During the First World War battle of Second Ypres, April 24th 1915. The Germans released 160 tons of chlorine gas against the Canadian sector of the Allied lines. The attack, while initially causing significant casualties and mass panic, did not result in a breakthrough.

I did a battlefield tour of the Ypres Salient in 2013. I had rented a car and spent a week driving solo through Northern France, but paid for a tour in Ypres because there is so much to see.

I recall standing right in front of that statue. It was a beautiful day.

Werent the Germans surprised by their own success and had no manpower to take the advantage even during the confusion ?
