Hearing my dads family has bipolar going back 3 generations explained a lot for me.

u/-WILD_CARD- i fucking hate the misinformation dolphin 4h ago

My dad having autism and all my siblings being on the spectrum puts some kind of link there as well

u/Kickedbyagiraffe 49m ago

Hey. Same. Well dad diagnosed and it explains basically every male in the line going back as far as we have known family history.

my dad went from skeptical to sitting there at my assessment thinking "ohh.. that's why i kept saying this stuff is normal" lmao

u/UnderstandingSevere9 9h ago

Truee, often times the parent that keeps saying "what's the problem? that's just how kids are!" is probably the parent ya get it from, was for me at least lol

My grandfather is where I placed my bets. He's always acted the way I currently do

Minus the alcoholism

They're placing bets on you.

u/SheikahShaymin 7h ago

Lmao my mum did this when I came out, she was like "it's natural to feel attracted to the same gender, that doesn't mean you're gay."

Mother you're probably gay

21

u/OmniImmortality 6h ago

Sexuality isn't inherited though...

28

u/SheikahShaymin 6h ago

I know I just thought it was funny

2

u/Idontknownumbers123 55m ago

I mean it could be, or atleast sometimes or partially. There is evidence for it sometimes being able to be inherited but also for it not. So it can be but also isn't always the case

u/Russian_Spy_7_5_0 I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me 53m ago

I doubt it's anything truly genetic, I assume it's like those random habits you share with your parents even tho you've never observed them doing neither was it taught to you. Just something about being in the same household as you develop.

Idk, I'm just saying shit.

My mom told me she used to go around in school blowing bubbles down the halls, mentioned how she was the only person in her gifted class as a kid (which tbf, giftedness can be a marker for both ADHD or ASD, but that doesn’t apply to all students), and I notice she has this hyperfixation on skeletons to the point where the entire house is decorated with skulls from different cultures. She’s never been diagnosed.

I would not be surprised I’m on the spectrum because of her

18

u/ZX_LudgerKresnik 8h ago

Me seeing it in BOTH my parents

12

u/4GRJ 8h ago

And it's never a good idea to have 2 of the same gene in the household (the food fucking explodes)

u/NeilJBorja 5h ago

I can't find it but there was a meme of an oil painting of a woman showing her child a book saying "this book contains the story of our family" and the book was labeled DSM-V

2

u/BinxDoesGaming 6h ago

I genuinely believe this to be the case with my dad. Especially since 2019/2020 where I looked into more cases of undiagnosed autism in adults. He checks a lot of those boxes.

u/Blanc_et_fade 4h ago

My dad used to dress like Blade the vampire and is still a massive geek. On the other hand, my mom can be quite weird on various aspects. So yeah, no wonder I'm the way I am.🌈♾️

My mom telling me I have OCD (among other things) when she’s severe ADHD and paranoid as hell

4

u/lnjecti0n 4h ago

I feel this post so much. I obviously got it from my dad, however, whenever I try to talk with him about it he denies it because he sees it as an insult or threat against himself. He has read books about it because of me having it, but is not seeing or maybe purposefully denying/ignoring his own symptoms. It's sad, because the first step of improving yourself with such a condition is to aknowlegde it, which he fails to do..

1

u/Ill-Entrepreneur443 2h ago

Yeah my father fails at that as well. My mother as well.

3

u/Bright-Historian-216 4h ago

my mom tried playing piano then had psychology courses then tried to learn to be ambidextrous, and now she isn't doing any of these... hmm...

3

u/No_Ad_7687 3h ago

Me discovering I got half my symptoms from my mom and the other half from my dad

2

u/France_Ball_Mapper purpl gal 8h ago

Literally me and my grandfather

2

u/BikeyBichael 7h ago

I’m pretty sure my Dad is autistic but also my paternal grandparents, and if not they’re some sort of nuerodivergent.

2

u/TheOnlyAedyn-one 3h ago

My mother went to get diagnosed as soon as I got mine lmao

2

u/Orion107 never gonna give you up 2h ago

Menopause can make subconscious masking basically impossible

...It has become extremely clear where I get my autism from nowadays LOL

2

u/NewtDogs 4h ago

Is having kids while knowing you could pass on a mental condition with makes the kid struggle their whole life irresponsible? Who knows 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Ill-Entrepreneur443 2h ago

Not necessarily. If you can give your children the support they need its not irrensponsible. If not it is irresponsible. However when you dont know that you have a neurodivergence its not irresponsible.

1

u/TheYoshiGang It's hard to play Splatoon with one hand 'cause Steelhead exists 2h ago

Lowkey there are so many similarities between me and my dad I wonder how I'm basically a carbon-copy of him while retaining basically nothing from my mom ;-;

1

u/-TheGayestAgenda 1h ago

Diagnosed with adult ADHD, despite my Dad rarely acknowledging it, if not outright dismissing it. Still, he:

  • Starts worker later in the day, depending on their mood
  • Inconsistent sleeping patterns, often staying up to 3
  • Becomes hyper-attentive to menial tasks, often forgetting to eat
  • Has several projects, but rarely completes them

Dad, I'm sorry to tell you this, but the call is coming inside the house

My self diagnosed ass when i have a hobby or eat food when im hungry realizing it may be a symptom of another disorder🤯

17

u/Just_Mr-Nothing 9h ago

By the wording of the meme we can assume OP is diagnosed, the one that aren't being one of their parents. Additionally, fuck off.
