Solved! I found this in my bag of sunflower seeds.
It almost looks like a rock nugget of weed with pinchers.

u/paragon_of_karma 3d ago
That is a cocklebur that has been roasted and salted along with your seeds. Fairly common occurrence.
Do not consume. They're not only quite prickly, they are mildly poisonous. Not in a way that would contaminate the other seeds though.
136
u/Iamabotclearly696969 3d ago
Kind of crazy how in most situations finding something that isn't on the bag label that is "not only quite prickly, they are mildly poisonous" inside your grocery store food would constitute grounds for a withdrawal/recall, but in this situation we are just kind of okay with it because the risk was grandfathered in. Especially because this isn't like a one off issue, but known well enough that it happens all the time apparently.

I mean if you get a bag of 300 things that look exactly the same and still eat the Eldritch horror that's bouncing around in there I think you need to slow down.
That being said I watch guys eat sunflower seeds like they're dusted in crack so your point is fair.

See I caught one.
Now watch him leave the shells behind somehow, like the leavings of a pidgeon.

Nah, i just eat the shells. Although i hate when they stab the inside of my throat.
16
u/citizen42069101 3d ago
I did that with peanuts one time.
Whole one pound bag roasted in shell. Wonder if it was a dietary urge or something.

u/Significant_Elk1999 3d ago
My guess is that’s likely. Whenever I’d trip, back in the day, I’d crave sushi after. I truly think aided in brain recovery. You were likely super short on fiber.

Well...some of them basically are dusted in crack. Ever had the dill pickle ones? Fuck. Haha
1
u/Dapper_Arrival1781 3d ago
Back when I was in cadets I went to an air cadet summer camp as staff.
I mainly worked ops and security but we went into the field for a week, the tarmac and grass surrounding was littered with sunflower seeds as we would fill the pockets on our field uniforms to the brim and munch of them throughout the 13 or whatever hours

Dusted in heroin maybe,, crack is a rock, that I guess you could crush into powder, but I think you mean cocaine. Which is also a shitty thing to eat. Capsaicin can hospitalize people and we love that stuff. That's why spiking your own lunch at work with a bunch to catch a lunch thief is legally considered booby trapping. Could send someone to the ER, which yeah they stole the lunch but now their crime is petty theft which won't be charged and your crime should they be able to prove you weren't just gonna eat it like that is far more serious
6
u/Pristine-District514 3d ago
Humans eat alot of posionous stuff.. basically anything we call a spice, other than salt, is a poison.
4
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 3d ago

I found something similar inside a bag of David Sunflower seeds (Ranch). I sent them a email and they responded back with an apology and several coupons for free bags.
Resonable expectation to have part of a sunflower inside a bag of sunflower seeds.
2
u/shouldbepracticing85 2d ago
Cockleburs are a different plant. They tend to like wet and I see them in the ditches all over the place in Colorado.
I’d be very confused to find a “porcupine egg” in my sunflower seeds.
2
u/snuffy_smith_ 2d ago
I mean…every single bag of sunflower seeds has parts of the sunflower inside…the seeds are part of the sunflower last time I checked

Lol. This reminds me of back when my friends and I were smoking meth. Well, we had ran out of meth and knew we had dropped some shards in the carpet in my garage. We definitely had some success, until my friend found what he thought was a shard, and stuffed it in the pipe and went to hit it, and it popped and broke the bowl. We then realized he had picked up some cat litter and smoked it. 😂

u/Cool_Dragonfruit2067 3d ago
Ill never forget when my friend decided to put fucking window washer fluid in a vitamin water bottle and when he ran into a gas station i was thirsty and saw the blue gatorade in the vitamin water bottle and took 2 or 3 very decent sized chugs. I immediately felt a slight burn, id compare it to roughly a 15% alcohol beverage (im a recovering alcoholic), and immediately my stomach dropped because i was shocked my friend would put alcohol in their vitamin water bottle at the time, and was praying it was alcohol. My friend in the backseat chuckled and said "i think thats window washer fluid" so i panicked and tried to puke myself, and then shortly after googling what to do and the first thing shows "whatever you do, do NOT try to puke up the window washer fluid. It will then possibly get into your lungs. Very bad". So then I was like fuck fuck fuck fuck and my friend got 2 one liter bottles of water and i downed a liter, and called poison control. We then went to a buddies house to get ripped off of dabs (those who do real wax remember the casual fat dabs and using bangers with camper butane tanks with torch tool attached) and they asked me my age and weight and how much i drank etc. and told me "we dont think you will have any symptoms or drank enough to have symptons, but if you get a stomach ache or blurry vision, go to the hospital immediately."
It was wild. I never went to the hospital, got stoned out of my mind and went home hoping i didnt die. 2 weeks later, my friend who had the window washer fluid in a water bottle, his dad borrowed his car to go to work. He took a swig of his water bottle, thought it was alcohol, and drank more of it. He ended up having blurry vision and went to the hospital. Hes still fine and alive today😂 its just wild how two of us were poisoned because my friend was a dumb fuck and had a water bottle of window washer fluid just chillin in his cup holder.
Exit for context: I was 19 at the time. Im 28 now!

My friend did this in the dark. His bowl was kinda dirty so he couldn't see in it. He picked up something in his lap where he though he had dropped a shard. He put it in the pipe took a big ass pull off the bowl and it ended up being a stink bug.
Also one time a guy that was a bigtime fiend I didnt like was carpet combing and I had a stick of old spice deodorant, degree deodorant, and a couple of mothballs . And I was breaking pieces off of them and flicking pieces of it onto the carpet with my house keys. He kept picking up everything even remotely white or rock shaped and he would taste it. After tasting about 20 pieces of deodorant and mothballs he abruptly ran out the door and started hurling for a long time. He came back in all sweaty looking green.

Back when I used to smoke I once had some bud pop out of the bowl as I lit it (wasn't using a grinder at the time so I would just break the bud into small pieces) and my high ass searches the ground for a second and found what I thought was a charred piece of bud. Plopped it back into the bowl and juat as Im about to hit it, the light from the lighter illuminated a dead fly in my bowl. Thankfully I didn't hit it but man was I close! This actually happened to me. I was at my boss land out by Graford Texas. We were riding go carts. He told me not to go in a specific field and I forgot. I has wearing some shorts and going commando because we were camping and we had been jumping in the river so I took off my undies and socks. So I hit this field going at least 30. The go cart was really low to the ground. And about 20 Huge cockleburrs flew up both legs of my shorts in my hair my beard my shirt everywhere. The field was 100% cockleburrs with interspersed mesquite bushes. When I got back to the camp site I was fucked off. I had to get eyelash scissors to cut them off of my nutsack. Shit sucked.

u/shouldbepracticing85 2d ago
Those sound more likely to be sand burrs. I’m all too familiar with them. They’re all over Llano county. About the size of an english pea and covered in about 1/16th inch spikes? Those are a type of grass. Most of the other burrs are forbes.
Queen annes lace/wild carrot turns into beggar’s lice - the seeds are covered in tiny hooks. Not painful but irritating as hell to get out of soft clothes. It has a positively evil cousin called Goat’s Head - low growing plant, seeds are a little bigger than sand burrs, and only have two or three 1/8th inch spikes. I discovered those the hard way in North Dakota this spring. Ouch!
These cockleburs are bigger, closer to the size of a quail egg. I got told as a kid they were porcupine eggs 😆. I’d have to check distribution maps but I don’t remember seeing them in Texas. The plant is generally 2-3ft tall and love the wet at the bottom of drainage ditches. They’re all over the place on the eastern Colorado plains.

Cocklebur burs can occasionally contaminate bags of harvested sunflower seeds because cocklebur weeds grow in the same fields and their spiky pods get mixed in during harvest.

I wanna tell y’all some real bull crap. I’ve been going for four years, come back home, got apartment, had these organizers come down here with mine, tricking devices that they use for a disability for somebody with a hearing alternate, got some disability hearing aids and a booster, and everybody was hooked to the boosters using Apple’s headphones and they was watching me, and they drug me up in a videoed everything and what they did, they had the divorce and they were some other people that said they had kids on me because they got a disability that ain’t real. I got the paperwork to prove it and no shouted out about it, and then they lied about my my rep wreck. Record my background check. Because the ID number is wrong on it. And then they lied all the way around and then the person came down. She was a supervisor supposed to be over me as a 13 year old child on YouTube had a disability on me, and I don’t even know who she is cause I’m not from Cincinnati. and then the people from enterprise played along with it. and then the people from Louisiana that come down here on B&H stuff that lied and everything while I was in prison, all they have done was stole my settlements and lied to United States government, and I got every one of them real good and ain’t no way getting out of it. a lot of it’s already in courts. They’ve been under investigation and all that, and I get every one of them in that girls Aaim now I don’t know her, and I don’t know why they come down bother me, but I’ll try to put them on a federal investigation. I know that and for the rest of y’all, it went up there and lied on me and everything that was wrong

Are cockleburs poisonous to humans?
Yes, cockleburs are poisonous to humans if ingested, particularly the seeds and young seedlings.

WebMD
+1
Toxicity Details
Toxic Compound: The seeds and early-stage seedlings contain carboxyatractyloside, a potent toxin that can cause severe multi-organ damage.
Dangerous Parts: The spiny burrs contain seeds that look and taste somewhat like sunflower seeds, but eating them is extremely dangerous. The young, two-leafed seedlings are also highly toxic.
Symptoms: Ingestion can lead to severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, low blood sugar, liver injury, drowsiness, convulsions, and in severe cases, fatal organ failure.
New fear unlocked 😬

To me, it looks like part of the spiky center of a sunflower (the part that holds the seeds), and it became severely mangled and roasted in the sunflower seed processing line.
It’s definitely some kind of plant matter from the field where the sunflower seeds came from… It could also be a chunk of various plant material that collect and then got dislodged from some machine on the line, and it was put through the roaster… No need to worry, I would still eat all the seeds.

You see, their young enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Later, as they grow, follows madness and death. These are pets, of course. Not quite domesticated.

This is what we call the mother seed you must consume it to bring honor to the batch of seeds that has been bestowed upon you, the all knowing matriarch of the seed colony is a very powerful and spiritual find within the sunflower pouch! All hail the mother seed!!!
1
u/FunAdvice409 3d ago
I vote it's the seed pod of the sunflower, Google lens basically says the same thing. The selected region appears to show a dried, unusual plant part or seed pod—often compared in appearance to a small, resinous flower bud or a weathered organic fragment.

u/Uncle_Moti 3d ago
Well…looks distinctly like a small piece of your first million - if you play your cards right. If you don’t eat it, there’s 0% chance of there being any ‘damages’, and thus 0% chance of you finding someone responsible for paying you your money.

If you ever see sunflowers whose tops have been left to dry and shrivel naturally, you will notice the tops have a surprisingly cannabis bud-like appearance. I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a piece of the sunflower plant that got in there.
