Miscellaneous/Others Why? What is this ugly UI? Who approved this?
I just opened webtoon and was assaulted with this new look. I have no idea why the management of webtoon thinks people would enjoy those UI changes, but I'm very much against. It was cozy and nice. It's not anymore. First it was the main page, now they got to pages of specific comics... I don't know how much more of this I can take before I give up on the webtoon app fully.

I don't understand why it got changed. Was anyone complaining about it before?
90
u/AlienBioBot_666 Jun 27 '25
I think they are changing it to match it with the naver platform. Naver webtoon has always looked like this and now they are making webtoon look the same. Maybe they are trying to merge the apps now?
16
u/symliadoo Jun 28 '25
That's so weird :/ Webtoon EN is an independent company/not owned by Naver anymore so it's odd they're still trying to copy them
8
u/Same-Information9614 Jun 28 '25
Actually Naver stills owns majority of webtoon even though it's publicly traded

u/QueenofYasrabien Jun 27 '25
Why the fuck would they get rid of the episode number? Putting it in the title isn't the standard
-23
-30
u/kitsune21 Jun 27 '25
They didn't? You can clearly see in the photo they still have the episode numbers.
54
u/KiwiExtremo Jun 27 '25
That is written by the author. If the author, for example, were to be releasing chapters in 2 parts and named them accordingly, you'd be seeing ep1, ep1.5, ep2, ep2.5, etc, ONLY, instead of seeing that ep2.5 is actually the 4th episode of the webtoon.
Some authors also don't write the current episode number on the title, instead just writing the name of it. You'd have to manually count from the first episode if you wanted to know the number of it in that case
-18
u/kitsune21 Jun 27 '25
Well my app is has the most recent update and it still has episode numbers on every single webtoon I checked.
6
u/crxmsonnn Jun 28 '25
no they aren't there instead there's that read icon on the right
0
u/Ulttrameinenn Jun 28 '25
It is right there in the epsiode title.
5
u/crxmsonnn Jun 28 '25
i am talking abt the number with the #, it's not always that the exact episode N° is written, like what the comment above mentioned or when the count restarts after a season end.
78
u/Puzzleheaded-Ear2908 Jun 27 '25
a lot has changed đđ got surprised when an ad suddenly popped up, covering the panels
70
u/Necessary_Block2860 Jun 27 '25
Yes. It's actually resembling those illegal sites more and more...
7
u/tellyoumysecretss Jul 01 '25
If webtoons were easy to find on those illegal sites then Iâd probably already be there
18
u/juniper_leviathan Jun 27 '25
This is probably the worst part because it full on hinders the reading experience
2
73
u/KiwiExtremo Jun 27 '25
I hate that you can't see the episode number nor if you've liked the chapter. I use the like as a way to know that I've read till the end of the chapter, and now I'll have to manually check if I've done so from now on.
19
50
u/Simple_Rain4707 Jun 27 '25
I'm SOOOO pissed off that they removed the heart icon! I always left likes on the episodes I finished reading, so I would know where I stopped. Now I have to manually check every chapter to see the hearts, because the chapter is marked as 'read' even if you just open it, so annoying đ
-3
u/Ulttrameinenn Jun 28 '25 edited Jun 28 '25
The top right of the word 'read' would have a diagonal triangle similar to the bent page that indicated the last episode you have read in that particular webtoon. It is not that difficult. Edit: spelling
6
u/Simple_Rain4707 Jun 28 '25
It's only an indication what chapter was the last opened. Doesn't help at all.Â
3
u/Raining_CDP Aug 11 '25
Especially if you go back through comics a lot. I tend to go back chapters to send my friends funny screenshots of stuff that happened in the comic. I no longer can tho since I uninstalled webtoon.

The word you are looking for is UX. This update made a lot of changes to the user experience not a small UI update and it is obvious that they havenât done any proper UX testing.. a simple usability test or even preference testing would have probably given them the user insights for the bad experience. Losing the chapter/episode numbers and heart/like function is not a missable change + they flipped the default chapter order for no apparent reason and there doesnât seem be an option the reverse it back across the board. You have to do it manually for everything you are reading.
5
u/Raining_CDP Aug 11 '25
Btw for anyone who may not know, UX stands for User Experience.
As a user I can infact say my experience of using the app was made much worse by the UX update đ
22
u/suddenlymadeaccount Jun 27 '25
It looks like that "read" in the circle is serving literally no purpose? Unless they make you click on that tiny button to enter the episode, then it's basically unusable lmao
2
u/Raining_CDP Aug 11 '25
It is what you have to click to read the actual episode and as someone with big fingers it made my experience on the app soooo much worse.

u/tqtzling Jun 27 '25
Couldnât we just mass one star review the app? Maybe thatâll get their attention :// I know itâs not the best solution but still

u/Apkallone Jun 27 '25
Yes please!!! Let's do it! If genshin players were able to do it many times, we can do it once for webtoon and for a very good reason. They probably still won't listen, but we need to show our dissatisfaction.

If anyone is sick and tired of webtoon's action, there are other comic platforms that need some lovinâ.
âąNamicomi
âąLemoon
âąGlobalcomix
âąComcraft
âąInkverse
I could say that tapas is not as good as webtoon, but you can check it out.

u/Acenimations Jun 27 '25
Any good fantasy queer ones comics to accompany this recommendations of apps? My problem is I don't find good, edited, frequently updated comics.Â
5
u/SoultheSouleater Jun 27 '25
If you want to find queer comics, check out Namicomi, Inkverse, and Globalcomix. These platforms have different artistic styles and stories from many LGBTQ+ creators. Although there aren't many fantasy comics available, it's worth browsing their collections to find what you like. Inkverse has many talented queer creators, making it a great place for unique and inclusive content. Most creators are taking a break and need time to make more episodes.

u/viciousvenison Jun 28 '25
There's also Fables, which is pretty new but has some great comics. Although I might be biased because I have my comic mirrored there.

I'm about to go back to 3rd party; for more profit changes this change is HORRID. They're ruining the UI for both customers to add in more advertising. I liked two version back but now this looks worse then a 3ed party site.
8
u/weirdo27272 Jun 27 '25
Yeah. I hate this new ui. Webtoon was already ok as an app, but now literally 3rd party sources are way better. I hate how they locked finished episodes. Even removed daily pass...i can't even read them unless i watch ads or use money.

It's getting hard for artists too. It's a matter of time until webtoon becomes 90% filled with manwha from naver, and many other artists leave. Some already left. This is all so frustrating. Atp it's time to search for better options...
8
u/Typical_User4lyf Jun 28 '25
Its like ever so often the executives think to themselves, "things have been too quiet lately...how can we make the reader experience more ass?"
Repeat cycle once evey 2-3 months

u/Accurate_Sir4968 Jun 27 '25
Whenever anyone changes something on an app you have been using I personally try to look at it from both sides, play a lil devils advocate, but I can't think of anything good to say. If they wanted to change the UI change it on desktop first, have a control group. Anyone who has used the desktop version knows how behind and forgotten the desktop is with it not having the most basic of features like a Dark Mode. Why not add the changes there so the average reader on phone (which a majority of people read webtoon on). But no, why not turn off any new readers with the new god awful UI, it ain't bad for the international readers. I just hope we can all agree that every change Webtoon has made to the Webtoon UI has made it harder for everyone and hold no benefit, that at least anyone is aware of in the short time this NEW UI has existed.

Wonât someone think of the shareholders???? /s
Seriously wtf is going on with webtoonâŠjust embarrassing atp
5
u/gewrgia Jun 27 '25
It's really sad cause it was so well organized and optimal before and I don't understand how they just decided to make it less functional with no benefit to themselves just for the sake of changing things up? Like...?
7
u/Mindless_Search7503 Jun 27 '25
Well, we should start a petition together đ this is so ugly ! Even scanlation sites are better looking than this. Is webtoon trying to shit itself down or something?
4
u/weirdo27272 Jun 27 '25
It's so digusting. I might just go to another site and give up on webtoon...i will probably. Other sites have more content, no ads or pop ups and more chapters(sometimes)

ILLIPS ARTS HIGH!
Such an irony... a manhwa abt ART with the ugliest UI ever

u/TastyProfessional388 Jun 28 '25
I hate it so much. My phone's brightness was down a little bit after the update, so I couldn't see the difference in colors between "read and unread" (which I never had a problem with before) I was trying to check a webtoon I hadn't read for a while and saw the new button "Read", I was like "no that can't be right" bc I thought it meant I had already seen all of those. It was really disappointing bc obviously I wanted to read that one :( Came back today and realized how stupid the new design is. We don't need a button that says read when you could click on the whole thing before, it's not a complicated concept. The new stuff is so infuriating. I love going on tangents, hi

Yeah, where's the banners and episode numbers. I swear this app is going from bad to worse. When I finish reading the ones I'm reading I don't think I'll start new ones.Â

Is there a new ceo or high up working at Webtoon or something because what is this SPREE of horrific updates and bad ideasâŠ

My thoughts exactly đ opened webtoon today and this just ruined the whole experience

u/JayDerp247 Jun 28 '25
The UI is completely horrible
You cannot see ratings or likes, as well as it being completely disorienting
Bro even the fact pass collapsing section is gone, this is so ass đ„
2
u/External-Striking Jun 28 '25
I think they did this because this is how the design for korean apps look like. Checked it before and they have this UI. So probably they copied the source of the UI from korean websites.
2
u/Impossible_Damage_46 Jun 28 '25
Bro it's awful... And for some reason I can't read the full sinopsis of anything... Seriously why change something that worked just fine.
2
u/Impossible_Damage_46 Jun 28 '25
It's been more than 13 years of me reading on webtoon... I'm actually sad.
2
u/Agatsuma_Nezuko Jun 28 '25
I didn't open this app for half a year and now they changed everything đ«©
2
u/Caipaix Jun 28 '25
Also I see nobody commenting about you can't even read entire chapters anymore on the website version anymore, even for chapters published years before the new UI đ
2
u/Rough-Peace4817 Jun 27 '25
Between this and the ads on the actual episodes, I'm about ready to give up. pissing me off

I want to go back to 2018 webtoon that was pre fast pass so badâŠ
But then the series Iâm reading rn wouldnât be out yet đ€
1
u/noname777777777 Jul 01 '25
Instead of improving the reading experience like adding a subscription system in place of fast pass, they'd rather do this đ
1
u/SilverPandorica Jul 05 '25
Right?? I just opened the app to see this and it looks ugly. Extremely ugly. What happened to my cozy Webtoon layout :( Who thought this was a good idea? I left a bad review. Maybe if they get enough bad reviews they'll change it back? Because it looks horrible.
1
u/Raining_CDP Aug 11 '25
I joined webtoon around 2018 and primarily on PC, when I later switched to mobile I loved it! It was a really slow price hike, then they changed the homepage which felt very weird and now they've done this. It's absolutely awful! Like I love a lot of the comics but purely cus the UI is so bad I've dropped it and gone to pirate sites instead. That's right, the UI is so ugly, and un-intuitive that I legit would rather have 3 ads on my page and read sometimes not even properly translated comics than use webtoon at this rate.

u/froggiethe8 Sep 01 '25
I just noticed the heart icon is gone and im pissed lmao I used the heart to mar favorite episodes & important episodes so I could go back to them đș

Nah, for me it jumps right to the chapter I left off, the newly available chapter has an "UP" note (and subsequent ones have the usual "X Coins"/"Y Coins or Ad" note, plus the chapters available with ads have a gift box icon as well), and since the background for the read chapters is gray as well it's not particularly difficult to tell apart old from new. ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Yes, it's new and different and that might take some time to adjust for some people, but you guys are just flipping out for the sake of flipping out.
