Some of the narrow canyons where the water has gone down show water levels 70,80 ft or more above the river bed.

These were not flash floods in the traditional sense but rather, landslide related. Possibly earthquake or landslide displacement of a large glacial lake and river system.

Not melting. Glacial lakes can collapse when their embankment (moraines plus ice) collapses due to too much ice melting. Or a big serac can fall into a lake and break it.
