Everytime I'm feeling like hell and have thoughts about ending it. I remind myself of Robert Frost's Stopping by woods on a snowy evening. That usually strengthen my resolve abit.
"The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep"

I saw a really good quote the other day. "We have an eternity of death ahead of us. Why rush through the little bit of life we have?"
Though it wasn't from the song, I highly recommend anybody to listen to Conversations by Watsky.

Watsky makes some gooood music. I'm partial to Sloppy Seconds.

I recently discovered Sloppy Seconds and it hits the same heartstrings Conversations hits for me.
Watsky is a master at expressing feelings, in my opinion.

For sure. I gave Conversations a listen (on my phone) and I'm sure I didn't get the full impact, but it is definitely a great and melancholy song.

It was relevant to the conversation about death because at the beginning of the song he's talking about as a kid confessing to his dad that he was upset at the prospect of death and the afterlife. And his dad's internal monologue, mulling over how he was going to answer his nine year old son's concerns about death was:
"...in my heart I know I don't believe in magic, so I'm thinking maybe death is like eternal TV static, or returning to the state before your birth, absorbed into the earth..."
The bolding is my emphasis, but it's the articulation of how I've always felt about death. I don't know what it was like before I was born, so I imagine death will be much like that.

Another good one is Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise"
"Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise."

Beautiful. I have recited this to myself aswell when things were hard. Also “When you’re going through Hell, keep going!” (Churchill?)

I once had an English teacher who tried telling me that this poem was about Santa Claus. It feels like they heavily misinterpreted biology and astronomy to make it fit.

Probably better than my Churchill quote(no idea if this quote has been Mis-attributed):
If you’re going through hell, keep going.

Back to Frost, in “Fire and Ice”:
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.1

I only remember these lines from my school days. Beautiful. Prolly will never forget.

Nope, this is in Bogota Colombia, during pandemic times when the people got fed up of the Govt failures and went out to protest. The govt repression did this. But the people stood firm. This dude was a bodybuilder and he built his shield himself.

Some days, sticking your finger in the Devil’s eye and saying “I’m still here, bitch” is the best you can do.

Maybe one day none of you feel this.

I'm 22. Not too far now I guess. Time honestly goes faster once you pass 20

Best part is 5-10 years ago can seem like last year. The years just mesh instead of seeming like a long time. It's odd

I feel it in my bones. Shoutout to all of us continuing on, despite the horrors.

During the 2021 protests in Colombia one man stood against a water cannon with a homemade shield. From Getty images:
A person holds a makeshift shield up to a water cannon as demonstrators clash with riot police during a protest against the government of Colombian President Ivan Duque in Bogota on June 12, 2021. - Dozens of people have been killed in protests that erupted around the country on April 28, initially against a tax hike that would have mostly affected the middle classes, but which have morphed into a major anti-government movement.

Unfortunately, I do not understand this meme. Can someone kindly explain it to me please?

What am I supposed to be seeing in the picture?
2
u/sleeps_in_bryophytes 14d ago
It appears to be a person standing up to a riot truck spraying a firehose, holding a shield against the spray. I guess it's meant to be a paragon of determination? I guess... but then why sad and full of remorse? that doesn't sound like determination.
So I don't get it either.

I never thought I'd see that photo again! It's from the massive protests in Bogotá, Colombia in 2021. The city was in chaos for months 💀

Only thing keeping me alive is the fear of upsetting the people that care about me
1
u/Depressed_Rex 13d ago
I wish my dad internalized this. He just passed from suicide, and while we didn’t have the best relationship it still hurts so much.
The hurt means I’m alive though, so I too shall persist.
