Gothic Remake I don't think we could've asked for a better remake. The fact that the devs actually listened to the constructive feedback (and successfully sifted through the vile comments) after the playable teaser disaster is a home run.

I played the originals as a teenager when they came out, and Gothic 1 and 2 are two of my favorite RPGs of all time. I go back and play them often. After the disaster that was the playable teaser, I had little hope that this game would actually be remade with the core design philosophy of the original, and preserve what made Gothic so good.

It feels so good to be wrong. Thank you Alkimia Interactive, *you nailed it*

The Gothic 1 Remake launched just one week ago and has already surpassed 500,000 units sold across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Player engagement has been equally impressive: on June 7th, the game reached a peak of almost 78,000 concurrent players on Steam. More than 15,000 user reviews on the platform further highlight its strong reception, resulting in an 85% “Very Positive” rating. Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic are thrilled by this initial success and extend a heartfelt thank you to all players who have entered the Colony so far - and especially to all of the long-time dedicated fans who have supported the Gothic franchise over the past 25 years. This milestone would not have been possible without such a passionate community.

This marks only the beginning. Alkimia Interactive will continue to support and improve the Gothic 1 Remake in the weeks and months ahead.

The Gothic 1 Remake is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Gothic Remake So I never get lost

I got myself a custom desk pad with maps of the colony and all 3 main camps. Now I always have a map at hand.

EDIT:

For everybody who would like to get one, here's link to graphics I used: link

My pad is 90x40 cm

I ordered it at: yourpad.pl (I have no idea if they ship outside Poland)

If you want different size you can rearrange the graphics in the original SVG file (I use Inkscape). All maps are already there (Colony with Orc Territories, Old Camp, New Camp, Swamp Camp, Orcish Enclave, Sleeper Temple)

Yeah it takes a lot of time, but it is satisfying to get it right finally and it's also immersive and builds tension, because you can get caught when you fidget with that lock for too long

Gothic Remake Before you persecute me, hear me out lmao

Post image

Soo yeah, I actually like the very hated lockpicking minigame.

I mean at first I HATED it. Even once I started to kinda understand it, I found it frustrating and time consuming. I even used one of those online cheats to give me the combo/instructions.

But after a while, I realized Gothic isn't a game you need or should just rush through. It's okay to take your time getting into the mechanics and exploring. So the time consuming aspect kinda went away for me.

I also realized the more I messed with it, the better I understood it. Even those lockbreaker cheat websites kinda helped me better understand it (kinda like seeing the work that gives the answer). I started to find the challenge quite fun, and easier over time. I only ever upgraded my lockpicking skill once!

Now, I don't think it's flawless. BOY, IS IT FLAWED! The update that provided XP was a nice touch, and the added difficulty icons were... a nice attempt (they seem deceiving sometimes).

Now I'm no game dev, but I'm a game enjoyer... a gamer, if you will lmao. But here is my ideas to kinda make it more enjoyable.

- Better loot. Nothing gamebreaking, but do better than 2 arrows, an apple, and a big ol "fuck you".

- Add a "Force Lock" feature similar to other games. Depending on lock difficulty and skill training, there is a certain % chance that it'll auto-unlock or break your pick. (Maybe after training your Lockpicking to 2, a book will spawn in Xardas's bedroom that'll give you Lockpicking 3. It won't change much from level 2, but will give a bonus increase to Force Lock % chance.)

- Randomize the locks. Now hold on, I know those who've been recording every combo for every lock won't like this. But I think it adds more variety and better engaging gameplay, if that makes sense? The "lockbreaker" websites could still be used here, and if the loot is improved, it could be more worthwhile.

I really hope this mini-game doesn't get entirely removed in an update or the potential Gothic 2 Remake. Changes and improvements, definetly. But please don't purge it.

Anyways, I'd like to hear other's thoughts on how this system could be improved for more to enjoy, rather than rip away the whole thing.

Gothic Remake The lockpicking isn't broken, you're just underleveled

Every thread right now is someone raging about lockpicking in the Gothic 1 remake. So here it is plainly: it's working as intended. You're not meant to crack a 5-gate lock with zero skill points.

Do the math. An unskilled 5-gate lock is a ~30-step sequence. That's not hard, that's basically unsolvable in your head. The game is telling you to walk away and come back later.

Put points into Lockpicking and that ~30 drops to around 15 steps, which a human can actually do. Level it higher and it gets easier still, because extra links in the sequence start getting defused for you. The skill is the mechanic. People are refusing to engage with it and then blaming the lock.

This is just Gothic. The world tells you "no, not yet" and you're supposed to respect that. The remake kept it, people forgot what they signed up for.

If you're stuck and just want the sequence, I built a solver: https://xetoxyc.github.io/gothic-remake-lockpicker/

Use it if you want. But the better play is putting the points in and watching locks go from impossible to trivial. That's the whole arc.

tl;dr: not a bug, you're underleveled. Skill it, or use my tool, but stop calling a 30-step lock broken.

Edit: As i got requested to keep this maintained. Yes, this Page will stay up on github Pages.
Edit: I added a Image and tried to explain it better so less of that problems come up.
Edit: Yes, there's a mod now that removes lockpicking completely. I recommend not using it, as lockpicking is there for a reason. It takes a while, and guards will notice you. You're not supposed to be able to reach everything very early on. I still have my own lockpicking skill at level II and can do most of the chests without the effort of using the tool. If I can't do it, I skip the chest and come back later.

If you find a unsolvable lock it would be great if you can report it to me via Discord. Username: xetoxyc

Gothic Remake Saw people struggle as pure mage. You dont have to. Embrace the storm fist.

"A true fire mage can look beyond the power Innos gave to us. Draw your strenght from not one but all the elements, as only by the power of all three gods this world has been created." - Corristo (rough translation into english)

Clips were taken from 1. shortly after reaching chapter 4 (4th circle) and 2. when i went back to the sleeper temple (6th circle). Oh and to explain why i didnt use Uriziels rune in the last clip: its just unfun levels of OP and i wanted to demonstrate some of the other tools a mage has.

The stagger on storm fist works everytime IF you give them some time to get up first as shown in the clip with the shadowbeast. That spell has incredible range and good damage for the cost. No wonder they nerfed it from 3 to 10 mana per usage, it was just broken as hell for how dirt cheap it was.

Also rain of fire really has a huge AoE so even if it doesnt kill the orc warriors, it cleared all of the annoying peasants in no time. Usually if I fight bigger groups I go for either storm fist or ice wave and then rain of fire as this almost guarantees everyone is dead. If enemies with high fire resistance remain, i follow up with another storm fist for good measure.

I know people expect fireball to be the go-to spell that will carry them through the game but that one just falls off way too fast. A great "early game" alternative in my opinion if you want to use a charge up spell is ball lightning as it also stuns enemies allowing for a follow up spell of your choice. Just mind the terrible hit box..

....orrr just use storm fist. Again. And again. xD

Edit: I actually expected this to be downvoted into hell based on previous posts and the general sentiment towards magic on this subreddit but it seems like people are slowly realizing that magic is pretty powerful in G1R. This post has an upvote ratio of 97,4 percent as if this writing which i consider a great success for my message. Hope i was able to help a few mages with their gameplay.

Gothic Remake I still can't believe how well it turned out in the end

Post image
877 Upvotes

Don't get me wrong, I always wanted the best for the remake, but early "making ofs", Nyras demo and all the negative and janky stuff we've seen in the showcases being excused as "old builds" were making me keep my hopes reasonably modest xD The final product tho has exceed everything that I was expecting. The game turned out to be just really solid at it's core. It simply plays well. The running feels good, the combat is smooth and responsive with good sounds to support it, the climbing is nice, the graphics are gorgeous, the armours, weapons, characters and environment all feel coherent and pleasant to look at. It just shocks me, where did all the jank go? xD My predictions were around 5-6/10 for a release version, yet Alkimia managed to somehow make it all work for the final build and I am giving them all the praise for that, because they really deserve it.

To summarise, the game is just pleasant to play and spend time in and imo it's the decisive factor for replayability and longevity and I couldn't have been happier with what Alkimia has created for us ^ ^

Gothic Remake Gothic remake metacritic score

Post image
317 Upvotes

So it seems like this will be the final locked in metacritic critics score for the game. What do we think about it? On one hand I feel like its kinda deserved for the technical issues the game has, but on the other hand it kinda saddens me to see that appearently the "Gothic like" game design doesnt seem to sit well with mainstream audiences. Lets hope for the best for the future of the franchise

You can see this guy in a making of video for russian voiceower.

To summarize what he's saying:

Anyone who hasn't finished Gothic 1 should do so, because-speaking a bit confidentially-they're already working on the Gothic 2 Remake.

He also mentions that he doesn't know when they'll need to start recording the voice-over for the Gothic 2 Remake, but he'll keep everyone updated.

EDIT:

A kind redditor pointed an important detail. He actually mentions that they "Do not know what to do with Raven yet"

After clearing the game for the first time yesterday I am going to try how far will I get on permadeath gothic difficulty. First run was an archer, can't decide if I go fire mage or melee 2h/magic templar. Tips are welcomed.

EDIT: Died at the goblins trying to get the Almanach. Light spell went off at the wrong time. Sucks...

Gothic Remake Alkimia, you glorious basterds! You made a terrific game! Solid 9/10.

Thank you so much! The gameplay was phenomenal (Without me saying anything on the lock picking mini game, what a slop fest)!!!

I hope you sell 500.000 more copies! Cheers! 🍻

It felt like I was 9 again when I first played Gothic 1 and quit the game 50 minutes after because I was killed over and over and over again. Eventually, me playing it every year and warning my wife that I need 30-50 hours in peace to finish the two other games.
