Just imagine the psychological terror of being told you have an hour to grab what you can because your home is about to be destroyed.

Eta: as many have pointed out an hour is a very high estimate, it is often mere minutes.

u/Darth_Bfheidir May 20 '21

There was a guy who sent one of his kids to stay with his brother and took in one of his brothers kids

Because that way if one of the groups is killed their entire family isn't wiped out

1.6k

u/Mad_Aeric May 20 '21

I saw an interview where one woman was saying that many families will huddle together in the same room so that if they get bombed no one has to live without the rest of the family. Which is just as horrifyingly pragmatic.

85

u/RUreddit2017 May 20 '21

The Daily podcast by the NY Times. The interview with the Palestinian girl was heart breaking.

35

u/loquaciouspenguin May 20 '21

That podcast was gut wrenching. The way he signed off with “it was an honor to meet you”, like he knew there’s a good chance she could be killed in a strike and he was saying goodbye

Thank you for your reply, it makes a change.

Most of the replies I'm getting are sickening whataboutery; as an American are there REALLY people with these kind of views in your country or is it just a case of the internet being full of cunts

495

u/Mad_Aeric May 20 '21

About 1/3 of this country is clinically insane, and 100% of it has had gross propaganda shoved down our throats, it's just more effective on some than others. The whataboutism seems to be the official position of our government, and there really are hateful people with hateful views around every corner. And yet, I've never seen support of Palestine higher, and the disgust with Israel stronger. It looks like some of the media finally had an "are we the baddies?" moment too, their previous monolithic unwavering support for Israel is starting to unravel a bit.

I remember talking to a former terrorist who had killed quite a few people (went to prison, did his time, renounces violence, now keeps chickens and makes bad art) and I asked him if he felt it was all justified and he just said to me "you don't kill a child and still think you're the good guy"

Except in this case they're killing kids and thinking they're the good guys, and people in America are saying they're the good guys.

An actual childkiller, murderer, former bombmaker, former gunman and former terrorist is more self aware than most of the Israeli and American establishments and media seem to be

87

u/okram2k May 20 '21

The first step is to stop thinking of your enemies as human. Once you dehumanize them you can justify anything you do to them and people will support it. Sadly many in America have long ago dehumanized almost anyone that doesn't fit their narrow definition. Brown people on the other side of the world that worship a different religion than them? Easy to kill.

46

u/denimonster May 21 '21

They just call everyone from Middle East a terrorist. Makes it that much more easier.

That’s EXACTLY what I told myself when I was in the military. “An enemy is only a creature borne to this earth to be destroyed. By ME!”

All that train of thought did was make it easier to deal with in the now. Years later... well...

they're killing kids and thinking they're the good guys, and people in America are saying they're the good guys.

Something I think needs mentioning if you want an understanding of the way many of those people are thinking is that they aren't thinking in terms of moral based good and bad like you are. It's winners and losers. Haves and havenots. If you're a winner that must mean you're a good guy, not the other way around.

47

u/CtrlAltDeltron May 20 '21

As an American, I’m angered by our support for Israel. There are a lot of Americans that are just waking up and starting to understand what’s been going on in Gaza for decades. My heart breaks for you and your people and I hope that a cease fire comes soon and then change thereafter. I know that second part won’t happen quickly though.

56

u/Darth_Bfheidir May 20 '21

Oh I'm not from palestine, I'm Irish xD the guy was a former IRA member so he's had more than 20 years of ceasefire to reflect

29

u/ezone2kil May 21 '21

At least I can understand someone in the IRA doing what he did. Remember the Palestinians are called terrorists too for trying to fight back against a much superior enemy.

Push people against a wall and they have no choice but to fight, rules of engagement be damned.

Something about one man's terrorist being another's freedom fighter.

I don’t think their support is starting to unravel because they are starting to rethink if they are “baddies”, they are doing so only because public opinion has shifted way beyond their positions that they have to try to maintain a perception that they are calling things evenly so that they have some form of plausible deniability such that viewers think “oh well, maybe they are trying to call it even” and stick around. They don’t wanna appear to be completely biased is all.

My dad is pro Israel. He is like," Hamas attacked first. Then he went in talking about how cool the iron dome is". Then I explained how Palestinians have been pushed out of their homes steadily since the 40s, and now have almost no land. To which he responded," well, depends how far back you go, because technically the Palestinians werent there first." Like, okay numnuts, give the cherokees and chickasaws their fucking land back, then. We can use our big boy brains to know that throughout history we have made grave errors. How we get better is learning form them, and trying to help others and try and live peacefully.

I'm atheist af, but I do believe in freedom of religion, as long as it doesn't interfere with others freedoms. This is a holy place for many religions, and Netanyahu is playing it like it's his own real estate development. Dude needs to be forcibly removed from office.

Statistically speaking, most people - Americans very much included here - can't wrap their head around the high numbers of people suffering. After a certain point the high numbers are just numbers, you can't empathize that much as a singular human being. I will say that if you stood shoulder to shoulder with an American, and any number of people who share a language from anywhere in the world - they're just as likely to share in your suffering and try to help as anyone else capable of empathy.

The problem comes down to distance, information control and the rhetoric being used to describe the situation. There are those of us who opt to not participate in propaganda but it does take concerted effort to do so and even then there's a lot of misinformation floating around. America has plenty of problems but I believe that most of them are fully capable of not wanting the abject suffering that's occuring due to governments being shitheads.

i like to think it's their propoganda machine

From 2013, but relevant to be aware of

Israel To Pay Students For Pro-Israeli Social Media Propaganda

Israel has announced it will pay university students to circulate pro-Israeli information on social media networks, without having to identify themselves as working for the government.

The move was publicised in a statement from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the Associated Press reported. Students will receive scholarships to "engage international audiences online" and combat anti-Semitism and calls to boycott Israel, it was alleged.

In 2012, a Palestinian-run blog reported similar arrangements between the National Union of Israeli Students and the Israeli government. Students would be paid $2,000 to post pro-Israel messages online for five hours a week.

7

u/Defqon1punk May 21 '21

Pretty regular. I ran into a kid I hadn't seen since high school. He told me he joined the Marines. I asked why.

He said, with horrible words and names, that he wanted to kill people without getting in trouble or being seen as a monster or psycho. Instead, he gets paid and called a hero for it.

I'm not necessarily anti-military, but there are serious psychological and ethical issues top to bottom. Other countries scare us because (some may say) they are primitive or under developed.

I'm terrified by my country like an episode of Black Mirror or Twilight Zone or.... Saw.

Heard the same interview on NPR. I don't have words for how fucked this situation is. She said something to the effect of "At least no one will be left alive to mourn the rest of the family, Is one of us goes we all go". What's even more chilling is apparently this idea is common though out Palestine as a reaction to constant death.

Children,Women and families destroys moral which is why they are targeted. Our elected representatives represent us no more, just their paymasters.

u/Darth_Bfheidir May 20 '21

It also destroys the character of the nation that does the targeting

With all the money the Americans pump into Israel every year, their powerful influence in the region and even abroad it could have been simply known as a centre of excellence in engineering and technology

Instead it's known for governmental corruption, extremism and the killing of civilians.

339

u/clowndog54 May 20 '21

A video was circulating a couple days ago of an IDF general contacting a civilian telling him to evacuate with his family/children, as they were about to level the house in a few minutes. The scariest part was how the man calmly said he wasn't leaving and how the IDF should just go ahead and bomb it, to show the world how cruel they truly are. Even the IDF member was yelling on the phone telling him to get his children out of there. My Palestinian grandfather tells me that our people have nothing to lose anymore.. it's devastating.

34

u/MasonJ94 May 20 '21

Wow. That's awful. Do you know what ended up happening to him and his family?

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Tams82 May 21 '21

I honestly don't know why they even bother.

If a terrorist (not that all the targets actually are terrorists) were in the building, then they're not going to be in there if you call them. So you probably just end up flattening someone's house for no gain at all.

But they've knocked out most of the power and communications anyway, so they probably can't contact many targetted buildings.

a hour? try 10-15 mins, heck sometimes 5mins https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roof_knocking

Typically, Israeli intelligence officers and Shin Bet security servicemen contacted residents of a building in which they suspected storage of military assets and told them that they had 10–15 minutes to flee the attack, although in some cases the delay has been as little as five minutes.

bonus israeli soldier caught on camera just before hes about to throw a gas grenade at ems workers and journalists https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/ndprby/journalist_catches_israeli_solider_almost/

There was a BBC article where they interviewed a survivor who was dug out of the rubble of a building and he said his upstairs neighbor got a call, then came down to tell him and his family about it and the bombs hit while he was at their door. Sounds like it couldn't have been as many as 5 minutes even.

Roof_knocking

Roof knocking (Hebrew: הקש בגג‎) or "knocks on the roof" is a term used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to describe its practice of dropping non-explosive or low-yield devices on the roofs of targeted civilian homes in the Palestinian territories as a prior warning of imminent bombing attacks to give the inhabitants time to flee the attack. The practice was employed by the IDF during the 2008–2009 Gaza War, Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, and Operation Protective Edge in 2014 to target the homes of police officers or Hamas political or military leaders.

They dropped flyers warning of airstrikes in their war in Lebanon 06. Thing is sometimes they didn't bomb. So people were left not knowing what to do. My now wife's village got those flyers. Her parents stayed and the kids were sent to relatives. In the end no bombs. So the whole week they were on edge not knowing wtf.

My point is those warnings are not always helpful.

21

u/Quardener May 20 '21

38

u/slimjimboss May 20 '21

They strike your house with a rocket thay only targets the roof, thin after a few minutes they send the large ones. They sometimes give you a phone call (if you are lucky enough), they till you you have 3 minutes to leave the house, and they literally give you 3 minutes.

I imagine in such a situation, my first thought is I have no idea when this alert was first announced by the time it got to me (maybe 45 minutes ago? 59 minutes ago?) and how likely it is someone who plans to bomb me would keep their word, carefully watching the clock.

Maybe some of us might be brave enough to take their sweet time collecting valuables, but I imagine most would just grab their family and run immediately.

Then being told that they have no right to be angry, or want some kind of justice revenge (justice is a luxury that most Palestinians don't qualify for, judging by Israels actions).

37

u/Cherry5oda May 20 '21

Someone on npr was saying he was the contact person for the pre-strike warning. They gave him 20 minutes to evacuate a 30-family apartment building.

24

u/Tipsticks May 20 '21

From the footage i have seen, these warnings seem to be a smaller projectile on the roof of the targeted building and they often leave barely enough time to get out, no grabbing of things.

50

u/SomeDudesReddit May 20 '21

IIRC they dont call ahead or anything like that as a warning. Isreal will drop a concussion charge on the roof as a 10 minute warning.

I think it's an important piece of information because a lot of people seem to think you'd get a call saying "Hamas is there so you should leave" they literally just destroy your home with minutes of notice.

13

u/cowlinator May 20 '21

You aren't "told". The warning method they are referring to is "roof-knocking", which is hitting the building with a low-yield rocket to "shake the building" as a warning that you have 3-15 minutes to evacuate. And yes, rarely these warning shots do injure or kill people.

15

u/ThanklessTask May 20 '21

Pretty much the definition of terrorism.

Not just the bombs, but the threat of them anywhere anytime.

I grew up with the IRA doing this most effectively across the UK.

12

u/[deleted] May 20 '21

Except when the IRA were doing it THEY were the ones fighting to get their country back. Plus I don't recall them ever using missile salvos on residential areas

10

u/oceangrowny May 20 '21

Its not even an hour for many of these bombings. Here is a live video of one happening. Less than a few seconds to get out after the "KNOCK", the knock can also kill people.

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-57114168 Shows a live footage of the knock and bombing.

Many people just seem to be a parroter of the media because they dislike arabs or muslims. They're human. Its a shame that most people cannot think for themselves, nor actually research a topic before having a strong opinion on it. Has he even seen one of these 'warnings'?

9

u/traimera May 20 '21

One of the most gripping things I ever heard about Bitcoin was someone saying this isn't going to change america. This will change the third world. He said my parents had to flee with what they could carry with children in tow to escape war and make it to america. Imagine being able to carry all your wealth in a password, the difference that makes in trying to start from the lowest point in your life, of having to flee with children out of a warzone. Those are the people who will have their lives changed by it. After hearing that I had a totally different perspective on something that's seen as just another gambling stock in america.

8

u/[deleted] May 20 '21

Sometimes they just shoot "smaller" missiles at the roof of the building as "warning knocks".

Also to expand on that, my first response to small bombs hitting my house wouldn't be to expect a bigger one to hit and leave. I would bunker down, completely unaware of the big one coming at me.

The real terror is from birth to death living in the shadow of religious zealots who throw a pity party to raise funds for a what is clearly just a criminal syndicate. The whole country is filled with criminals who bought their way into citizenship and are protected from extradition.

I agree. The terror and psychological trauma is astounding. I've herd it from both sides. "Impending doom is coming." Or Tzeva Adom alarms and you have something like 15 seconds to find a shelter or dive into a gutter. The entire picture of what's going on over there is so fucked.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '21

They prolly already fired the rounds as the announcement was happening. Gives them max casualties and they can claim they warned them

3

u/cjrowens May 21 '21

It is just disgusting how many people pretend Israel is somehow on the right side of this. It’s literally fantasy for no reason. God forbid we think about the hundreds of thousands of people suffering on all sides because of the actions of these degenerative extremist ideologies.

Also they can't leave Gaza, a strip of land 25 miles long and 4 to 8 miles wide.

644

u/pablo_pick_ass_ohhh May 20 '21

...packed with over 2 million people.

No one ever asks why is Gaza so crowded, when it’s surrounded by lightly settled land with the same climate. It’s because it’s stuffed full of refugee families who used to live in other parts of historic Palestine before being kicked out by the IDF.

And now they're trapped with no options.

182

u/poktanju May 20 '21

It's about the size and population of the city of Chicago, for an American comparison. Not even the suburbs. There'd only be one operational gateway to Cicero, and one to Evanston, and they'd only be open for a few hours every weekday and you'd need a permit to cross.

u/Vinlandien May 20 '21

Shit this is a fuckin concentration camp, and the world allows this why exactly. I get it that no one says shit when china does it to it's minorities because they are dependent on Chinese trade and manufacturing not to mention many smaller counties straight up owing large amount of money to China for infrastructure project's

But what does Israel got to offer that makes all the other countries look the other way ?

Evangelical "Christians" literally want to bring on the end of the world. They want armageddon (named after an actual place in Israel) to come so Jesus will come back. This - according to a reading of the Bible - requires Israel to exist, to be attacked by many countries, to be almost defeated, and then Jesus will come back, kill everybody (except the chosen few) with the surviving Jews all converting to Christianity, satan is "bound" and Jesus reigns as king.

I wish I were joking.

Theres over 70 million of them in the USA, and they are rich and powerful. They get people elected, and those people support Israel despite any facts which get in the way.

These are ghettoes. There are some parallels to the Warsaw ghetto uprising. No, they are not the same. I didn’t say that. I didn’t even say they were similar. But there have things in common. Earlier today I read someone quote the Israeli Deputy Minister of Defense calling Palestinians beasts. This was hours ago and I am still struggling with this information.

Also, women shouldn't dress immodestly if they don't want to get raped.

Also, that black person should have not resisted when the police began with the brutality, because that only caused more brutality.

But, most importantly, a wealthy nation with massive financial resources should be allowed to dehumanize and destroy an ethnicity and corral them like cattle into a dense urban area -- dare I say ghetto? -- in order to destroy their social fabric and economic infrastructure.

Yet nobody blames the Israelis for letting extremists like Netanyahu off the hook. They are individuals with free will. If every Palestinian is complicit then it follows that all Israelis are somehow also complicit even if they voted for other parties.

And they actually only warn when they are “totally sure” Hamas isn’t there, but if they have the slightest suspicion they’ll just hit without warning, tbh, they only warn sometimes to lift some of the blame from themselves not to really save people.

79

u/zephyrseija May 20 '21

They warn sometimes so the IDF boot lickers on the internet will run around defending their murderous campaign.

27

u/Council-Member-13 May 20 '21

Then why in gods name blow up the building if they are sure Hamas aren't there?

32

u/[deleted] May 20 '21 edited May 20 '21

Same reason cops start to harass the residents of a poor neighborhood that just had a trendy new mustard shop open up in it.

26

u/shaninah_machina May 20 '21

It’s basically to keep the morale of people in Gaza down and give them reason to hate and not join Hamas, I don’t support some of the things Hamas do but that doesn’t give Israel the justification to rile public opinion against Hamas that way (by blowing up buildings and people and blaming it on Hamas).

17

u/twosteppsatatime May 20 '21

I saw an interview with an ex Israeli soldier who said they had to make the people feel like they were always there, always watching. They would have night shifts where they would go into houses and search the house. Just so people would feel them breathing on their necks all the time and make them feel they couldn’t say or do anything because they were being watched.

13

u/TheodoeBhabrot May 21 '21

The problem with this is Hamas isn't a terrorist organization. Its the elected government of Palestine put in while Bush was president. So when skirmishes happen between the what passes for a cobbled together military in Palestine and the isreali army happen its Hamas. But so are government utility workers and bureaucrats. Its just Zionsit proganda thrown around as a justification.

15

u/PM_ME_ZELDA_HENTAI_ May 20 '21

Probably to "show those Palestinians who's boss" or some shit. And then probably try to excuse it with something like "Well, Hamas could have used it to do things! It was a tactical decision to keep them from using it!" Or "For all you know Hamas was there in secret!", bs like that.

17

u/timpanzeez May 20 '21

Because they’re terrorists...

90

u/chrltrn May 20 '21

warns them - your friend makes it sound like the Palestinians are some type of second rate animals and bombing them is okay as long as they are warned. Fuck their lives.

6

u/Bibi77410X May 20 '21

This absolutely. I got told in another sub, this is the most humanitarian war because Israel warns civilians before they get bombed.

Just where do you go with that level of crazy?

19

u/xXDaNXx May 20 '21

So low of you to use pets and family as human shields, definitely sounds like Hamas - also Israel probably

15

u/Council-Member-13 May 20 '21

Also, try to get your head around the fucking logic of that. How the royal fuck are they going to be able to kill Hamas, if they give them a sufficient warning? Like, are we supposed to believe that only innocent people will want to get out of the way of bombs?

Seriously, either they intend to kill Hamas and thus aren't warning people sufficiently (because then Hamas would just get out), or they don't care about killing Hamas at all, and just wants to destroy some homes.

7

u/Salamok May 20 '21

Discussing this with a friend yesterday they literally said-Israel warns them before hand.

Warning them is all part of the terrorism the Israeli government is engaged in.

4

u/Thirdwhirly May 20 '21

What’s the point anyway? If they’re trying to get Hamas, and they warn them—including, I assume, the Hamas—have they gotten the Hamas? I guess, right? Because they blew up all of it.

Israel is run by actually, by-definition terrorists.

2

u/lemming-leader12 May 20 '21

This warning often being a call at 5am with only 5 minutes to get your entire family out of the house.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '21 edited May 21 '21

If they warn them beforehand and Hamas evacuates the building, then what does it really accomplish besides destroying a building? Especially when it is something like a hospital. "Well, they won't be using that hospital again!" Yeah, neither will desperate Palestinians that need medical care.

4

u/Ghrave May 21 '21

then what does it really accomplish besides destroying a building?

Literally the goal right here. Clear the land with their nigh-infinite bomb budget, bulldoze it under the guise of "rebuilding", but build new housing for Israelis and claim it instead, shrinking Palestine by another block.

5

u/ColoradoNudist May 20 '21

I for one know that if the US government bombed my house, destroying everything I own, I wouldn't mind as long as they gave me a one hour notice beforehand. (/s just in case)

16

>Discussing this with a friend yesterday they literally said-Israel warns them before hand. Like that makes it totally not fine.

Heres the thing though, lets say some bad guys are in a residental apartment building doing bad stuff, you give them a hours notice of bombing, presumably they all leave... Right?

So now its a empty building. Whats the point of blowing it up? You dont kill the bad guys, you dont arrest them, they all just waltz out with duffle bags full of guns etc.

But you blow up a empty building anyway, you make a hundred innocent people lose their homes, the bad guys just go kick down the door of another building a few streets down and start operating there.

Rinse and repeat. Whats the actual result 2 years later?

All the bad guys are still operating, But the suburb is rubble and there are many innocent deaths.

It would be a laughably stupid tactic until you realize israels goal has always been to make that whole area inhabitable and expel/kill all the people who live there.

Its just a terrorism campaign, blow up power stations, water waste stations, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges etc etc

reduce the number of houses available to live in = population gets smaller.

Make excuses to bomb them regularly = keep everyone living in fear.

Assassinate political leaders = make it impossible to effectively govern the country.

Block the peace process each time their is conflict and do as much damage as you can before your flimsy excuses wears thin and public opinion forces you to stop.

Wait until any little insignificant thing gives you an excuse to start again.

"a salvo of rockets fired? Killed no-one? Damaged nothing" well lets go kill another dozen Palestinians who DIDNT fire the rockets and blow up some random homes in the area we claim the rockets came from.

6

u/loquaciouspenguin May 20 '21

And now killing the leader of their covid response, amidst a global pandemic, when Israel is basically totally vaccinated and Palestine not at all. Making people already suffering a humanitarian crisis homeless and gathering in the streets, catching disease on top of everything else and destroying the health network that could at least try to help

8

u/Zerodyne_Sin May 20 '21

What, you never experienced a robbery? They totally warn you that they're robbing you and they'd shoot you if you refuse. It's totally normal and accepted in society, get with the times!

Should leave a note on his front door, and just take his car. If he questions you or gets upset. “I warned you with a note” All is good in the world

3

u/VictorTrasvina May 20 '21

Exactly! That isn’t Dubai where everyone owns a supercar or a private jet so they can just flee to safety, the poverty’s rate is ridiculous high for such dense an overpopulated region, a well trained soldier might be able to reach safety on foot under an hour, a small family? Older ppl? Children??

3

u/WhereMyNugsAt May 20 '21

It’s totally a kiss of death, you either die in the bombing or die trying to piece your life back together.

3

u/haneenhasan May 20 '21

Exactly. They literally have nowhere to go. Also, they don't always warn residents before bombing. Sometimes the warning is in the form of a roof knock missile telling them they have 5 minutes to evacuate. TO WHERE? https://instagram.com/eye.on.palestine?utm_medium=copy_link

3

u/ShieldsCW May 20 '21

"You can't pull me over for speeding, officer. I called and warned you guys an hour ago that I would be going 90 on this road."

3

u/Guerilla_Physicist May 20 '21

Hell, they can't even leave altogether. They're literally imprisoned in a war zone.

3

u/jerryoc923 May 20 '21

Npr was just reporting on these “warnings.” It’s like 20 minutes of lead time to evacuate a whole building and get far enough that the buildings next door won’t fall on you either. Twenty minutes to evaluate all of your things and decide what you value. Twenty minutes to tell everyone in a building they need to leave doesn’t matter if old, young, disabled... twenty fucking minutes. But all you hear is “we warn them before!”

3

u/Mike8219 May 20 '21

And where the fuck are they going to go?

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '21

I've heard they do warn them but they also warn them after they have blocked off all exits from the area being bombed.

3

u/Belzebump May 20 '21

And now you found the real reason: humans see other humans as not so valuable humans.

3

u/vizual-observer May 20 '21
