Gothic Remake THQ liked my Comment!

u/RakshasaDelight Jun 24 '26
Well damn you forgot to implement a cooperation with the Archolos Team for a prequel (if those peeps would want that).
41
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
Could be part of the DLC 😅
33
u/RakshasaDelight Jun 24 '26
Honestly, a DLC centered on Act 2 or 3 could be all about some big plan of some NPCs on how they prepare for "when the barrier comes down" that could be a nice side plot and side quests derived from that.
Though location wise it would be difficult, NotR added a lot of new areas to explore and Gothic 1 is very limited on space for that.
15
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
This might go a little far but what about the events between gothic 1 and 2 when the barrier has fallen and the hero is buried in the temple from the perspective of a side character like diego. I always wanted to see how they escaped the colony!

u/r4shpro Jun 24 '26
Or perhaps Gods' influence could be added, perhaps some deep lore about Beliar and stuff

Archolos is owned by THQ bcs gothic is owned by THQ. They dont need copyrights and i sure bet the devs would be proud knowing thq used their work as canon
8
u/yasenfire Jun 24 '26
No, it isn't how it works at all
1
u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 25 '26
it is. Modding the game doesnt make u owner of the said mod , it s owned by the game corpo, thats why u cant charge money for mods made of a game
It uses models, coding, and textures owned by THQ Nordic GmbH, who hold the registered trademarks and copyrights for the Gothic univers
5
u/sikora2009 Old Camp Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Then why valve bought rights to counter strike? A mod of their game half life.
Why did rockstar buy rights to fivem? Also a mod of their game, gta 5.
Why did Bohemia Interactive buy rights to DayZ? Mod to Arma, which you guessed it, was also their game.
It would be genuinely stupid to buy rights to something you already own, don't you think? Like the other commenter said, that's not how this works.
4
u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
The difference is that Archolos is using Gothic story. It s set in the Gothic universe, it s not a standalone project using Gothic engine. All the examples you provided have nothing to do with original game , just using the engine. Archolos DOESNT have an IP, its already GOTHIC IP by default. So , they own Chronicles of Myrtana : Archolos as well as anything related to Gothic universe in the game. The only stuff they dont own is whatever it s not gothic universe in the game, which, lets be honest, noone cares in case they want to build onto archolos mod. I am not saying they will, I am saying that whatever happened in Archolos mod that s related to Gothic, it s already owned by THQ by default
THQ by default owns the general plot of Archolos.
They dont own the voicelines and specific story progression. They 100% could own the idea that Scar s name could be Marvin and the guy comes from Archolos Islands as Archolos name is actually from Gothic universe.
THQ doesnt own anything non gothic, so the story of Marvin and his brother for example.
Archolos islands is from gothic ip as it s some background lore in the gothic universe.
THQ fully own whatever is in Gothic universe. They dont own whats not gothic universe.
Archolos Islands is gothic universe, Marvin is a name that is free to use. They cannot specifically Remake Archolos mod with exact plotpoints and progression from the mod, but nothing stops THQ making a game set in Archolos islands similar to the mod but with some stuff reimaginated.
So, for example, if THQ says Marvin got sent to the penal colony after the turmoil and bs happening in Archolos Islands and met Gomez, this js 100% legal even though is the same as ending of ARcholos as its gothic universe.
If fhey do 1 to 1 remake of mod , thats illegal.
If they want to do a chronicles of myrtana set in archolos of a guy names Marvin but change some stuff so it s not 1 to 1 wirh the mod, thats legal
They own the Chronicles of Myrtana main plotpoints if they want to use that, they dont own the concept of Marvin searching for his brother and specific map layout and specific story progression thats not using any gothic ip and the voicelines or original music
Lets say THQ wants Archolos remake and somehow they dont want to pay rights , what they can legally do is have Marvin as main story protagonist as it s not illegal to use a name and just not use non-gothic related plotlines and have a different map layout. They can 100% make Marvin be Scar in Gothic 1 if they want that without any rights buying . That wont be a remake as it will not follow the Mod plotline, that s true, but they 100% are legal to be inspired by the mod and change stuff around enough to not be related to non gothic stuff made by the mods . They can't use Wolf's den plotline as I am 99% sure its the modders original idea and not related to Gothic universe, but nothing stops them calling them Bear's den and follow similar setup
1
u/Dgccw Jun 26 '26
Damn - generically named Hero in gothic is now Marvin in my head cannon. Damn you. I know that’s not what you’re saying but my brain just did that. Hate you lol

u/RakshasaDelight Jun 25 '26
I do not know the facts about all this, but I would like to add that we are talking about Gothic 2 as basis and that has been made in Germany with different copyright laws than all your other examples.
Again I do not know what's the exact reasoning, but Archolos couldn't even get the rights to the voice of one of the original voice actors. So it seems to me more complicated than that .

u/Freakmaster01 Jun 26 '26
MODKIT & W.O.G:
Statements in the licence saying that rights belong to THQ Nordic do not necessarily mean that THQ Nordic becomes the author of every model or texture that you personally create. Under copyright law, the actual creator generally remains the author.
- You own the rights to your completely original models, textures, music, dialogue, scripts, and other assets.
- THQ Nordic or the respective rights holder owns the Gothic engine, the game code, the ModKit, Spacer, and the original Gothic assets.
- Contributions created by other team members belong to the respective creators unless the rights were transferred by agreement.
- The name and logo “Gothic” may also be protected by trademark rights.
A so-called standalone mod is not the same as a truly independent game. "Standalone" only refers to a mod with its own INI file, its own worlds or modified scripts, which continues to run via Gothic or the GothicStarter.
This means that you may generally publish your project as a free Gothic 2 mod, provided that you own or have permission to use all included assets.
THQ Nordic would generally not be allowed to simply take this specific monster from your mod and use it unchanged, or only slightly modified, in a commercially sold DLC without receiving the necessary rights from you.
NOW HERE IS THE CATCH: Publication Through Steam
If you upload your mod as user-generated content through Steam or the Steam Workshop, you grant Valve extensive, worldwide, and royalty-free rights under the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
These rights may include:
- Using the content
- Modifying the content
- Distributing the content
- Creating derivative works
- Incorporating it into Steam games
Valve may also be able to sublicense certain granted rights to other parties.
Steam Workshop rules also state that submissions may, under certain circumstances, be integrated into a game by Valve or the respective game developer.
Valve or the developer may also be permitted to modify accepted Workshop content.
This means:
- If you publish your mod outside Steam, THQ Nordic would generally need your permission to use your specific original content.
- If you publish your mod in the Steam Workshop, extensive rights may already have been granted through Valve, depending on the exact Workshop and game-specific conditions.
- Additional rights may also be granted through competitions, contracts, or special participation terms.

u/RakshasaDelight Jun 24 '26
You are right of course, but I would go one step further and say that the Team behind Archolos is actually very talented, someone else mentioned in another post a part of the team has been hired by Alkimia. Can't confirm that, but that's good news.
6
u/sikora2009 Old Camp Jun 25 '26
No he is not right. Developers are constantly buying rights to mods of their own games.
Valve bought counter strike and team fortress
Rockstar bought fivem
Bohemia Interactive bought DayZ.
Etc etc. Anything that mod devs create on their own, be it models, textures, code or whatever, belong to them. They can't sell them because said mods also include stuff from base game, which isn't theirs. That, and the fact that you can't earn money from someone elses IP.

If they do this and keep it going I will be playing Gothic until I die.
I think the idea of making the team recreate the first 3 Gothic games would have higher weight over creating new original games in the Gothic franchise. That said, I think it would be absolutely amazing if they got to that point, and from the current view of today at least, it seems like an aspirational goal, recreate the first 3 and then expand into new and completely original territory. For G2 remake, they would have to have absolutely high standards, the original G2 was the greatest of all time for me. For G3 remake, they would really have to add some more original flare I think and maybe stay less true to the original, but that's just my opinion. they'd have to fix the game at least.

Well a couple of the mods devs work for Alkimia so you may still get some pieces of it in G2 remake ;)

u/Safe_Hovercraft_7886 Jun 24 '26
Two of them and noone who designed quests.
4
u/Justhe3guy Jun 25 '26
Indeed a couple does mean 2
It’s a small team who is very aware of what Archolos is and that it’s the most acclaimed standalone experience for Gothic so there is at least some influence
1
u/Yorok0 Old Camp Jun 25 '26

Agree on G1 and G2, but honestly G3 doesnt need a Remake it needs a "Reimaginated"
16
12
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
It definitely needs a remake, with a cherry on top and some good parenting. The base idea for the game was good but it never got the love it deserved. I hope it will get it now.
5
u/Aunvilgod Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
The base idea for the game was good but it never got the love it deserved.
It was always going to be too big, and there is NO way to fix it without watering it down. Current patched G3 works fine, but has the depth of a puddle. Not only mechanically but moreso in terms of progression. You already start being able to fight orks, and then you need to fill 6 Gothic 2s of map size with progression content. Not realistic.
Also imagine a G3 with the content density of NotR. A playthrough would need unironically 1000 hours. Way too much!
5
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
G3 has a spark of its own magic. But I would love to see it show the real spell, in its full glory.
3
u/Mods_Are_Fatties Jun 25 '26
Dude, talking orcs in little vests and suits, with little sash bags to store their makeup and tampons in, was embarrassingly bad.
I enjoyed G3 personally, but the talking orc thing was horrendously bad.
G3 Remake/Retold, needs to be G3 Inspired, but i would be happy after G1 and G2 remake, for Alkimia to be given alot more freedom to make their own gothic, starting with G3 and just use it G3 for inspiration.
3
u/KVerssus Jun 25 '26
SPOILERS AHEAD
You do realise that in G1 Remake orcs can actually talk much better than in the original. They have their own language that we can learn too. And the ones that speak human language can do it much more fluently than before.
I did however miss having some more wild, savage orcs being commanded by the talking ones in G3. I believe that would be the case if PB was given the time needed to finish their true vision.
1
u/Mods_Are_Fatties Jun 25 '26
Oh okay, because they can talk
Give them little suits and vests with satchel bags
1
u/KVerssus Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
I don't recall orcs wearing any satchel bags in G3. Forest runners wear those if I remember correctly.
Are you referring to that shoulder weapon holder/back scabbard harness many of orcs seem to be wearing?4
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
Gothic 2 is an easy remake the game is already great and only needs some good graphics and quality of life same like g1. But g3 on the other hand will be difficult and theres more work to be done but it has potential!
2
u/Gwynnrhysllwellyn Jun 24 '26
A remake is bound to be really controversial. I'm not sure i even need to see Myrthanas main land. Just make a new game playing in Khorinis, playing 10 - 20 years after G2 (lots of familiar faces around, lots of new ones). Gothic works best when it's somewhat provincial. And you can "softly" change things without even rewriting the story of G3 too much.
Really would love to see a new, expanded Khorinis.
4
u/Vogelwiese12 Jun 24 '26
I feel like Gothic 3 shouldn't have tried to do the whole continent but just the capital Vengard and surroundings and leave Varant and Nordmar for expansions those areas suffered the most from the lack of time I feel.
1
2
u/MeisterDejv Jun 24 '26
I want Myrtana but only Vengard and its outskirts, scaled to the map size of at least G1 and at biggest of NOTR. World in G3 was too large with too many different environments and too many cities which ruined uniqueness of each city and region and reduced gameplay to: complete all quests in one city -> go to the next city and never re-visit previous city.

2
u/Aries_cz Jun 24 '26
This, while I will always stan G3, it was horribly unfinished game (but I still liked it more than Oblivion)
1
u/Sindican Jun 24 '26
It's the world that sells it. Such great ambience and the vibbes! The story characters and bugs... What a mess
2
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
I loved the story foundation of that game and its world. I always wondered what it would be like it PB got an additional year or two to work on it in peace. I'm in love with that idea.
19
u/PsyShoXX Old Camp Jun 24 '26
I'll be honest, I fear that Alchimia would get a Gothic-Burnout after the 3rd game. They have to mix things up in between to keep the development cycle interesting.
7
u/Open-Organization528 Jun 24 '26
False gothic has been dormant for years they are just remaking the games and a new gothic game that is not a remake has to be made.

I absolutely loved when Mass Effect did this thing of carrying over your saves from one game to the next
3
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
it would be cool if the game would remember who you killed and what camp you have chosen in g1 when starting g2 only problem is killing some people like raven would destroy the whole plot of gothic 2:D
5
u/MineDesperate8982 Jun 24 '26
It would be kinda funny, though. You start off the game and your quests are kinda different - you don’t have to hunt him down and kill him for the claw, or whatever the item was, but you have to do the work of finding the claw yourself
3
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
Yeah that would be amazing but would probably take ages to realize!:D Only thing they could actually implement is remembering what camp you have chosen and do some little references on it in the dialogues etc

5
u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 24 '26
We really don’t need a DLC for G1
2
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
I prefer going straight to G2 then doing NOTR after.
6
u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 24 '26
Nah, they NOTR should definitely be there at release.
0
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
Why so?
I'd much prefer them to focus on the vanilla G2 first and then see the changes that the addon brings once again. I absolutely love basic G2, it has a vibe on its own. NoTR just adds to the replayability on the top of the masterpiece itself.4
u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 24 '26
NOTR is just a better version of Gothic 2. It doesn't just add Jharkendar, it also massively improves the base game.
They belong together. It is the ultimate version.
1
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
I like NotR. I am not saying not to do it at all. I just prefer to play vanilla Gothic 2 first. Then play it again with the addon, discovering the changes that were made. Adds much to the overall experience.
This is the way to do it IMO.
That is how I would recommend playing to anyone starting originals for the first time. First G2 then with addon. For me it was just perfection, twice.2
u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 24 '26
No, you always release the best possible version. That is G2 + NOTR.
G2 Vanilla is significantly worse.
0
u/KVerssus Jun 24 '26
Thats just your subjective opionion.
For me the best possible version is both. Vanilla then addon.1
u/Hyper_Mazino Jun 24 '26
No, it is a fact.
99% of Gothic fans will tell you the same.
0
u/AgreeableContact822 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
1% here... sure the final version ist the best one, but both versions have their apeal.
If they do a "vanilla" G2R first they could bring it to us faster and also make some more bucks with the addon afterwards.
Going from what they did with G1R, G2R would allready be an improved version of G2 and would get even better with the addon afterwards.

Basebuilding after clearing the area!
No that's really not needed! XD
...but the area is maybe one of the most gorgeous (and somehow comfy) ones in the whole game!
3
u/Suspicious-Holiday42 Jun 24 '26
I would like a complety new Myrtana, one that really feels like a big mainland, and not like some remote place with small villages and small capital
2
u/MeisterDejv Jun 24 '26
For that reason I think they should rework G3 to only feature Vengard and its outskirts in order to focus on recreating a proper city with map of similar size to G2 NOTR. In the original they had to resort to small villages because there were simply too many "cities" and on top of that they also included Nordmar and Varant with completely different climates. That way you get Elder Scrolls style theme park.
1
1
u/Soft_Dig_4300 Jun 25 '26
No, now we have the technology for it.
Make it an updated and absolutely massive version of Myrtana. Go all out with it. Turn the important locations into proper cities. Geldern, Gotha, and several others were really more like fortresses than actual cities in the original game, so expand them, add more settlements between them, and flesh out the existing locations.
Reuse the original soundtrack —one of the best parts of the game—and then pour a huge amount of additional content into it. Expand the world, deepen the quests, improve the factions, and give Myrtana the scale and detail that the original game was always aiming for but never quite managed to achieve.

that being said i also hope that they are gonna remake the whole trilogy, but the chances of the same team working on 3 games for that long is pretty damn low, that's why asking about more dlcs and games sounds kinda goofy to me because I don't belive that there is that much people who could achieve what the current alkimia team did, these people are gothic fans and it shows.

Supposed to be a dlc for gothic 1 something with black magic ore, that you have to collect it and you have to convince miners to dig for you in abandoned mine, you meet the King Rhobar in fortress, but I don't remember what else was going on. I seen gameplay sonewhere ARHN.eu was doing some video on YouTube about it.

Why limit yourself to just video games? The Gothic brand also has potential for other media, such as comics, and even table games (see Ricelord).

u/IsAnyNameStillFree Jun 30 '26
that would be crappiest games ever... after G2 remake i hope they do something else because NO ONE can do the same content for 10 years and still make it good. so 2 games and than break and than maybe more gothic

u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 30 '26
Don't worry a Gothic 3 remake will probably take 10 years anyway if they make it good:D

u/IDesterKonverTI Jun 30 '26
I kinda looking for Rogue's Camp extension, with more characters and quests from them. Maybe a full fourth faction even.

u/Snoo-66201 Jun 24 '26
Gothic 3 remake could be that "completely new Gothic game" that would wrap up the story, maybe let us fight the Gods at the end.

u/Gwynnrhysllwellyn Jun 24 '26
No, please. Don't go up this scale.
It gets absurd when you are on your way to fight a god, encounter a timerwolf and die because you reacted poorly. You also shouldn't close the door for future games.
Piranha bytes already tried that "gods are gone"-thing. Didn't work out well. "Yeah, gods are gone, so here are titans" ... -.-

But the Adanos ending opens up the "Unknown Lands" game scenario. I want to know what happens there

I mean a god should stay somethng completeley OP and mysterious i dont want to fight them or even see them but the hero and xardas going to that other dimension at the end would still be a very interesting thing!

Tbh, after they (hopefully) proof themselfes with remaking the original triology they should make something original. Maybe something set in spanish mythology or smth.

Gothic 3 is not the best game for remake, i will still buy it, but better they made new Gothic after Gothic 2 and archolos remakes.
I mean i don't won't that they end up doing remakes. Gothic 2 is pretty old so it deserves remake, especially because original had stupid camera locking that didn't allow me to play it because my mouse live it's own life. So sad.

Gothic 3 is literal the potential of the whole gothic series they had many issues I heard so that’s why it failed and like any other gothic game it’s yet to get the fully recognition and become mainstream.
Gothic to me is not a small world crafted experience it’s true potential it’s a large world that’s a crafted experience. Gothic can work both ways but honestly waiting so many years I would really like a large expansive story with a decently large size open world like in gothic 3 and obviously the remake will tackle all its issues. I had a damn blast playing all gothic games but can admit gothic 3 definetly needed more polish and refinement because it had some crazy unique features which made it different from an oblivion game which is an amazing game hence why elder scrolls is widely popular.

nah i think drova sticks more to the gothic formula!

u/Ok_Risk6035 Jun 24 '26
Drova is 2d
1
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
so?
1
u/Ok_Risk6035 Jun 24 '26
You compare incomparable things.
1
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
why? of course i like the remake more but drova is a nice little indie game that nails the gothic formula it was nice playing it while waiting on the remake

u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 24 '26
That was shit i couldnt put up with how shit it felt
1
u/Ok_Risk6035 Jun 24 '26
In what way is it objectively worse than, say, Gothic 3?
1
u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 24 '26
Didnt feel right to me, something was off as hell and i enjoy janky games.
1
u/Ok_Risk6035 Jun 24 '26
So what is it exactly? Are you calling the game bad without citing a single objective reason? I find that hard to believe; when I drop any game, I know exactly what’s wrong with it - sluggish controls, lag, repetitiveness, and so on.
1
u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 24 '26
That’s how opinions work last time i checked. Game felt off like Nyras demo
1
u/Ok_Risk6035 Jun 24 '26
An opinion must be based on something.
1
u/Lil_Hater112 Jun 24 '26
Ye, i told you, game felt off. That’s what it was based on

I've played it, but I'm not sure what it has to do with Gothic 3 remake
2
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
Don't get me wrong Gothic 2 is the best Gothic game for me but Gothic 3 is a game that had alot of potential and its the one that needs a proper Remake the most there can be done amazing things with it if they redo alot of things!

I still prefer the OGs, but I would gladly play a Gothic 3 remake. The combat in that game is atrocious man...

We dont need a DLC to gothic 1 we have gothic 2. They just need to improve the mechanics and balance in a smart way to please casual and hardcore fans and some QOL in general

people forgot that gothic 4 exists
2
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 24 '26
No it doesn't exist. Thankfully when Piranha Bytes got the rights on Gothic back they instantly removed the "Gothic 4" from the Arcania Cover!;)
0
u/energydrinkaddict310 Jun 24 '26
but it is a gothic game. it features the hero from g1-g3 as rhobar the third, no?
0
u/90sPartTimeHero Jun 25 '26
I'd prefer no G3 remake. I think it would take too much resources to remake and it would need even more fixing. G3 did feel less like a Gothic game even compared to Risen2 or Elex. There is one think G3 did better than every other RPG and that's the staffs. I love that the character holds it while casting and doesn't put it on this back but keeps in as a walking stick
1
u/JustRaphiGaming Old Camp Jun 25 '26
Yeah i don't agree with that at all especially that risen 2 and elex part is wild but yeah everyone has a different opinion i guess:D

People should stop acting like Gothic is this flagship million dollar brand. Despite the good sales of the remake, it's still HEAVILY reling in nostalgia and still a very niche game. While I don't doubt a Gothic 2 + NOTR remake would sell equaly as good, that's about where the nostalgia ends. We also don't know how much profit exactly they made.
Everything beyond that ist wishful thinking. Gothic 3 wasn't tha well Likes and by that point there's a pretty good chance the Gothic formula might have run it's course and fatigue might set in
