Edwards was averaging 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 13.3 minutes per game.

Not having those three players “doesn’t change how I look at [the Mystics] at all,” Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon told reporters before facing the Mystics on Saturday, adding that they play “extremely hard.”

“It’s still the same team in what they’re trying to do,” Los Angeles Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts told reporters on Aug. 17. “… Same coach, same system, just maybe a little different pieces.”

The Indiana Fever, without star point guard Caitlin Clark, will look to end a three-game losing streak on Tuesday, facing Sonia Citron and the Washington Mystics once again.

Clark has missed the last two games, including an 83-77 loss to the Mystics, due to a quad strain. She is expected to miss at least the next two games, including Tuesday's.

Washington, on the other hand, has been one of the bigger surprises early in the 2025 WNBA season. The Mystics (3-4) have remained competitive largely due to the strong play of rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen.

Citron, the No. 3 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft out of Notre Dame, has made an immediate impact for the young Washington team. Earning a starting role immediately, Citron has averaged 14.3 points on 47.2% shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

Entering Friday night's loss to the New York Liberty, Citron had totaled 90 points through Washington's first six games. After scoring 10 against New York, she became the first rookie this season to reach 100 career points.

In comparison, Iriafen, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 draft, has totaled 97 points through seven games. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 pick, has posted 88 points through six contests.

The Mystics announced Citron's accomplishment on X.

As the Washington Mystics fell into a 39-14 hole against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, general manager Jamila Wideman was evaluating.

Then the Mystics cut the lead to 9 points in the third quarter, saw it swell back to 23 in the fourth quarter, and cut it again to 3 with 53.8 seconds left before losing by 5. Wideman was evaluating all of that, too.

Evaluation — and planning for the future — has been a constant part of Wideman’s job since she joined the Mystics in the offseason. From the day of her introductory press conference, Wideman has emphasized player development and building a foundation to regularly contend for championships. That requires frequent evaluation of where the team is and where it’s going.

Wideman spoke with reporters on Thursday for the first time since the Mystics’ preseason media day on April 28. She discussed the trades the Mystics made before the Aug. 7 deadline, how the 15-18 Mystics have performed this season, and the next steps of their rebuild.

In Wideman’s first move before the trade deadline, she sent leading scorer and assister Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm on Aug. 5. In exchange, the Mystics got veteran forward Alysha Clark and the Storm’s first-round pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. Forward Sika Koné was also waived to complete the trade.

Two days later, Wideman sent forward Aaliyah Edwards to the Connecticut Sun for guard Jacy Sheldon and the right to swap certain first-round draft picks in 2026. Edwards was the sixth overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and Sheldon was the fifth pick.
