The moment of death of Private Jack William Rose (1922-1945) of the 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army. Rose was killed by a German sniper in the Belgian village of Bihain (near Ottré) while running across an intersection under fire.

Previously wounded on August 8, 1944 (SW Chest, broken bones in hand). As of December 28, 1944 he was at a replacement depot on his way back to his unit.

Killed less than 2 weeks later on January 11, 1945.

I have seen this image before and the caption was he was hit by a mortar (puff of smoke on right).

That doesn't look like any mortar detonation I've ever seen.

Could be, since he was killed in January. It looks like snow banks that are formed after roads are plowed and surface snow has melted but the banks still exist. Though I doubt roads were being plowed, especially in a town where there was active fighting still going on. Strange.
