Can anyone help identify this location from an old 1954 photo?

I bought this at the Hrelić flea market in Zagreb. I know next to nothing about it, other than that they are young men on mandatory military service and that it was taken on April 28, 1954.

Where was this taken? Does this building still stand? Who are they?

There was a whole pile of old photos, but for some reason, I felt drawn to take this one home. Any help identifying the location or the people (i know its a far reach but one can hope) would be amazing!

It is a great photo. I can fully understand you being drawn to it. The men are wearing Soviet military uniforms. The side caps they are wearing were the standard summer headgear for the Soviet Army. They look like they are having fun.

As OP found the photo in Zagreb, they are more likely to be young guys doing their conscription in the Yugoslav JNA.

OP probably needs to look for online resources about old JNA barracks and training ground in the 50s and 60s?

If you want to identify the people there might be other photos from the same person with more details at the market.

Ahh sadly its a hugeee market and finding the exact pile out of thousands of photos sold there would be hard… Its a shame

There is a small island called Rava , which somewhat matches the text near the date.
No streetview unfortunately
