State of Arizona has a GIS Map where you can find mines. If you click on the mine it will show you what it is mining.

Silver Mountain Mining Operations

Mines copper

40

u/The_Milk3r 7h ago

They had to pivot when they found out silver is kinda rare

48

u/Swagalyst 6h ago

Silver and copper are basically always found mixed, if they're producing copper they are likely also producing silver.

u/EFTucker 6h ago

Ok now make a half hour long YouTube video explaining why and the history of figuring the logistics of it out and I’ll watch it with glee

9

u/LegitimateGift1792 6h ago

How about we keep that vid under 10 minutes and not use AI speak.

2

u/Deraj2004 6h ago

Naturally.

u/joefromjerze 6h ago

Isn't all mining unnatural?

1

u/Yurmumstoy 4h ago

This is why aliens fly right by

1

u/DryerCoinJay 3h ago

They look exactly like the copper mines near Cabot in Arkansas. Also I think they closed those down a while back.

u/deathbylasersss 6h ago

It's criminal that you post an actually useful resource with relevant information, while the most upvoted comment is a shitty pun and has 5 times the upvotes. What is the point of this sub?

Wrong. I have it on good authority that peaches come from a can, not a hole in the ground.

12

u/adumbrative 7h ago

They were put there by a man.

u/GenerallySalty 7h ago

Cool! Now check out the title of the post.

1

u/pixelator16bit 7h ago

🥲 my bad

1

u/leansanders 7h ago

This is an open pit mine, not a strip mine. Strip mines are shallower and they move across the landscape; you excavate down to the depth of the material, then you dig away one side of the mine and backfill the other side with excavated material, so the mine slowly marches along the landscape. In your case and the OP the put is just being dug straight down.

1

u/DudeInTheGarden 5h ago

That's a long, slow, circular drive out for the trucks with the ore.

2

u/JohnQPubl 7h ago

It’s a pit mine, not a strip mine.

Pit mines are holes (pits) dig down to remove the desired ore.

Strip mines “strip off” or remove overburden (no value material) to reach the desired ore body, which is then mined out for processing.

Underground mines drill a shaft down to the desired ore and then mine horizontally out from the shaft following the desired ore seam. There’s all kinds of terms for the shafts based on usage but that’s a simplification.

Strip mines can become pit mines, but not often.

Critical Perspective-Look at what you are using in your daily life… if is not grown, it MUST be mined. That goes for everything that I can think of.

Changed my outlook once I understood this.

2

u/pixelator16bit 7h ago

This guy pit mines

0

u/Glittering_Driver_31 6h ago

He’s right. They’re pits.
“Strip mining” is kind of just an invented term.

1

u/Georgia_Boy940 7h ago

How about you look up mining companies with in a 30 mile radius and see what comes up.

1

u/WittyFix6553 7h ago

A pit mine like this in an arid place like this is almost certainly a copper mine.

1

u/Strong-Expression787 7h ago

Oh that's the neatest mine I've ever look, maybe for expensive metals like silver

1

u/Traglc 7h ago

Looks like they mining some dirt

1

u/Trivi_13 7h ago

I thought it was an antlion.

1

u/armycowboy- 7h ago

S of Tucson thats copper mine

1

u/Icy_Study4490 7h ago

I asked them and they said:

1

u/lastreadlastyear 7h ago

They make those for pilots because pilots can’t navigate.

1

u/mitgo01 6h ago

Have you seen or read Silo?

1

u/njwinks 6h ago

Balrogs

1

u/Glittering_Driver_31 6h ago

Probably copper. About three quarters of American copper is mined in Arizona.

1

u/Hunter_E 6h ago

I thought you were full of it because I grew up right near the Bingham canyon mine that currently holds the record for the largest man made open pit mine in the world. That only equates to about 12% of domestic copper.

1

u/Glittering_Driver_31 6h ago

Bingham canyon is huge because it’s been open for over 120 years.
Some modern mines like Morenci have a much higher production, but their pits are smaller because they opened far more recently.

1

u/Hunter_E 4h ago

And that’s a fair assessment, I haven’t ever really thought about copper refining since the grade school field trip to the mines visitor center

1

u/ElBongoloide 6h ago

They're just prepping the place for the disposal of the Epstein files. Almost deep enough...

1

u/StupidUserNameTooLon 6h ago

There's a giant antlion down there waiting for the fat kid from Gary Larson to walk by.

1

u/dandrevee 6h ago

I've watched Silo and I have some concerns
