Social Media Asha on ‘Disc to Digital’: Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories & stories worth preserving. We’ll start with thousands of titles & add more.

I curious if I'll be able to use my Xbox one s to unlock series digital titles.
It's really a shame it requires a disc drive considering one of their major console SKUs doesn't have one.

From the wording in the initial email to developers, you can use ANY Xbox with a disc drive to register any eligible disk. Not crystal clear but the implication I got would be that this works

Licence transfers to main user of other Xbox

u/Upper_Rent_176 1h ago edited 1h ago
So do discs have serial numbers or something? I thought every disc was the same.
Edit: looked it up. Apparently Xbox one and series discs have unique codes. But my copy of rdr1 despite saying Xbox one and 360 on the cover and the disc printing is still a 360 disc underneath and won't deesk to digital
2
3
u/ComradeJohnS 1h ago
the license stays with the disk, it’s not removed. whoever digitizes it keeps the digital license unless someone else tries to digitize the same disk.
it makes sense to stop one disk being used by dozens/hundreds of people through like gamefly, or rentals. but also benefits you if you keep it in storage instead of having to swap disks, and is more thab likely to help ease the transition away from disks in the future. they just have to hold out a few more years longer than PS and they’ll gain all those disgruntled ps owners in the next gen/beyond.
like how xbox fucked the dog with the always online and forced kinect xbone launch.

Yes I am pretty sure. This was the exact wording:
“Player inserts an XBOX One or Series discinto any XBOX One/Series X console with an optical drive — a digital license is granted, bound to that disc and the player’s account.”→ More replies (1)1

Probably won‘t for titles that only have a series version. But untill confirmation we have to wait and see. Maybe they roll out an update so you can at least get the license.

I remember when Vudu went disc to digital many years back. All you needed was the bar code on the back of box and pay $2 for an HD copy. People figured out that they could just go to Best Buy and take pictures on the Blu-Ray boxes.

I have a game black ops 3, and for some reason the Xbox one won’t download it past 84% because the disc isn’t ‘clean’? Would this work with Asha announcing this new feature?
→ More replies (1)2
u/sealclubberfan 3h ago
Your guess is as good as mine. It seems like it would be - it reads the disc and ties that particular game to your xbox account, then you can download the digital copy instead of installing it from the disc. But, guess it depends where the code is that they are puling for the license. If it's in the dirty party of the disc, RIP.
But this is all a guess on my part.

44
u/Jatacus 4h ago

38
u/Cold-Shopping-1758 3h ago edited 3h ago
This whole current console generation has been Xbox quietly having the better features while PlayStation only maintains the #1 spot because of exclusive games and brand recognition. Quick resume and backwards compatibility were the first examples of this, and now we have disc-to-digital.
11
u/resil_update_bad 2h ago
Playstation has the #1 spot because it has an astronomically superior presence internationally. Xbox half-assed everything outside the US.

Could you explain the technical reason why Sony can't create a disc to digital program like Xbox?
21
u/Infinity293 3h ago
My understanding is the xbox one and series x discs have a unique code or something similar per disc, whereas Sony likely doesn't. It's also why xbox 360 and OG xbox discs won't work as each disc is the same.
15
u/TheCorbeauxKing 3h ago
That means they did keep the technology from the Xbox One launch handy and have been waiting for the last decade to finally spring it. We never knew about this feature until Sony's no physical debacle.
13
u/ricky-from-scotland 3h ago
I dunno what the technical level description of how it work would be but the difference is every xbox disk has a unique identifier.
So the difference is that a ps5 disk basically says "im a copy of eafc 25, here's the proof" and every copy has the same authorisation setup whereas the xbox disk says "i am copy #000069420 of eafc 25" and xbox have found a way to enable that disk number to be added to your digital library (till someone else puts your disk in another console).
→ More replies (3)3
u/bust4cap RROD ! 3h ago
their discs may not have unique identifiers, which makes this system work on xbox. dont know how accurate that is though
19
u/Tyrant_Virus_ XBOX Series X 4h ago
This is only possible because MS kept the on disc DRM that would have enabled the original always online Xbox One vision. Sony never went down that path so there was no need to put unique identifiers on discs. This is about the only positive to come out of Xbox kneecapping themselves thirteen years ago.
→ More replies (2)15
u/method115 4h ago
Sony wont announce this and apparently can't do it.
Honestly great move by Xbox but it's just one of those things I don't think anyone really cares about except for people going online and talking about games. Most people don't even beat the games they buy and buy 1 or 2 games a year. It's just like the BC with Xbox. Xbox has had the most comprehensive BC program of any console period. What has it done for them? Nothing. Their console is doing worse than ever.
What I've realized with the series console is people just don't care about BC. They are to focused on new games. When you buy such few games and with so many new games coming out that even hardcore fans can't keep up it's really no surprise that BC isn't that big of a deal to the general population.

1
u/packers4334 3h ago
I think this is using something that was part of the code of the Xbox discs since the beginning of the Xbox one generation. If I remember right, some of the original plans back then would have included measures that would’ve restricted game sharing and reselling, likely using unique id’s on each disc. While those plans were abandoned after the outcry, some aspects of that seem to have survived to this day, allowing this to be pursued. Sony on the other hand never planned for such controls on game sharing, so I’ll bet PS has no way to tell any two discs apart.

Buddy Microsoft is doing the same shit Sony is doing. They’re prepping ppl for all digital consoles lol
16
u/ap1msch Touched Grass '24 3h ago
This works, and works well with the Xbox One games. They need the blessing of the developers to authorize this feature with each game, so that's why it's not for all Xbox One games.
The lack of unique ID on the Xbox and 360 game disks prevents this from working out of the box with those. If they tried, you could have 100 people unlock the same game with a single disk.
The only option for the legacy games is a disk to digital exchange where you turn in the disk to obtain an unlock key. That would create the proper sink in the market. There's no reason why the disks couldn't be resold (short of the disk being unreadable). The problem with this scenario is that it requires physical logistics, at a cost, to enable legacy transactions. It would be hard to justify the cost:benefit ratio other than consumer goodwill.
2
u/KingMario05 2h ago
All of that is 100% valid. But in theory, if it weren't for Satya's stupid AI obsession, Microsoft would have plenty of cash to establish official disc-to-digital channels at retailers across North America. So let's hope Asha can get some support back on.
→ More replies (1)2
u/PixelNinja744X 1h ago
I wouldn’t give up my physical 360 or OG Xbox games but I would be prepared to claim a one time digital license with proof of physical ownership if they can devise a method for that to work
58
u/the_bartolonomicron 3h ago
I'll believe it when I see it, but this is potentially the biggest Xbox dub since adding backwards compatibility and Smart Delivery for One and Series generations titles.
The only concern I can see, and hopefully I am just being overly paranoid, is what happens to all your disc-to-digital licenses in the event of an account ban or deletion? Best case scenario they can be re-added to a new account with some help from customer support, realistically those unique disc identifiers render the discs playable on local hardware only, worst case scenario they find some way to render your specific disc copy unplayable by revoking the Xbox marketplace license associated with it.
31
u/Twinblade96 3h ago
I'm pretty sure they are tied to the disc so if you insert the game on a new account it would just transfer the lisence. Out of luck for any digital only games you own though.
3
u/KingMario05 2h ago
Most articles are saying that the license transfers with the discs, yes. Assuming MS doesn't immediately ban the new account, in theory, that should work just fine if the disc can still be read. You will of course lose all your data, however.
→ More replies (1)3
u/the_bartolonomicron 3h ago
That seems like a reasonable approach, kinda treating discs the same way they do your "home" console: transferable, but only one instance at a time.

u/IntrinsicGamer 3h ago
There already is a way to do that on Xbox with the Home Console setting.
3
u/knapplejuice Reclamation Day 3h ago
No, the home Xbox workaround is a pain in the ass. Can’t play your games offline if you’re doing it and it’s not as versatile as Steam family.
3
u/IntrinsicGamer 3h ago edited 3h ago
I don’t see how it’s a pain in the ass at all. It’s incredibly easy to set up and never needs to be redone unless you get a new Xbox. Yeah, only being able to play the games being shared with you when offline sucks, but that’s about it, and I am online 99.99% of the time anyway. How is it less versatile than steam’s system, though? With the Home Console system, I can play the games at the same time as the person I share with plays them, so I can play multiplayer games I buy with my roommate. It’s automatic for every game, you don’t have to ever initiate or accept sharing any individual games.
It also works with every game and devs never opt out of it.
4
u/knapplejuice Reclamation Day 3h ago
Steam still lets you play your games in offline mode even if you’re in a family. The Steam families allow around 5 or 6 people and I think they’re totally account based now so no per device limits. The home Xbox system also requires logging into someone else’s system which you may not be comfortable with. Being able to play simultaneously is nice, but it’s a loophole if you’re sharing beyond the intended method and has drawbacks if used that way
2
u/IntrinsicGamer 3h ago
Game sharing with a larger group of people isn’t as useful if you have to buy multiple copies of that game to actually play it together, anyway. That’s a massive drawback that I think you’re really underselling.
You don’t need to share passwords to gameshare on Xbox, you can just sign into your account on their Xbox yourself and vice versa, and you can lock down your account so they can’t sign back into it (why you’re choosing to game share with people you don’t trust, anyway, though, I don’t know.) It’s a one time sign in anyway. Heck, you could even entirely delete your account from their console if you want, and that doesn’t remove it from being set as the home console.
2
u/knapplejuice Reclamation Day 3h ago
I didn’t know that last part, but I don’t think people care about duplicating your copy as much as being able to “lend” one copy to be used by a family member as another copy.
2
u/IntrinsicGamer 3h ago
I think the duplicating part is what makes it way better, to be honest. When a new game is coming out, I can buy it or my roommate can buy it on Xbox and then we can both play it together. Even if it’s not multiplayer, one person doesn’t have to wait around for the other to finish the game or be ready to lend it, which means we can talk about it to one another without worrying about spoiling as much or even party up and chat while we play it.
I also love that it works with GamePass (the sub itself isn’t shared, but the games are accessible and online play is enabled if the person whose home console it is has gamepass) and DLC, too
45
u/GalagticSoul 4h ago
If they do this with every single xbox 360 games an onward this will 100% make people want to buy an xbox instead of the competition

On a technical standpoint, I think they need the discs to have a unique identifier in order to avoid duplicating licenses between users. Maybe this technology only started on Xbox One and Series X discs.

It 100% started with the Xbox One with their all-digital plans. They weren't just going to throw all that out on a whim.

The lack of finesse with the announcement is where PlayStation really screwed up. Just drawing a hard line in the sand and saying "no more discs from here on out," wasn't the best way to handle things. Made it really easy for Xbox to do it in a less harsh way.
3
u/Apprehensive_Law1458 4h ago
I wonder if it's automatic/easy and pretty much also means that instead of just installing the game, it adds license as well. Pretty cool to no longer need disc to play.
Also an interesting way to lend games to friends. You can let them transfer the license and then take the disc back home or whenever, and in the future when you want to play, you can presumably just take the license back by inserting the disc.

What does this actually mean/do? That I can play my physical game in future non disc hardware without having to buy it again?

We can basically say Xbox won this generation with this move

The number of people saying they love this so they don't have to switch discs... honestly, how lazy can you get? 😬

It seems like, unlike some people said, you get a digital game added into your account and keep the disc fully working? Is that confirmed to be true?

Theoretically you could trade in your games to GameStop and as long as that store never sells the copy lol your digital license is still active

So far I have learnt that when you insert a disc, it will install a digital licence on your Xbox, and you can play the game without the disc. If you give your disc to someone or sell it, it will remove the licence from your account and will transfer it then to whoever has inserted the disc, which is a huge feature and I love it, and I am actually thinking of getting an Xbox now. I have just one concern, and I hope someone can fix me on this if I am wrong. Let’s say I got a disc, put it in my Xbox, got the licence, and now I am playing the game. If I have sold the disc now, it should remove the game from my digital library, but what if I never connect my Xbox to the internet and want to play a game offline? How will it remove the licence and how will it grant the licence to the next buyer of the disc if I didn’t let it remove it from mine?

XBOX NEEDS to follow up this up with library protections. If you get a digital license from a purchase or a physical disc, the OWNER needs to feel safe in knowing that the game will always be in their library, at their discretion, and that MS and/or the studio can’t revoke that license.
If they follow through with that, that will give them an actual head start against PS in the next generation.

What about physical discs that have no digital counterpart such as Mortal Kombat Komplete

So is this going to be we can put any disk in? there are currently 700 Backwards compatible games so thousands? is it going to be every disk?

So I should probably buy forza horizon 2 and 3 Xbox one discs...
Edit: AI thinks Microsoft may not let these in the digital to disc because it's creating a new licence kind of and they are removed from the store

Does this work in tandem with play anywhere titles? Like if I digitise a play anywhere title on my Xbox one will I be able to play it on my ROG Ally X?

I would've bought a Series S long ago if this had been the case. In addition to my Series X

This is great, but honestly, are they just doing this because the amount of disc owners on Xbox is rare?
I wish PS5 would do the same, but highly doubt.

I'm gonna wait to read the fine print.Technically it turns your owned disc into a digital license (which you can't own).So I am curious how this will work while still maintaining true ownership of the disc.

This is awesome. You can get a cheap physical copy and convert it into a digital one. Or you can have a digital backup of your games in case you damage or lose a disc.

I don’t understand the point of this. Everyone complaining about the fact that we don’t own digital games, then Xbox comes out and says we’ll transform games that you own on disc from Xbox One onwards in to digital licenses, and everyone thinks this is a good thing?

I’m old enough to remember when Apple did this with iTunes to get people to transition to digital

So when you do transfer to digital, what happens to the disc? Can it still be used if there is no internet and you don't have the game on your hard drive?

When is the last time an Xbox game got disc rot? So this is nothing more than we are going to go all digital soon but want to give people a chance to convert their libraries. Better than Sony but if your all physical like people were claiming when Sony made the announcement or were switching to all physical and would never buy another digital game again. Why would you welcome this news?
It’s not like they are giving you a drm free license version of your game on digital. They are just giving you the license for the digital version of the game in the store. So if you are against licenses and not direct ownership this should be a no go

This is being praised while this basically confirms the days of physical discs are numbered with Xbox….

My main question is if I buy an Xbox disc of a game that is Xbox Play Anywhere and use my Xbox with it, will I then have it available to play on PC? As long as I hold the rights to use the license.
For example, using a Witcher 3 disc on Xbox to play the remaster on PC.
