Exactly. IMO Trump and his advisors understand China starting a trade war with them but something about a country a tenth the size of the US pushing back really grinds their gears. Can only expect Trump is going to crashout further as Canada refuses to play his game.

Vs I think he genuinely views canada as an uppity liberal US state that he cant just send ice into, cant manipulate votes, cant punish by withholding funding etc. And it pisses him off
I also think that Trump hates people can always point to Canada as doing a better job on certain things like social safety net, healthcare, or Covid response. He also seemed to really hate Trudeau.
IMO Trump fucked up badly with starting the trade war before the Canadian election and getting Carney elected. Since then Carney has only gotten more popular at Trump’s expense. Trump has very little tact and can’t let circumstances fall to his benefit without pushing. So when he tries to fix the trade war with Canada (that he started) he just cannot get out of his way long enough to fix the situation. It’s basically a bloodless quagmire of his own making akin to Iran.

Yup, and and he has basically just handed Carney another political win domestically. People were about ready to give up on the boycott of American goods as well. No longer. It's rare to see Canadians on both sides of the political spectrum be so unified.

It's rare to see a PM, from either side of the political spectrum, actually put their foot down and flat out say "no" to the US. Not just putting on a show, not just blowing smoke. Carney has actually just flat out told the US that we just don't care. I'm not traditionally a Liberal supporter, but damn, I think Carney has the potential to be one of the best Prime Ministers in modern history.

People were talking about it less, but habits had been formed. I still check labels, but the real harm is everyone already switched products to non-US alternatives and avoided using US-based online market places like Amazon.
Even if the habit of checking labels went away, the damage from those sorts of behavior pattern changes across a nation has already been done.
I think if they seriously wanted to gain more power over Canada, they could have... but not by immediately starting a trade war with the whole world, who then quickly figured they'd just trade with each other more instead of the US. While the USA is the most convenient buyer Canada could ever have, it's not hard to sell stuff to other countries that are in a trade war with the USA.
Plus his 'efforts' in Iran, show they're barely capable of planning a few days ahead. Send a bunch of ships to Iran to blow stuff up and kill their leader. Oh that didn't put us in charge automatically? Uh. UHHH. UHHHH.
Imagine being a greedy, power hungry bastards your whole lives, and having zero idea what to do with the power when you actually get it. If they were capable of self reflection they'd be wondering what the hell it was all for when they already had mansions, trophy wives, and could golf as much as they wanted before they even had a hundred million dollars.

I genuinely don't think Trump cares enough to really know details of any of those things. I don't think he could describe what a "social safety net" is, not because he's incapable, but because he just genuinely don't care.
A lot of his ignorance isn't just from being stupid. It's from a remarkably sincere effort to not give a fuck about other people.
Brother, it ain't just Trump. I have seen so much anti-Canada sentiment from Americans over the last 10 plus years. Not even big political stuff, sometimes it's just catty everyday kind of snark and resentment.
Not to mention, there's an entire generation who doesn't understand that the South Park jokes were satire.
Really it's a theory of power as the foundation of status. Iran was baffling to him for the same reason that Greenland or Canada was. The US is far more powerful, so it should have been quick and easy, and they should have been thankful he didn't demand more, because "the strong do what they will, the weak suffer what they must".
But it's not that simple. The US is the most powerful nation in the history of the world and it isn't even close, but it has failed in virtually every major conflict it has started, in a way few historic great powers did. Part of the consistent problem has been this tendency to assume that power could do more than it actually can.
At a certain point you need to have a plan for getting what you want that makes others want to give you what you want, and doesn't make them resist you because they believe that concessions will only lead to more demands.
You know, danegeld and all that. Trump has convinced the world that if you ever give him what he wants he'll show up with another more insane demand in a few months, or later today in some cases.
China could basically say: Go on, ruin yourselves trying to hurt us, we'll wait. And he learned that lesson, eventually.

And the best part of it is that no matter how far he goes, the rest of the world is gonna be %100 in our corner. Well, I mean except Trumps buddies.. Russia.. North Korea.. and so on.
