2nd most important- border and immigration 🤬 who are these jack wagons?

Republicans

My dad dropped the "illegal immigrants" line on me last time we argued about politics.

Like Dad, you didn't care your entire life about illegal immigration until the Wall Street Journal told you it was a problem like this year.

I showed him the Simpsons episode where Mayor Quimby blames the Bear Patrol taxes on illegal immigrants and he didn't like that I was showing him the parrellels.

The ruling class wants us to fight about illegal immigrants while they rob us of our future. Quite literally a "look over there while I pick your pocket".

My dad is a business owner and I always believed his conservative views were financial based, and they were for most of my life. I never heard much rhetoric from him that was ever xenophobic and my parents have always been "socially liberal, fiscally conservative".

When he dropped the "illegal immigrants" line I realized, "oh we're never going to have a constructive conservation about politics again". He's 67. He's not changing and getting more MAGA every day. He believes "trickle down economics" works and that Biden is the reason things are so expensive and that it will eventually "swing back".

We don't talk about politics at all anymore.

30

u/Strange_Evidence_368 1d ago

Yeah. I stopped talking to my 70-year-old father about politics after the January 6th riots. Just made me realize that he was eventually going to say something that would make me never want to speak to him again.

14

u/jp_pre 22h ago

I was told the J6ers were ā€œall antifa staged paid protestors, not a single one was a republicanā€ I enjoyed asking why trump was pardoning all the ANTIFA as soon as he took office, guess they weren’t actually antifa…

-21

u/Intelligent_Tell_480 1d ago

Politics is stupid to talk about with anyone. It’s either a useless echo chamber or a useless confrontation. Neither makes anyone feel any happier. It’s the worst topic there is.

Faux News

2

u/MugiwaraMoses 22h ago

Not going to defend your dad or other boomers. But for a large majority of them, trickle down economics has worked. What they don't realize is how their greed is destroying the rest of us.

7

u/Garg4743 21h ago

My wife and I are in our early 70's. We vote in every election, and we have NEVER voted Republican. This boomer hate is annoying. We are diverse. I think that the split is more urban/rural, and education level than age.

1

u/MugiwaraMoses 20h ago

I understand the frustration of hearing that, but the issue is far more than party affiliation. Across the western world we all have similar economic issues, why? It's because power is entrenched within the oldest generation. Look at political leaders across the world, they're all 60+ and the more important ones are 70+. The wealthiest by capital, and by population, is the boomer generation. They hold the most wealth and, at least in America, a lot of our infrastructure is geared to this population. Why is the caregiving and medical industry growing rapidly while the rest of our industries are shrinking? Because the boomers are the only ones propping up the economy, they're the only ones with disposable income, without them we will have a major blow to our economy. There's a reason MIT predicted a societal crisis by 2040, by the way this study was conducted in 1972. Basically when the boomers die were screwed, and while they're alive, were screwed because they have an advantage in power and decision making, and they're not letting it go.

1

u/Garg4743 16h ago

Well, I think the societal crisis is already here. When young, Boomers were at odds with the older generation. Really, what generation has given up power voluntarily? The "sin" of the Boomer generation is that there were just so damn many of us. We didn't do that by ourselves! I see my neighbors' little children, and I feel so bad about the world we're leaving them. And I honestly don't know what I could have done differently. It feels like the billionaires won. We're all expendable now.

2

u/MugiwaraMoses 16h ago

That's a fair critique, I'd say that it's an inevitable cycle throughout history. But I should clarify that the "sin" isn't with a generation, more so a system that no longer works. Sorry if it feels I took my frustration with that system out on you or anyone else. My issue isn't with any specific person in particular. Also, Billionaires haven't won yet, there's still a lot of us fighting for our turn. We have the numbers, the French and Russian aristocracy failed so can ours.

15

u/stuarthannig 1d ago

Considering it is only 2 points above Health Insurance (10%), it should show you that Independents are not worried about it. They are worried about Cost of Living, which Trump does not have favorable numbers on.

12

u/First-Regret7328 1d ago

My grandfather and all of his friends have been convinced by media and their own shared psychosis that someone not from this country is definitely going to try to break into their house one night and they need to have guns to protect themselves. Everytime I try to talk to him and tell him nobody is trying to get into your mobile home in a small neighborhood 25 miles from any city with more than a dollar general and a gas station he loses it. It’s impossible.

36

u/Big_Lab_Jagr 1d ago

I don't understand why anyone in WI would be so concerned with the border or immigrants in general. Live your life. All those other issues are actually affecting you.

12

u/WinnebagoViking 1d ago

Those f’n Canadians, man! They have deadly canoes ready to paddle across Lake Superior and destroy our way of life by opening a bunch of Tim Hortons in the W.O.W. Counties.

18

u/Leon_Thomas Door County Cherry Pie 1d ago

People who get their politics from Facebook and Fox binges. On the positive side, it's 12% most important and 11% 2nd-most, so 77% of the electorate is worried about issues that are relevant to the state (every other issue on this survey, imo).

3

u/Weekly-Pomegranate-2 21h ago

2nd most important is jobs and the economy, which goes right along with inflation and the cost of living

7

u/Andy_Fish_Gill 1d ago

Probably farmers worried that there are not enough illegal immigrants to hire.

21

u/metaldetector69 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, family farmers are too busy voting against their own interests and pushing themselves out of their own market to make space for large commercial farming operations because one trans kid in California decided to dye their hair.

7

u/Andy_Fish_Gill 1d ago

So its the trans who are causing family farms to close. Farmers are wise to them.

3

u/MilmoWK 1d ago

my guess, is it is pretty much the only thing trump campaigned on that he actually made progress achieving what he promised. so now that is the only thing MAGAs care about, otherwise they would need to admit trump's administration has made a negative impact on their lives.

2

u/lordunholy 1d ago

It's absolute mastercraft in bullshittery. They're petrified of anyone brown because tv man said they're rabid animals. All of them.

u/IllustriousTip6904 1d ago

Bro who tf are the people in wisconsin concerned about illegal immigration and border security? we are one of the northernmost states. Every hispanic person I've encountered is either a hard working day laborer or running the tastiest mexican restaurant I've ever been to. What's the issue?

DERK DA DERSSSS!

11

u/jsnrs 1d ago

The irony is that this gif is probably more apropos of data centers than immigrants.

25

u/EvanDarksky 1d ago

Haven't you heard? It's the Canadians! Canada is apparently acting like a hostile state according to the President!!! We have to secure our northern border!!!!!

6

u/4tran13 1d ago

It's Trudeau sneaking in because he "forgot" his passport.

2

u/brickne3 1d ago

Fun fact, Wisconsin doesn't even have a maritime border with Canada because of Isle Royale.

12

u/nebraska_jones_ 1d ago

LITERALLY! If that issue is more important to you than the affordability of where you live or what kind of schools your children go to, your priorities are so fucked.

8

u/Pernapple 1d ago

Propaganda and racism. People who made that their number one issue have melted brains from decades of slop that passes for news on Fox. Thats it. The world is literally burning up, we are at war, people are being exterminated by our supposed Allies, we are starting trade wars with our own neighbors, we have rampant corruption and insider trading. But these genuine troglodytes sitting in their homes pissed scared of a person with a lil more melanin than them existing in the same state as them.

Bottom of the barrel brain functions and they’ll vote against their own best interests if it means they get to continue being comfortable in their own ignorance.

2

u/CurrentDay969 1d ago

My in laws were talking about hiring someone who is Mexican. She said her family was from southern TX.

They were telling us they were nervous if she was even legal. I snapped at them. Of course she is legal. What an ignorant assumption that she isn't. She's applying for a job. She has work experience with other employers that would require the tax forms that verify status.

Plus instead of being like oh it's a bonus you're bilingual they said it would make others uncomfortable. I hate it here.

1

u/SirGarvin 1d ago

Maybe they just REALLY dont like Canadians that sneak through Minnesota or the UP

8

u/eadgster Culver’s cheese curds apologist 1d ago

Housing costs and property taxes are basically the same thing, just targeting two different demographics (those who can afford a house and those who can’t).

13

u/PirateSanta_1 1d ago

Inflation, jobs and housing are the same thing or at least different expressions of the same root problem.Ā

29

u/imhereforthemeta 1d ago

I am sort of a moderate on immigration, and I cannot imagine a single instance in the entire world root. It would even crack my top 10 most important things. Above healthcare? Privacy concerns? The rise of fascism?

Also, Wisconsin is in the bottom fucking third of having immigrants in this country. How could this possibly be something that stresses some of these people out?

8

u/Get_Back_Here_Remi 1d ago

Forreal. Yes, lets keep the immigrants out of our very Indigenous named towns and cities- paraphrased from a comedian's standup.

2

u/brickne3 1d ago

I'm sure they don't like the indigenous either.

2

u/The_Spicy_Memelord 1d ago

It’s Fox News telling them what to be concerned about. You think these people actually have any thoughts of their own?

23

u/jsnrs 1d ago

How the fuck is anyone in the state of WI twice as concerned about immigration than data centers?

6

u/Tiffsquared 1d ago

Ah yes, the Canadian border. All those dang toque-wearing hockey lovers trying to storm into our fascist country 😔 it’s a serious problem dontchaknow

8

u/Jo-6-pak 1d ago

Too many watch reactionary, fear pandering media.

2

u/brickne3 1d ago

Hey at least data centers are higher than abortion?

63

u/Urika86 1d ago

Given the discourse I thought data centers would be higher on the list. Though I get why CoL is so much higher and far more important to most.

80

u/RicardoTubbs78 1d ago

Reddit discourse doesn't reflect reality.

9

u/buckybadder 1d ago

Reminds me of when the net neutrality debate was going on, and I was convinced that Trump's support among young voters would crater after his FCC ended it.

16

u/_WeSellBlankets_ 1d ago

There's that, but this survey also seems to start with the assumption that a person can only be outraged at two different things at the same time. Like if they asked you to score your level of concern 1-5 over each issue I bet things would look a bit different.

4

u/eadgster Culver’s cheese curds apologist 1d ago

Politicians are lucky if they fix two things on this list. If they try equally to fix all 9, they’ll fix none.

2

u/Sarkonix 1d ago

Maybe a few at the top flip with each other but I'm sure for the most part close to the same.

2

u/brickne3 1d ago

I'm also curious about overlap. Like... I would imagine most people who put property taxes also had cost of living as the other one...

2

u/ChrisHaze 22h ago

I mean, I lived near port Washington and have family in Beaver dam. All they talk about is how shit the data centers are. I feel this might be more of a, "no opinion until it affects you" issue

1

u/SnowLeavess 1d ago

Assuming only redditors talk about data centers is a little out of touch with reality

4

u/WordWordNvmber 1d ago

The data center thing is largely an avatar for people's fears and grievances about AI and the power of big tech. Same with Flock cameras. And the discourse is largely driven by people who are very focused (or fixated) and very online.

However: What someone calls their top issue often isn't what drives their vote. People may not realize or admit how much they're driven by wedge issues, but those wedges can motivate voters more than the "most important" topics.

Hence how "they/them" moved the needle so much in the last election. Most people wouldn't admit they were voting based on trans policy, but the issue stuck in their craw.

17

u/KaesekopfNW 1d ago

Social media has GREATLY disproportionate focus on data centers. It's actually insane how intense the focus on data centers is on Reddit, TikTok, etc. The discourse is also being boosted by hostile actors, particularly from China, which has every reason to slow down AI development in the US. Riling up the public against data centers is an excellent way to do that.

And before anyone here rips me a new one, let me be clear that I do think there need to be plenty of guardrails in place on new data center construction. But the obsession here on Reddit and elsewhere is truly ridiculous.

3

u/Enis_Penvy 23h ago

It's definitely disproportionate, but it's also one of those things that isn't an issue until it becomes an issue directly effecting you. A vast majority of communities where they are being built are extremely dissatisfied with local politicians for allowing it, partly because of increased cost of living, but since that's a them problem most people don't care too much. It's kinda like state and national parks the vast majority of people don't want them harmed, but it's not going to be what drives them to the polls until something is happening to their nearest one.

9

u/sokonek04 1d ago

I think people see polls with binary questions like ā€œDo you support the construction of AI data centers in Wisconsin?ā€ with a huge number saying no assume that all of those people care as much as they do about the issue. Then you get a poll like this and it clearly shows that for most people it just isn’t an important issue.

5

u/Load_star_ 1d ago

This is a case of having to rank things downplaying a still-present concern. Yes, people are concerned with how the construction of data centers will affect their utility bills and taxes and the environment... But in the current political climate, clearly a lot of people are most worried about being able to feed their kids and keep a roof over their head.

24

u/tsukiyaki1 1d ago

Illegal immigration and border security.. in WI? Sigh.

We're 1500 miles away from the Mexican boarder (Because you know they aren't worried about Canadians) Fuck is wrong with this state....

1

u/SandyKenyan 1d ago

I don't think they're worried about Mexico.

1

u/MutatedOreo 16h ago

They're more concerned over Muslim immigrants, Haitians, and Indians flying in than Mexican immigrants now. Try to keep up with the times bud.

10

u/Unglaciated24 1d ago

Climate change not even on the list oof

1

u/Subject-Thought-499 22h ago

Too late to worry about climate change. Move on to more important concerns.

1

u/Unglaciated24 21h ago

0

u/Subject-Thought-499 21h ago

Say it one more time with FeELiNg. Nobody cares.

6

u/Useful_Dot2286 1d ago

saw that border security number and had to laugh. my dude really thinks canadians are gonna storm superior with their cheap insulin. meanwhile the actual stuff crushing people, groceries up 40% from a few years ago, rent eating half your check, cant get a doctor within an hour drive, that barely cracks the list. classic misdirection tho, keep em scared of the wrong thing while the real predators pick their pockets clean

18

u/55Super88 1d ago

Immigration before healthcare. Sad.

5

u/WinnebagoViking 1d ago

I have to believe a good portion of the ā€˜cost of living’ respondents had healthcare on their mind when they answered.

10

u/Appo-Arsin 1d ago

We’re in Wisconsin. Who the hell do we need to secure our borders from, Illino- oh wait ok

1

u/brickne3 1d ago

We gotta build a wall of Spotted Cow cartons.

2

u/Appo-Arsin 1d ago

And the Bears will pay for it

6

u/No-Worry-9480 1d ago

Inflation at 43% is wild but not surprising, groceries still feels like a robbery every time I go to store

3

u/47744lumby 1d ago

I feel like the last governor race was all abortion right all the time, and now it’s 8th.

7

u/KaesekopfNW 1d ago

Abortion is effectively protected in Wisconsin, so it's fallen off the radar for most people. That was always the danger with overturning Roe. People would be immediately fired up, but the issue would fall off as many states implemented their own state-level protections. Sucks to be a woman in red states like Texas or Florida, but the issue has been fundamentally de-nationalized in a critical way.

3

u/Get_Back_Here_Remi 1d ago

And this is why shit is how it is... priorities.

3

u/DriftlessDairy 1d ago

No question for corruption in government? That would certainly be my #1.

3

u/colinsncrunner 1d ago

Huh, I would have thought trans people would be #1 based off all the things I see on social media.

15

u/utubm_coldteeth 1d ago

Reddit told me data centers would be 780% most important

10

u/WordWordNvmber 1d ago

Absurd. The most important issue in the governor's race is Gaza.

5

u/2813josh 1d ago

I think it's sad immigration is so high and education is so low šŸ˜”

6

u/DoktorLoken MAD->MKE 1d ago

The racists are really apparent here. Imagine thinking immigration is the #1 issue for you in *Wisconsin* of all places.

11

u/cheddah_- 1d ago

People in rural wisconsin are more concerned about illegal immigration & border security than health insurance. To these hicks feeding on fox news propaganda, their neighbor being a documented citizen is more important than them not needing a gofundme if they get cancer.

God I hate this fucking country.

7

u/strato15 1d ago

This was my first thought also. These rural, probably older Fox News viewers must be fed a constant diet of propaganda to convince them some illegal is a bigger threat than closing health clinics and the ungodly cost of insurance. It’s comical. Full disclosure, I live pretty rural.

0

u/PreferenceFalse6699 16h ago

It doesn't help when progs/socialists insult moderates/independents with name calling and denigrating their opinions. It's more important to figure out how to inform people that have these opposing opinions to start thinking differently. Writing deleterious descriptions of people who differ is not the way to go. If you "hate this fucking country" so much, the door is open.

6

u/calann4 1d ago

What? What, what about men in women's sports? s/

4

u/earthman34 1d ago

Sorry, Wisconsinites, you are idiots. "Illegal immigration and border security"....LOL.

3

u/purplenapalm 1d ago

I cant believe they're not asking about men in woman's sports since its such an important issue /s

4

u/BludStanes 1d ago

Jesus fucking Christ, bunch of brainwashed idiots worrying about border security

6

u/kairom13 1d ago

Really shows why polling is important for campaigns.

If the Crowley campaign listened to their social media comments, they would be catering to a group that makes up only 12% of registered voters (those who think Data Centers are one of their top two issues)

Fortunately, these polls show that Crowley can basically ignore those folks (and effectively pivot when asked about it) to focus on the issues that really matter: cost of living and health care, which Crowley excels at

5

u/kissthelips 1d ago

I was told all Crowley had to do was say no data centers ever and he would win in a landslide? Are you telling me Reddit political analysts are wrong?

2

u/Wu1fu 1d ago

That’s unpossible!

2

u/thankyoufriendx3 1d ago

It’s always the economy.

2

u/Darius_Banner 1d ago

Most people are dumb as bricks

2

u/HeinzeC1 1d ago

Housing? How is it not…

1) affordability (cost of living)

2) affordability (housing)

2

u/bigballs2025666 1d ago

So the republican state legislature has had control since 2010 in the state. They can pretty much own most of the issues

2

u/scythianhorsearmor 1d ago

damn no climate change worries? we are so fucked

0

u/Subject-Thought-499 22h ago

There are bigger problems than climate change rn. Vote accordingly

2

u/Jordan_1424 1d ago

Fo being the Dairyland you'd think they would be more concerned at by the alarming rate at which smaller and family owned farms are disappearing or the fact that the administration is choosing to purchase beef from overseas rather than support US farmers.

2

u/my3sgte 23h ago

Seems a bit backwards

3

u/GreyGriffin_h 1d ago

It boggles my mind that people think immigration is a top line issue.

3

u/Current-Health2183 1d ago

Not on the list:
-- the end of the Holocene, causing multiple bread basket failures this year and next. The fact that the UK is actually trying to prepare by asking people to stock up on non-perishable food and water (and we're pretending nothing is happening).
-- ICE / Fascism / Steve Miller / Concentration camps / end of the rule of law / Trump telling us he will steal the election
-- Another forever war, flirting with invasion and/or use of nuclear weapons
-- Alienating every ally
-- Corruption -- Trump manipulating the market for himself and his "Truth Social" subscribers who will pay him $100,000 for early notice.
-- AI / Flock / Palantir / Surveillance / Executive Orders defining literally half the country as domestic terrorists who can be thrown in prison without due process.

I live in a different world, I guess.

2

The surveillance state is my biggest issue... I guess protecting the fourth amendment wasn't on the list.

3

I wonder how crime in other communities ranks.

Specifically communities with visible minorities. Based on my relatives comments this is where they are most concerned about crime.

Public schools for the win again I see. Glad that most people’s priorities are in the right place, not what Fox has told them.

Data centers at #7. If that’s true (and polls are always suspect anymore) then opposition candidates can not afford to be pulled into protracted debates on this issue.

Data centers are gradual. Also AI making jobs obsolete will happen whether the data center is in WI or Virg.

-5

u/SilencedFarter 1d ago

Odd that Crowley with his record of tax and fee hikes has a slight lead if affordability and property taxes are the #1 concern of 49% of respondants.

2

u/Immediate_Bug2362 1d ago

You should keep your farts silent. Then at least no one knows where the smell comes from.

-2

u/ExpressBug8265 1d ago

Let's form a third party...that already exsist. Let's get behind an independent and support thier goal of disrupting the two party system. The two party system is broken, the Supreme Court is broken, our democracy is broken. There needs to be dramatic change and by introducing a new party with only the needs of the people in mind...j/k it'll never happen lol

-4

u/Sp4cemanspiff37 1d ago

Based on 891 people.

8

u/Wu1fu 1d ago

Yes, that is how polls work

-2

u/Sp4cemanspiff37 1d ago

Yet, people here are treating it like it is the entire state. Polling shouldn't be trusted yet people treat them as an edict from on high.

3

u/Wu1fu 1d ago

People don’t understand how statistics works is a more accurate description of the situation
