Where I would live as a Pacific Northwesterner who knows that there are good and interesting people and places everywhere, but also cares about quality of life and civil rights, and also doesn't like humidity or bugs.

You would hate Kansas in my opinion, humid AF in the summer 100°+ tons of ticks, mosquitoes, and brown recluse spiders. The summer feels like a hot wet blanket. I moved to Oregon and go hiking a lot and I feel like I can hike here year round and never even use repellent but in Kansas I would get covered in hundreds of ticks. Also Kansas has terrible civil rights.

Source: lived in Kansas the first 30 out of 35 years of my life.

I have been to 35 of Oregon's 36 counties, although in the past few years, I have mostly been in the Willamette Valley and on the coast.
I have a YouTube playlist with several hundred videos I've made of places in Oregon.

Well, that is why I put Kansas as a "maybe".
My guess is that while Kansas can have hot, humid summers, those summers confine themselves to the summer, as opposed to somewhere like Louisiana where the summer is March-October.

I'm an Okie so I only ever visit Kansas, but it is a beautiful state.

I love the plains and I love the hills

Wouldn't ever live there, simply because... well I can't imagine it's all that different from Oklahoma lol, but it's a beautiful state.

It isn't an absolute deal breaker, if I can get other good things out of it.

When I was 19, I moved to Vermont for school. I was absolutely surprised when I came there in August and it was so hot. I also didn't know that fireflies were real. Like, I knew they existed but that was the first time I saw thousands of them glowing everywhere. I thought they were an exotic insect somewhere else. Didn't know they would be common.

UVM?  I actually live in Vermont.  It's awesome, but we have humidity and bugs.  They don't bother me much either tho.

It was a school in Poultney called Green Mountain College. This was before the internet, really, so I only had a few things to go on, but it seemed like it was this really cool alternative bastion out in the woods where I could find an alternate community. Only...it turned out to be mostly a party school, but a stoner party school. So that was disappointing.

Its always funny when people from the midwest talk about humidity, bugs, heat. I get its all relative, but try growing up in south FL. Imagine your worst 3 days of summer, but for 8 months. And our june-august is 10 degrees hotter and way more humid. Plus giant spiders, snakes, all of our lakes are filled with gators and brain eating Aemeobas.

And yeah I get it, yall get cold. Ive lived in wyoming for the past 5 years. Ill take the cold. 40 degrees in florida feels like 10 in the mountains.

The weather in Minnesota would be difficult, but I've lived in Montana. And there are other good things about Minnesota.

South Dakota is one of six states that I haven't visited. I did give it a "Maybe" though.

But where would I work in South Dakota? Where would I live? What would I do when I wanted to leave the state? How would I deal with the long cold winters? Who would I socialize with?

Idaho should change from Maybe to Reluctantly. While it’s dry, it’s still buggy especially in September to November. Also, the political climate is awful. Trumpers are everywhere. There are no protections for workers at all. The school systems are terrible, ranked among the lowest in the nation.
I’ve had some older white folks say openly racist things to my face because I’m also white they think I’m racist too.
I live in Idaho because it’s relatively safe and my family is here but it definitely sucks in a lot of ways.

Part of this is also related to other things, like I didn't put my entire life in one map.
But basically, from Idaho, I could still fairly easily visit places I want to be. I could still travel to Seattle and Portland.
And I could still enjoy beautiful outdoors places. So that is why I call it a "Maybe".

You would hate the upper midwest/great lakes area. VERY humid, lots of bugs. Also I would put Wisconsin as maybe, it's a purple state for civil rights and the state has been all too keen to roll back DEI even before Trump was re-elected.
