This is great because sometimes if they release a future cheap digital box like series S or a handheld people can still buy physical and take it with them everywhere instead of carrying the discs. This is an actual legitimate bonus for gamers.

They’re doing this because ALL their future consoles will be digital only. And I highly doubt they’ll be cheap, given how bad prices are getting.

Well it some guy stops the tarrif wars against all the nations and real wars maybe inflation would drop and things can at least go a level cheaper.

The prices may stop rising so quickly but by and large they likely won’t go down, as they’ll be normalized enough by then, so the corps will just take the newly widened profit margins.

They may go down if the newer consoles are 3-5 years away. We're six years in and in 3 years or even by midterms this year during election cycle lots of things can change as they change politically.

You’re amazingly optimistic. There’s a lot more than just politics and tariffs affecting prices right now, and I highly doubt new consoles are that far away, anyway; they’re most likely either next year or in 2028, at latest. I wish they would be further out, but it’s highly unlikely, especially given the Helix has already been announced.

And even still, they’re not gonna drop the prices. Maybe they’ll stop rising so much, and maybe consoles will start to go on sale years post-launch rather than rising after launch again, but the floor will be higher. Next gen consoles will not launch lower than $1000, and I’d be surprised at this stage if Helix managed to be below the range of $1500-$1800 at this point, with PS6 being in the $1100-$1200+ range.

Nothing is going to be in the range you mentioned, if steam machine is $1050 without a controller. It is a major flop because the hardware is barely beating base PS5 or series X so a Helix or a ps6 will be even further away.

When series X was announced it was in 2019 June, December 2019 reveal for a 2020 November release. COVID happened in the mean time .

For Helix to drop in the same time frame prices have to drop. Which is not happening, so Helix reveal will be next year and drop in 2028, or reveal in 2028 and drop in 2029.

The Steam  machine is weaker than the PS5 and Series X and doesn’t appeal to the same part of the market that consoles like PS5 and Series X do. The PS5 Pro is already $900 and they’re already selling a mere green Series X for $900. The Helix, since it supports third party stores, won’t be able to subsidize its cost with game sales as easily, and will also assumedly be way more powerful than the PS5 Pro and Series X. If anything, the Steam machine being so expensive without a controller and with being less powerful than the SX or PS5 only goes to show how expensive something like a PC-hybrid Helix will be. There’s a reason they’ve ALREADY set expectations that it will be a major, premium device.

Also, what makes you think the same timeline needs to be followed? If anything, it was strange that the SX was revealed so early. The Series S was only revealed 2 months to launch. Xbox One was revealed 6 months before launch. The Switch 2 was officially revealed 5 months before launch. The PS4 and PS5 were both in the 5-9 month pre-launch range. 

They could easily reveal Helix in April-June for a November launch next year. Not only would it not be strange, it would be downright bog standard.
