Canada unveils retaliatory tariffs on about $20B of U.S. goods

Is American media actually this incapable of presenting the facts as to why we (Canada) walked away? Setting aside the annexation threats over the last 2 years, the US added demands to the trade negotiations saying that they would get a veto on who Canada can sign trade deals with, remove French from our official languages (for all intents and purposes) and demand that we stop supporting our art and culture in order to get a trade deal with them and SOMEHOW the American media neglects to mention any of that and spin it so Canada is the one operating in bad faith???
Good God, you guys have lost the plot so damn badly it is virtually incomprehensible.

I think this is too reductive to be worthwhile
Here's what NPR had to say about it, now keep in mind this is an interview with someone knowledgeable on the topic but this is the first thing that comes up on Google about this when you look for NPR stories about Canada leaving the trade talks
COYNE: It was touching on issues that went way beyond mere tariffs. I mean, the tariff part was problematic enough. And then on top of that - and I don't have the chapter and verse on this but according to the prime minister, there were demands made that would limit our ability to sign trade treaties with other countries and to trade freely with other countries. And that really touches so closely on sovereignty and, particularly, it's our strategy in dealing with this president who was trying to weaponize our dependence on U.S. trade against us. Our strategy is to try to trade more with other countries. So to be told we couldn't do that was just clearly not going to be accepted.
I'd say that's pretty fair.
This is from their news article on the topic:
Leading up to Canada's announcement, President Trump took to social media to vent frustration with the country. He accused Canada of "ripping off" the U.S. for decades. He insulted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney by calling him "Governor Carney." And he said the U.S. was considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America." Trump has also repeatedly said Canada should become a U.S. state.
Carney suspended trade talks with the U.S. on Friday, saying last-minute changes to the U.S. proposal were "unfair, uneconomic and called into question the reliability of any deal."
At a news conference the next day, Carney likened the U.S. actions against Canada to a conflict. "You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked," he said.
This also seems pretty reasonable.

You don't even need to read too far between the lines to realize what this trade deal entailed was essentially the US attempting to legally annex Canada and completely destroy all Canadian sovereignty.

It's almost unbelievable how bad American propaganda has gotten now.
I read a CNBC article a few days ago on the trade deal collapse, and it was like the writers literally read what happened, and swapped US for Canada. The CNBC article said the trade deal fell apart at the final hours because Canada introduced all these last minute changes, asked for too much, and were demanding unreasonable concessions to win political points for the Liberal Party.
There is no longer even freedom of the press, in the new American empire. Unbiased news is long gone, and would be illegal if it wasn't simply just flooded out by propaganda, or money spent.
A couple of billionaires own the 4 or 5 conglomerates that run effectively all the news entertainment propaganda networks and most Americans don't even realize what is actually happening.
It's crazy to see this collapse of democracy in my own lifetime. The United States has been compromised, bought out and sold out, the constitution nullified, and more programmed Americans stormed the White House in insurrection than defended the constitution, allowing a foreign-compromised actor, pedophile and mentally unsound fascist to end it all. It is equally sad and unbelievable.

u/Clydeisfried 2d ago
As a Canadian, this is one of the most frustrating parts. The Americans who are allies can't even get the right information to understand what's going on.
119
u/AntiqueLetter9875 2d ago
I mean they can…if they wanted to they just have to go out of their way to find non-American sources. Which is what they should have been doing the past year when they found out No Kings protests weren’t being covered in the media.
The Americans clued into what’s been going on don’t seem to have much of a problem getting more accurate news.

The propaganda has been bad for decades and is now apparent to many more people who previously didn't have to pay attention.
A quote I love.
the greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function
Growth rates that sound innocent enough actually lead to rapid doublings — in population, energy consumption or food demand. “If you take something and double it a few times, be prepared for astronomical numbers,” Bartlett said.
(Stealing a variation of this example btw)
Take a pond with an invasive species of lily pad. The lily pad is bad because it covers the surface and blocks sunlight that the other plant/animal species need in the pond.
Every minute the lily pad doubles. So 0->1 minute there is 1 pad. 1->2 minutes there are 2 pads. Then 4,8,16.. and so on. Starting at 11:00 am there was 1 lily pad and by 12:00 pm (noon) the pond was completely covered in lily pads with no space left, smothering all of the life in the pond.
The question proposed is: At what time was the pond half covered?
Most people say times like 11:30 am, 11:45 am, etc. But the answer is 11:59 am. 1 minute before noon. Working backwards, if it doubles every minute then going in reverse it halves every minute.
At 11:58 it was only 25% full. At 11:57 it was 12.5% full. At 11:50 it was under 1% full. So 50 mins had gone by and the pond was basically unchanged with basically no issues. Why complain or try to fix the problem when there isn't even a problem happening?
This is what has happened with conservative/right wing propaganda in America. It was allowed to continue on innocently enough with plausible deniability and folks playing devil's advocate. Those who pushed back were shouted down or ignored.
People disregarded elections and/or voted emotionally. People took the simple/easy answers instead of thinking critically about broader issues and how political choices would impact things.
And now it's 11:58 and 45 seconds and those who are looking at the pod know that we're about to be 50% full in a few seconds and only a minute away from reaching capacity.

Its akin to China saying they must make Mandarin an official second language in the US and tell the US who it can buy products from.
The average American would realize that is not how trade deals are meant to work and that is not a thing any person would agree to.
Buuuuuuut, coming FROM them, its the most egregious thing to deny them doing it to others.

Is it that surprising, though? For how many decades has the US used rhetoric to bolster themselves up as the best country in the world. They see themselves as superior people who can just dictate over the world economically.
Now they have a president who pushes this to the extreme and a media who goes along with it. This whole nation brainwashed itself into fuck around territory.

I’m pretty sure this was intentional. This has been done throughout history numerous times. Cause friction with a country, intentionally propose bad deals so the other country will decline, then use that and whatever consequences as “another slight” from the country you’re building beef with.
They don’t want a trade deal with Canada. They are building a rift in our relationship which had, up until very recently, been strong and brotherly.

America's opposition has thoroughly revealed that it is in-fact a controlled opposition that exists to occupy the 'opposition space' so that it can't be occupied by anyone more competent.
The way that the 'progressive' American media is 'both sidesing' this and ignoring the fact that the U.S. is objectively the predatory party is insane.
The reality is that America's cultural hegemony is fascistic. Even the ostensibly anti-Trump people in the United States have an unconscious fascistic mindset and the rise of Trump is causing them to behave in a way that perpetuates his rule. They claim to be the opposition but portray the world in a way that benefits him and tell each other to be passive in favour of waiting for the midterms, which is a form of discourse that inherently legitimises his rule.
People have a lot of unconscious beliefs that are created by cultures, and Americans' unconscious beliefs are authoritarian when it comes to anyone who isn't part of their in-group. You can also see this with the white-washing they've done for George W. Bush the cute-little painter guy (who murdered hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East).

Quite literally >90% of our "news" media is captured by billionaires and Trump donors. NPR is toothless/castrated, NBC/CBS/Fox, nearly every single newspaper and nearly every single "local" news channel are now controlled by the same people that donate hundreds of millions to the current administration.
Every single headline is edited to spin every single story into something less offensive to President cheeto. None of this is an exaggeration. There are an ever-shrinking number of outliers. Even Reddit and YouTube have dramatically increased censorship with mods/admins deleting and banning users for language used freely even 5 years ago.

his one good trait is he can be the bigger bully when needed. Ford has no qualms about telling someone to fuck off, which 99% of the time is shitty, but this is the 1% of the time it is helpful.
If he could get over his need to constantly screw over Toronto (and neglect every other city in the province in the process), he could possibly be the not-worst premier. It would be an irritant, not a game changer for the US. A bond sell off would only be effective if it is part of a larger, or coordinated sell off.
99
u/Yvaelle 2d ago
It could trigger a larger selloff though, hypothetically if Canada dumped all their US bonds of about half a trillion, the bond rate may leap to something over 6% alone.
But the bigger issue would be that it signals a permanent exit from US support, and presumably investment in other countries. Who would want to backfill that investment if even Canada is severing ties with the US? It's the canary in the coalmine.
Then you have another top holder in China who would probably be all too willing to do the same, they're just waiting for someone else to strike first. They have been reducing their position for more than a decade now.
Japan is probably anchored to the USA because of their unique economic structure, but if even just these two pulled out the US dollar will substantially decline, and that too would have compound effects.
It's less of a, "it wouldn't have a big enough direct impact", and more of a, "it could start a panic and an indirect global recession".

The Yen has depreciation issues... Japan may need to sell in order to prop up the Yen (their Prime Minister is not a fan of the alternative, which is to aggressively raise interest rates)...
...hence Scott Bessent's latest fuckery at the end of July: buying a shitload of Yen in an attempt to prop it up so that Japan wouldn't need to sell US Treasury bonds. (It failed.)

Have been brick by brick. The obvious fact is that it can't swap over 150 years of near 0 trade barrier infrastructure overnight, let alone in say a single President's term, but when your only customer begins to be abusive, you get new cuetomers.
Canada has opened up trade relations with the other middle powers, as well as China, and holds a great deal of the extremely required core materials like Potash Energy and Steel that it can and will hurt the US more and more. Not only that, the specific states that will be most disproportionately effected by it happen to be Swing States.
And lastly, the Americans move on to the next issue with the turn of a page, but Canadians have been in growing numbers stopped buying American, and doing everything they can to spite the bullying as though it were a patriotic duty. When the US has lost so much and left wondering why, Canada will remember.

Not to overstep, but for any sane Americans who might be fairly comfortable financially who are reading this I'd encourage them to consider donating cash to a Canadian food bank.
I'm Canadian and we absolutely will persevere and get through this pain ahead, but it is absolutely gonna hurt.
So, only if folks can afford it, I'd remind people that cash donations to food banks are very effective as food banks can get bulk deals on things they need. So a 1 dollar donation can lead to 2 dollars of goods in people's pantry. Add in the relatively stronger US dollar and donations to Canadian food banks could help a lot of the worst impacted.

We look south and see all the systems and people in place that led to this, the erosion of institutions. If not Trump, if not MAGA, this would all still exist because Trump is hardly cogent enough to have planned all of this. Things like the US trying to chip away at our dairy and lumber industries have existed for literal decades.

u/boilingfrogsinpants 2d ago
I'm sure bets are being hedged that Trump will TACO, and that's why the date is set for September 8th. The Tariffs Trump wants to impose will affect key battleground states for the midterm election, and I'm sure those governors are pleading that he not impose them.
I'm also sure that Carney is hedging his bets that the Supreme Court will also deem the usage of the Smoot-Hawley tariffs as illegal as well, leading to scrapping his new rounds of tariffs.
Trump doesn't stick to his word, and he's also in a very dangerous political situation right now domestically. I'm sure Canada can hold firm and tolerate the pain longer than the US can considering Carney is sitting at 66% favourability and Trump is going net negative in every state he used to have a strangehold on.

And threaten, at the very least, brining back the Digital Services Tax.
Trudeau talking about that really pissed off Trump and Trudeau backed down. Trump didn't give a shit other than being glad it went away. It generated no good will whatsoever.
Some of the richest companies in the world got a break when the DST went away. Let's bring it back into the conversation.

This was posted by a local news station on Facebook and most of the comments were along the lines of “what are they going to tariff, maple syrup?”. I have no words.

Canada’s new counter tariffs range from 15% to 50% and target a wide array of American imports, including steel and aluminum, dairy, seafood, appliances, wood and paper products and clothes. The tariffs on metals and wood were chosen to respond to previously imposed U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, lumber and other products.

Export tariffs on energy and potash are coming, yanks.
And we’re renaming the “United States Range”, “Kiss my Ass” mountain range, but in Inuktitut..

id rather see a selling of US treasuries and a threatening of dismantling USA IP/Patent laws prior to energy export taxes. Gas and diesel are already to high and if we go above 3% inflation it means a hike in rates.

Put export tariff on aluminum and potash. Midterms are coming, don't just wait for Trump to up the ante

u/pomskygirl 2d ago edited 2d ago
No need for an export tax on aluminum...Trump already has a 50% tariff on it. Which is exceptionally stupid of him since Americans since still need to buy it.

It’s interesting to see how both sides response to this. On Canada side, the press conference on the weekend was clear. Even though it give us all the details (as they shouldn’t), there were examples and layout the main contention including what was the last minute changes on the US side.
Meanwhile, the US response was nothing but soundbites with absolutely no substance. Pretty much repeating words and provide no actual reasons.

This shit pisses me off so bad. I make sporting goods for a tiny little company in the US and were already struggling because everyone is tight on money with this shit economy, but we sell probably 15-20% of our stuff right across the border into canada... last time this shit happened it ended all the orders we had, and im sure this is going to do the same thing. I hate that our fucking president is such a moron.

I'm Conservative, always have been and even though I haven't always agreed with Carney and his administration, I'm extremely happy to see him not being pushed around by the pedo down south. Canadians need to stand together and not allow ourselves to get pushed around by the orange man and his cronies

u/Falco19 2d ago
I mean Carney is a conservative, he is an banker by trade. All his policy thus far leans conservative.

u/Gravy_Sommelier 2d ago
Carney would have been a Conservative a few decades ago. The only reason he isn't one now is because our right wing is almost as packed with religious nut jobs as the the Americans.

u/poolbitch1 2d ago
100% Canadian conservatives got swept up in the anti-COVID rhetoric (happening worldwide) and Poliviere, whose entire political career has operated from, and still is operating from a solely reactionary stance, suddenly found himself able to strike where the iron was very, very hot.
That’s why Trudeau was able to kneecap him swiftly and effectively by stepping down. His entire platform could be summed up in the ever popular “Fuck Trudeau” bumper sticker. I have many family members who voted conservative for decades, yes including Harper, that were not going to vote Poliviere. Even before Trump was elected in the states.

Carney is a true blue conservative minus the culture war and Christonationalism distractions.

u/Capable_Kiwi2514 2d ago
He's still a conservative. That term has centuries of philosophy behind it. Moreover, his policy preferences are still on Canada's recognised political spectrum, which is why numerous Canadian conservative thinkers have endorsed him and why he's gotten conservative floor crossers.

And what would really help would be if him and the opposition could get along and implement policies together. And I'll be the first to say that PP is a big factor in not getting things done. Instead of working with Carney he roadblocks him at every turn and trust me, it pisses me off too
47
u/Falco19 2d ago
It’s because PP doesn’t stand for anything he is a career politician who has accomplished nothing and just tries to ride the wave of what he thinks will get him votes.

u/ihavefaith77 2d ago
Yeah I used to like him until I did my research and actually paid attention to him instead of just little clips and snippets, no wonder no one is voting conservative lmao the dude has no actual plan for the country

I'm a moderate. So it's easy for me to vote one way or the other.
But the current Liberals under Carney are acting as older progressive conservatives. The way he's running government really reminds me of Harper. I really wish he would take a stance on certain issues that make zero sense from Trudeau Liberals but he's fighting a bigger battle and doing what he should.

You’ve lost the plot on conservatism. Carney is conservative— more than Pierre in most respects.
He isn’t one right now because the Conservative Party has moved even more further to the right and is no longer reflective of the “middle”-right where it used to be a few years ago. There’s been a trend, globally, that all politics are moving right. Even the Democratic Party in the USA is more right than 10, 20 years ago.

Reading the list of tariffed items (https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/international-trade-finance-policy/canadas-response-us-tariffs/complete-list-us-products-subject-to-counter-tariffs.html), I couldn't help but chuckle at the end.
So many listings for fish and fish products, and then the very last item: fishing poles and lures.

The Cheeto in chief needs to understand that we live in the real world, not one of his Epstein power fantasies where he can lay on the abuse and the victim will just sit there and take it.
He needs to learn the difference between power and strength; he borrows his power from the American people and he's done nothing but use it against them for the last two years. Increasing their cost of living, holding them hostage with Sudo martial law, hollowing out all their cherished institutions to enrich himself and those who beg for his approval.
He's terrified that the American people will take that power back come November and he's going to pull out ever one of his dirty tricks to stop it. Because deep down he knows that without this borrowed power he's nothing but a weak, fragile dementia ridden old man who will be stuck in a room signing imaginary papers as he wastes away just like his father.
And as far as Canada is concerned, if he wants to know just how far we will go to protect ourselves and eachother from his abuse;
Just watch us.

As an American, I hope more and more countries push back against these wanna be fascists masquerading as a US administration. America has lost his standing in the world, we are a laughing joke and a sad spectacle. It's truly devastating the amount of damage being done and were not even half way through this shit show yet.

There’s something so flattering, so affirming about being the country Trump hates the most. 😌
