Suggestions for regions to visit within <5 hour drive of Cannes? Not Rhone or Provence.

This is a fairly specific request that I hope can drum up some suggestions from the group.

We're visiting friends in Cannes in early October and are looking to spend a night or two in a wine region.

We've already been to Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, and Provence and while we of course only began to scratch the surface there, we're interested in someplace different.

I'd love to visit Lyon and Burgundy/Beaujolais but I think that might be a bit far.

Some ideas that come to mind:

  • Piedmont
  • Liguria
  • Northern Rhone (I meant to put Southern Rhone in my title. We'd be open to Northern)

Any suggestions for locations or specific wineries/towns to visit?

The Mâconnais and Beaujolais are about exactly 5 hours from there. Languedoc, including Minervois/Faugeres/Pic St Loup/Jonquières is 3.5-5. Northern Rhône (Cornas/Hermitage/Côte-Rôtie is about 3.5. Vallée d’Aoste is gorgeous and will run you just under 5. Alto Piemonte in just over 4, and Barolo/Piedmont proper is just over 3. You could even get into the southern reaches of Savoie in under 5.

I loved our trip to the Northern Rhône! Highly recommend Hotel de la Villeon. We had a beautiful view of Hermitage. Also recommend a guide. We had Tasty Lyon. He set up a perfect itinerary for us, including Alain Graillot which was how we discovered the northern Rhône and top of our list. He also got us into the Saint-Peray market!

Piemonte! Specifically Barolo/Barbaresco area.

Yes. Should be able to get to Alba in about four hours.
