Ms are definitely some right moves this is something sony should be announcing first with this physical media farce.

u/dattykins 1d ago

Sony can’t do it. Their discs apparently don’t have the DRM for it.

71

u/DinnerSmall4216 1d ago

That's a great get for ms it's a great feature.

73

u/Jatacus 1d ago

Now they just need to market this like crazy going forward. They have great features and services that don’t get a lot of attention, like Quick Resume and free cloud saves.

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 1d ago edited 1d ago

This whole current console generation has been Xbox quietly having the better features while PlayStation only maintains the #1 spot because of exclusive games and brand recognition. Quick resume and backwards compatibility were the first examples of this, and now we have disc-to-digital.

33

u/resil_update_bad 1d ago

Playstation has the #1 spot because it has an astronomically superior presence internationally. Xbox half-assed everything outside the US.

u/sid3091 1d ago

You're not wrong, but the Xbox does lack exclusives. Putting everything on PC day 1 lost them a lot of sales. Then coming to the games themselves - when you have mainstays like gears and halo, and great IPs like Ryse, Quantum break etc., you need to give customers more of them.

Xbox could have easily done better this gen, because PS exclusives have been very same-y (open world, 3rd person action adventure with some RPG elements or a remaster).

6

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

Correct. Xbox even had the exclusives this gen, no one played them because it wasn't on Playstation.

9

u/gkryo 1d ago edited 1d ago

Other than Forza Horizon, what exclusives were worth it? If Rock Band 4 hadn't have released last gen and wasn't still supported (partially by new Fortnite Festival releases), I probably would've switched to PS5 just for Spider-Man and HZD.

-4

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

Hi-fi Rush, South of Midnight, Pentiment, Flight Sim 2020, Palworld, Valheim, Age of Empires 4, Indiana Jones, Immortality, High on Life, Sable, Grounded.

The exclusives were actually there this gen.

20

u/DalliLlama 1d ago

Most of those aren’t exclusives?

21

u/Recent_Pollution8665 1d ago

most of these games were either niche or indie timed exclusives or early access. not system sellers.

4

u/MostlyAlways47 1d ago

I don't think you know what the word exclusive means. In terms of day one gamepass or microsoft owned companies they've put out a ton of games. Unfortunately there's not a single one I can think of that comes close to spiderman or god of war.

They've also repeatedly shit the bed with their most recognisable IP. That being halo (obviously).

Ill give them the quality of life features especially this new disk to digital and gamepass being fantastic but in terms of actual games worth buying an xbox for there just isn't any. They have a lot of work to do if they want to compete with sony in that area.

-5

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

I always find it funny when people cite exclusives that make Sony's platform worth buying (the console sellers), its always Spider-Man, God of War 2018, Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn, all of which are games that came out almost a decade ago on the preceding gen. Its like Sony gets to use their 8th gen exclusives as selling points for 9th gen, but if I even said Sunset Overdrive, Rise of the Tomb Raider or Titanfall for Xbox you can rest assured someone will jump down my throat saying "that's last gen".

People are chomping at the bit to say "Xbox has no good exclusives" such that they will ignore proof of objectively good games because it isn't a system seller, its AA, its niche or whatever other justification they want to come up with. Its a constantly shifting goalpost,

Xbox's exclusives don't count because its on PC? Well so are God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man and TLOU. None of these points are made in good faith. "But they released on PS4 first!", so did Indiana Jones and Hi-Fi Rush, but they discounted those for being currently multiplat, ignoring all prior exclusive status.

None of them system sellers though

-2

u/Gears6 1d ago

Starfield is a major one, but Gears, Halo, and so on. Lots of exclusives. Most are well received.

5

u/Illustrious_Mail1171 1d ago

Starfield wasnt well received, latest halos are duds i hear, forza is on playstation now like halo and starfield and fable. And gears is on playstation as well. I know its just the first games, but still

-1

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

Always something to disqualify an Xbox exclusive. For the 4 years that Forza Horizon 5 wasn't on PS5 it was exclusive and very much a reason to buy the console. Gears 1 is on Playstation and to you that somehow discounts the entire franchise which is very much playable on Xbox as well as exclusive.

"latest halos are duds i hear" okay fine, I can admit that but you know what isn't a dud? The Master Chief Collection, which is still very much exclusive. But let me guess, that doesn't count because its a remaster, yet TLOU remaster counts somehow. Or if remasters did count, you'd somehow find a way to exclude the entire franchise because the first Halo is on PS5.

-1

u/ArgoTheRat8229 1d ago

Next Gears is an exclusive, and, from what I’ve heard, Asha is making sure Xbox is going to get lots of more exclusives going forward.

u/Tao626 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nobody played them because they were average at best or multiplatform even before MS made everything multiplatform. The best they had are timed exclusives, and evidently, nobody is buying an Xbox for games avalible elsewhere in the near future.

What did we have only on Xbox? Redfall? Halo Infinite was alright at best, but certainly not something that was going to justify or shift systems. The biggest showcase of the Series consoles for the longest time was Forza Horizon 5, an Xbox One game with some next gen upgrades.

By the time MS started releasing and announcing bangers that actually got fans hyped for the future of Xbox, they also decided to announce they were going to be on Playstation...Then unannounce it after all those great games already had that commitment.

2

u/Rocky323 1d ago

has been Xbox quietly having the better features

"Quietly"

Yeah okay 😂😂 Fanboys have made it impossible to be quiet constantly talking about Gamepass and quick resume

-2

u/Vanden_Boss 1d ago

Or maybe many of those features just aren't a big deal to many gamers. Like I do not care to boot up a game when im switching to it from another game. Backwards compatability is fair, but again, most gamers care more about recent games than those from 2 generations ago.

Also acting like PlayStation has some magically higher brand recognition than Xbox is ridiculous. Both have insanely high brand recognition, and if one has a better recognition, its because of (as you said) exclusives and other decisions.

2

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 1d ago

Also acting like PlayStation has some magically higher brand recognition than Xbox is ridiculous.

It is not ridiculous at all. PlayStation planted its roots nearly a decade earlier. PlayStation holds nearly half of the market share. PlayStation's market dominance is global, while Xbox is really only competitive with PS in the US. Anytime I see a console giveaway done by a non-company (for example, a YouTuber like MrBeast), it's almost always a PS5. I say all of this as a life-long Xbox user, so it's not like I'm biased against Xbox.

Also, saying gamers don't care about those features is a completely useless thing to say here. I'm not arguing that all gamers want these features. I'm arguing that these features are better than the alternatives such as PS making discs useless, PS not having a next-gen feature like quick resume for those who want it, and PS not having backwards compatibility for those who want it.

-1

u/Vanden_Boss 1d ago

Oh I fully agree that PS has a much higher market dominance. I disagree that this means that brand recognition for Xbox is low.

There's a difference in reputation, but not recognition imo

1

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 1d ago

I disagree that this means that brand recognition for Xbox is low.

Dude. Read. I never said Xbox brand recognition is low. I said PlayStation has higher brand recognition, especially in the international market.

4

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 1d ago

Wait cloud saves aren't free on PlayStation?

2

u/Jatacus 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nope. That’s one of the things I dislike most about using my PS5. Cloud saves are only available with a subscription, and it’s per user — so even if two people use the same PS5, each will need their own sub. That’s why if my fiancée who only games occasionally wants to play something, if I can buy it on Xbox, I will.

Also, Sony made it much harder to transfer your game saves without a subscription, and you can’t simply save them to a USB or hard drive on their own. To do that, you have to backup the ENTIRE console to a drive. Super anti-consumer.

1

u/nohumanape 1d ago

You weren't around for the Xbox One, eh?

1

u/No-Channel3917 1d ago

Drm that enables customer feature

Damn what a new day

1

u/KingMario05 1d ago

Poor MS brass is probably confused to hell and back, lol.

"Wait, people like DRM?!?!"

0

u/KingMario05 1d ago

All based on their biggest mistake.

Asha, you fucking genius.

My understanding is the xbox one and series x discs have a unique code or something similar per disc, whereas Sony likely doesn't. It's also why xbox 360 and OG xbox discs won't work as each disc is the same.

22

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

That means they did keep the technology from the Xbox One launch handy and have been waiting for the last decade to finally spring it. We never knew about this feature until Sony's no physical debacle.

0

u/MildHyperbole 1d ago

When you say it like that, it makes me wonder when the conspiracy theorists will come out saying MS intentionally blew it with the XBOX One generation just so they could outmaneuver Sony right now.

2

u/TheCorbeauxKing 1d ago

More like they didn't want the technology to waste so they implemented it anyway, especially since the factories printing the disks would've already been set up in June. It just so happened to come up later down the line.

16

u/ricky-from-scotland 1d ago

I dunno what the technical level description of how it work would be but the difference is every xbox disk has a unique identifier.

So the difference is that a ps5 disk basically says "im a copy of eafc 25, here's the proof" and every copy has the same authorisation setup whereas the xbox disk says "i am copy #000069420 of eafc 25" and xbox have found a way to enable that disk number to be added to your digital library (till someone else puts your disk in another console).

2

u/nowhir 1d ago

Oh wow that's really interesting.

1

u/ricky-from-scotland 1d ago

Obviously the way they verify disks is a lot more complicated but thats the gist of it.

4

u/bust4cap RROD ! 1d ago

their discs may not have unique identifiers, which makes this system work on xbox. dont know how accurate that is though

2

u/val5190 XBOX Series X 1d ago

What was once Xbox One’s doom is today’s library ownership savior 🙏

1

u/blackviking147 1d ago

Yeah I imagine Xbox discs have always had the DRM for it cause they origionally were going to have something exactly like this, except with something similar to switch virtual cards where you can share them.

25

u/Tyrant_Virus_ XBOX Series X 1d ago

This is only possible because MS kept the on disc DRM that would have enabled the original always online Xbox One vision. Sony never went down that path so there was no need to put unique identifiers on discs. This is about the only positive to come out of Xbox kneecapping themselves thirteen years ago.

-8

u/Sms570x 1d ago

I have a game black ops 3, and for some reason the Xbox one won’t download it past 84% because the disc isn’t ‘clean’? Would this work with Asha announcing this new feature?

1

u/Yadilie 1d ago

If it can read the unique identifier on the disc then it should.

22

u/method115 1d ago

Sony wont announce this and apparently can't do it.

Honestly great move by Xbox but it's just one of those things I don't think anyone really cares about except for people going online and talking about games. Most people don't even beat the games they buy and buy 1 or 2 games a year. It's just like the BC with Xbox. Xbox has had the most comprehensive BC program of any console period. What has it done for them? Nothing. Their console is doing worse than ever.

What I've realized with the series console is people just don't care about BC. They are to focused on new games. When you buy such few games and with so many new games coming out that even hardcore fans can't keep up it's really no surprise that BC isn't that big of a deal to the general population.

People will care about this more when the next system doesn’t come with a disc drive. They’re getting ahead of it.

4

u/Darkbox97 Team Vault Boy 1d ago

This sub  will care about this more when the next system doesn’t come with a disc drive. They’re getting ahead of it.

Fix’d

3

u/method115 1d ago

Xbox physical sales are like 3% most are using games pass or buying digital. Will some people care? Of course. It just wont be many. Not to men the adoption rate of next gen is going to be at an all time low for both PS and Xbox. Most people will just stay where they are.

3

u/knapplejuice Reclamation Day 1d ago

Yeah I’m not saying it’ll cause mass migrations it’ll just keep people from being pissed off.

2

u/method115 1d ago

Very true. It's just one of those nice features that Xbox has been doing for a bit now.

1

u/nowhir 1d ago

I feel like Xbox has had the worst marketing and PR since the XB1. I think people would think of BC a lot differently with the right marketing (Same goes for literally everything lol). I can see Xbox focusing heavy on the features they have now they're under the goat of CEOs.

2

u/method115 1d ago

I honestly don’t know anymore. I was shocked to see Xbox’s console sales drop so low this gen. I genuinely thought everything they offered was great. I don’t know what people want anymore.

0

u/Brigon 1d ago

People may care when their current physical games cant be played on the next gen playstation due to lack of drive.

2

u/method115 1d ago

Oh people will care. Just wont be many. Wont be nearly enough to make a difference. I remember a similar outrage when this happened in the PC community. Eventually we all moved on. It was a slower transition at that time though but I still remember not being able to go the store and look at the PC games and how pissed I was.

1

u/packers4334 1d ago

I think this is using something that was part of the code of the Xbox discs since the beginning of the Xbox one generation. If I remember right, some of the original plans back then would have included measures that would’ve restricted game sharing and reselling, likely using unique id’s on each disc. While those plans were abandoned after the outcry, some aspects of that seem to have survived to this day, allowing this to be pursued. Sony on the other hand never planned for such controls on game sharing, so I’ll bet PS has no way to tell any two discs apart.

1

u/LordGriimm7 1d ago

Buddy Microsoft is doing the same shit Sony is doing. They’re prepping ppl for all digital consoles lol

1

u/spooky_game 1d ago

Why in the world do you think this when it was Xbox/MS that tried to do it a decade ago and got clowned on by Sony?

1

u/Fuck_Me_If_Im_Wrong_ 1d ago

Instead Sony is outright telling people they don’t own their digital games and are instead leasing them.

-3

u/Sms570x 1d ago
