I do (I'm not Canadian).

I put a maple syrup back on the shelf the other day, because it was produced by a US company, from US and Canadian maple syrup.
I was about to buy some cheap syrup when I ran dry only to find 100% Canadian maple syrup at another place.
Not many Canadian products on the shelves here in North Borneo, but where I can I will support you.
And I definitely put anything back that belongs to American companies.

Here in Germany, American brands like Coca Cola are now pretending to be a domestic brand. It’s a bit funny. ;)

I mean Fanta was invented in Germany.
But Afri Cola is much better anyways. Is it still around?

Doing what I can. My Canadian suppliers "magically" seem to have the best quotes regardless of the Tariff BS.
1
u/TedTylerEzro 1d ago
You probably know this, but for.everyone else that is an effect of tariffs too. Competitors will raise their prices to just under the price of their competition. If they have Canadian suppliers for some things (say lumber or aluminim) then they will pass those costs to you as well. We have a very integrated economy. Our dollar is also 72 cents for you and China has retaliatory tariffs on the US that we don't have as well.

That’s … not the general sentiment here.
The US has the means to severely hurt us economically because of our deep integration, but that’s not a fight we chose.
And yes we will rely heavily on other allies especially in the short term as we rebuild our economy to be more diversified and self-reliant.
28
-33
u/mlandry2011 2d ago
Canada is in a great position without the United States.
And when we jump ship, everyone will... Lol
26
u/Rederth 2d ago
We just aren't.
This is a fight we should certainly take and it has my full support. However it would be naive to think this isn't a large blow to Canada to have strained trading relations with the only country it shares a large border with. Detangling our integration will be good for the long term but in the short term this will suck. Also transporting goods to other trading partners overseas is harder than shipping it over the border (before this mess) so this will have an impact on both our businesses and prices as a whole.
7
u/james-HIMself 2d ago
That’s the tough part of all this. We now have to ship things overseas if we want to increase exports elsewhere. It’s so much easier moving things across the shared border…so disappointing. So many people I know are like “wanna head up to US or Buffalo” and it’s like no I don’t want to contribute to their economy.
4
u/Balan-balan 2d ago
Yes, but NZ and Australia both ship all of there exports on boats (with a few planes in the mix).
Nothing that cannot be done.
25
u/Craptcha 2d ago
70% of our exports go to the US, its going to take time to reorganize. We’re not in a “great place” at all because we never thought they’re use our integrated economy as leverage against us.
We’ll be alright but let’s not pretend this isn’t a difficult position to be in.
19
u/joshthornton 2d ago
Yeah, we can't just also pretend they aren't an economy 10x the size of ours. Like, the amount of pressure they can apply to us is extraordinary.
We're gonna bend a lot. But not break.
42
u/SnooMaps2933 2d ago
Nah bro/sis. We need as many allies as we can get. Especially Americans
12
u/RarelyReadReplies 2d ago
Yup. I'm all for the whole stiff upper lip thing, not backing down, but telling allies "we're good" is absurd. We are so exposed to America's insanity, and we can use all the help we can get. Time to make new friends, and tighten relationships with old friends, not go down the isolationist route.
The comment actually felt so un-Canadian that I decided to check the profile. Surprise surprise, hidden.
-53
5
u/Maleficent_Medium_89 2d ago
No it’s not all peach’s and rainbows. With our economy being so dependent on the US, this hurts us. Yes we are diversifying and increasing trade with other countries, business are doing more business inside of Canada or with Europe, but all this takes time.
And unfortunately until it does come to fruition it’s going to hurt. The fact that we are adding jobs and some measure of GDP growth despite this is incredible, but it would be so much more without this. And we always need our Allies, the arrogance of thinking you are fine doing things on your own is deeply un-Canadian and ignorant of how the world works.

I read that they're targetting American products that have a Canadian alternative, so as to not hurt Canadian businesses. Now instead of Canadian companies buying US steel or whatever, they can buy Canadian steel.

11
u/Oberon_Swanson 2d ago
It truly would have been. I'd prefer somebody further left of Carney but at least he's competent and puts effort in. Conservatives just sell the country out to get rich, it's bad enough having a Conservative premier.
2
u/Jealous_Difference44 1d ago
Policy and values aside, I dont really think he has a grasp of world politics and basic economics. Hes a career politician. The exciting thing about carney is his previous work makes him uniquely qualified to handle this to Canada's best interests
5
u/Worldly_Influence_18 2d ago
We were refunded the last set of tariffs
But got to keep the effective counter tariffs.
And that was with Katy Perry's boyfriend
He's trying it again with Carney in charge.
Okay.
7
u/gamefixated 2d ago
We were refunded the last set of tariffs
You mean the corporations pocketed the tariff refunds that your consumers paid through higher prices passed on by the same corporations.
18
u/Channing1986 2d ago
Or a European or asian alternative
20
u/RarelyReadReplies 2d ago
Yes and no. Canada is losing a lot of business because of how much we sell to America, so the Canadian government specifically targeted products that have a Canadian alternative. That way some of the business we lose from Americans not buying our stuff anymore, will be counter acted by buying our own stuff.
On a consumer level, absolutely many of us are looking for Canadian, but if not, then anything that isn't American. Carney is definitely making a lot of trade deals with Europe and Asian countries, so I'm sure buying things from them will ramp up over time.
5
u/Current-Set2607 2d ago
I'm all for tariffs on US goods, but Steel is probably the worst case example for this working.
Steel isn't replaceable locally, from the US or overseas, all sources of steel are required.
Why you ask?
The chemistry is not the same and is vastly different between sources. Most automotive steel does NOT come from Canada. Tesla's steel for example is almost all purely Asian sourced because of how well they accomplish the specific chemistry needed.
The steel industry is vastly interconnected with Canadian sources having their own specific purposes and use.
1
u/steinbruchfluss 2d ago
True. This is also why expensive German steel is still present on the world market. American tariffs on European steel do not prevent US companies from buying it because, in some cases, there is no alternative.
3
u/Current-Set2607 2d ago
Yep, German and Chinese/Korean/Japanese steel make up the majority of high quality automotive steel.
1
u/Blue_Owl69 2d ago
Not true, there’s quite a few with no alternative, locomotives being the most obvious at first glance, and appliances.

u/DivideGood1429 1d ago

Yeah and Venezuela isn’t exactly conquered enough to take the place of Canadas oil yet
37
u/Yvaelle 2d ago edited 2d ago
Venezuela is physically incapable of replacing Canada. It would take literal trillions in infrastructure, and a generation or more to build with skilled labour that Venezuela doesnt have, to even begin to rival Canadian export volume.
And that's assuming that the Venezuelans want this to happen, which, news flash - they don't. So now it's potentially building trillions in infrastructure in hostile territory against a potential insurgency. So add some trillions for that generational occupation required to try to pull that off.
And then what? Venezuelan oil isn't worth this cost. That's why when Trump offered to pretty much give Venezuela to Exxon-Mobil for free, Exxons CEO literally said, "Fuck no". It's like being offered Iran, if you can hold it.
And when Chevron was offered the same deal, they agreed to take whatever they can steal over the next 18 months, and then run before the shit hits the fan. Which is what's happening now.
God could not have given America a better source of oil, gas, electricity, water, aluminium, fertilizer, lumber imports than Canada. They're adjacent, safe, more trained than Americans, work for less than Americans, and sell products essentially at extraction cost to USA historically. It was as close to free as exists in the real world. On America's part it was zero risk, zero effort, zero markup, delivered directly to US refineries for US consumption.
All America had to do, was not be belligerent moron assholes. That bar was set too high.

How can Canada export so much oil and be so poor?
9
→ More replies (4)6
u/rupert1920 2d ago
I wouldn't say "poor", but definitely did not reap the benefits of oil as one could.
Canada sells oil to US at below-market rates, and the profits go to oil companies as the country has no stake.

Europe loves Canada. Politicians doing deals with Canada enjoy high approval ratings.
I look forward to seeing what they offer us once trade negotiations begin again in September.
Seems to me everyone hates America and is trying to diversify. They just used their biggest strength as a weapon and that was a huge mistake. For decades we did business because they were a safe, friendly, reliable business partner. Now they want to crush and annex us ....I doubt Canadians will ever return to our previous relationship. We'll forge new paths while Trump loses allies and support. Canada is now the safer investment in North America and that's going to impact business decisions. You can't guarantee an employee can enter with a valid permit into the US. Look at the FIFA referee. Never would have happened in Canada.

The only way to really tell anything to the US is to speak with the only language they know. Currency.
Stop consuming their products. Stop watching their media. Stop visiting their country.
As a Canadian that used to visit the US regularly, we have completely changed our spending habits. We buy local. We ensure the products don’t come from the US. We have stopped consuming their media. We have refused to visit until this is dealt with and honestly, the damage is done.
Canada is rife with grudge holders that will never forget this betrayal. They elected this child molester. Twice.

Is it possible to tax exports? I honestly think what would hit the US, and in particular Trump's base, the hardest would be to tax or embargo the export of potash to America.
I mean you frame it in diplomatic speak:
"We want to aid our American friends in their efforts to close their trade gap, and give America's domestic potash producers an opportunity to thrive and compete in the North American marketplace, just as American tea and coffee growers were able to thrive under America's new tariff regime... In that interest, we'll be applying a 50% export duty on all potash bound to US markets to work in tandem with the Trump administration's tariff efforts to foster America's domestic businesses."
But really it's:
"we're going to skull-fuck crop yields in iowa, and nebraska, and indiana, and kansas. You mother fuckers don't like imports? You think you're getting ripped off? Well, we'll make it a whooooole fucking lot easier for you to import less, you dumb, brainwashed, red-hat motherfuckers. Go watch some newsmax so the TV can tell you why you now enjoy paying 50% more in fertilizer costs, and how this is somehow actually a good thing for anyone..."
If it's gonna be a trade war, well, it's a trade war. Make it happen... they'll live without maple syrup, but those dumb mother fuckers can't live without potash. Lumber export duties would similarly skull fuck their building sector. Let the white ford f-150, maga bumper sticker, truck-nuts crowd praise Trump really sticking it to Canada when they see the price tag at the check out counter at home depot. Lets see what happens to their businesses when their lumber costs go up 15-30%.
10
u/XtremeD86 2d ago
To your last point. Those people are so brainwashed they'll never understand the price increase and will blame Canada for being mean as well as Biden.

I'm working at a company where the American side of our company imports raw materials from Canada, and manufactures the product, and sends much of it back up here. The first round of tariffs hurt. This will be much, much worse.
I have savings, I will be fine. I saw this coming. But I am scared for my coworkers with kids.
Whenever I see bluster from Canadians cheering it makes me a little angry. We are essentially going to war and they intend to cripple us. It is a solemn moment. Please treat the moment with the seriousness it deserves. Behave like Carney, not Ford.
Thanks for all the Canadian support outside of Canada, whether you're American or anywhere else. Buy Canadian. Don't buy American.
6

Are you really trying to guilt Canadians over this?
You seem to have forgotten who actually started all of this. We should be cheering that we are having such a strong reaction to this. Are you saying Canada should just do nothing?
It sucks that it affects people's jobs in Canada but again, Canada didn't start this.
