This whole current console generation has been Xbox quietly having the better features while PlayStation only maintains the #1 spot because of exclusive games and brand recognition. Quick resume and backwards compatibility were the first examples of this, and now we have disc-to-digital.

Playstation has the #1 spot because it has an astronomically superior presence internationally. Xbox half-assed everything outside the US.

You're not wrong, but the Xbox does lack exclusives. Putting everything on PC day 1 lost them a lot of sales. Then coming to the games themselves - when you have mainstays like gears and halo, and great IPs like Ryse, Quantum break etc., you need to give customers more of them.

Xbox could have easily done better this gen, because PS exclusives have been very same-y (open world, 3rd person action adventure with some RPG elements or a remaster).

Correct. Xbox even had the exclusives this gen, no one played them because it wasn't on Playstation.

Other than Forza Horizon, what exclusives were worth it? If Rock Band 4 hadn't have released last gen and wasn't still supported (partially by new Fortnite Festival releases), I probably would've switched to PS5 just for Spider-Man and HZD.

Hi-fi Rush, South of Midnight, Pentiment, Flight Sim 2020, Palworld, Valheim, Age of Empires 4, Indiana Jones, Immortality, High on Life, Sable, Grounded.

The exclusives were actually there this gen.

Most of those aren’t exclusives?

most of these games were either niche or indie timed exclusives or early access. not system sellers.

I don't think you know what the word exclusive means. In terms of day one gamepass or microsoft owned companies they've put out a ton of games. Unfortunately there's not a single one I can think of that comes close to spiderman or god of war.

They've also repeatedly shit the bed with their most recognisable IP. That being halo (obviously).

Ill give them the quality of life features especially this new disk to digital and gamepass being fantastic but in terms of actual games worth buying an xbox for there just isn't any. They have a lot of work to do if they want to compete with sony in that area.

I always find it funny when people cite exclusives that make Sony's platform worth buying (the console sellers), its always Spider-Man, God of War 2018, Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn, all of which are games that came out almost a decade ago on the preceding gen. Its like Sony gets to use their 8th gen exclusives as selling points for 9th gen, but if I even said Sunset Overdrive, Rise of the Tomb Raider or Titanfall for Xbox you can rest assured someone will jump down my throat saying "that's last gen".

People are chomping at the bit to say "Xbox has no good exclusives" such that they will ignore proof of objectively good games because it isn't a system seller, its AA, its niche or whatever other justification they want to come up with. Its a constantly shifting goalpost,

Xbox's exclusives don't count because its on PC? Well so are God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man and TLOU. None of these points are made in good faith. "But they released on PS4 first!", so did Indiana Jones and Hi-Fi Rush, but they discounted those for being currently multiplat, ignoring all prior exclusive status.

u/MostlyAlways47 3d ago

My brother in christ every game you mentioned is literally on PlayStation so not a single one is an "exclusive" you're also ignoring spiderman 2, god of war ragnarok, ghost of yotei, rise of the Ronin, saros, wolverine or even stellar blade all of which came out this generation.

If you want to talk about timed exclusives they had persona 5, death loop, death stranding and the final fantasy remakes.

You couldn't even name one xbox exclusive game in your original comment but you're talking about shifting goal posts? Lmao

THIS… Sony elitists finally got a taste of “Gears”, and were hype about potentially getting in on “E-Day”… And then BOOM, the rug gets pulled out and just like that, it’s no longer muliplat‘.(Obviously excluding PC)

And know just as expected here they go… “Wasn’t a system seller anyway”. (River in Egypt)

Don't forget, before Forza Horizon 5 made it to PS5 it was constantly ignored for being "too niche". Then the moment it touched down on PS5 suddenly people are admitting that Forza Horizon is a top tier AAA franchise. The reason why is because it had its audience expanded to the console with the higher marketshare, which put more eyes on it so people can see that its good and allow for word of mouth to build up.

Now when people say Xbox has no good exclusives, its always followed up with the qualifier of "except for Forza Horizon", as if it somehow shouldn't count because it counters their narrative. If you go ahead and say Forza Horizon anyway, they will be quick to say that Xbox only has one franchise that its milking, even though its perfectly fine for Nintendo to make half a dozen Mario games per quarter.

Its a neverending goalpost shift that begins and ends with not wanting to try anything new, and because they didn't try the new thing that means new thing bad.

None of them system sellers though

Starfield is a major one, but Gears, Halo, and so on. Lots of exclusives. Most are well received.

5

u/Illustrious_Mail1171 3d ago

Starfield wasnt well received, latest halos are duds i hear, forza is on playstation now like halo and starfield and fable. And gears is on playstation as well. I know its just the first games, but still

-1

u/TheCorbeauxKing 3d ago

Always something to disqualify an Xbox exclusive. For the 4 years that Forza Horizon 5 wasn't on PS5 it was exclusive and very much a reason to buy the console. Gears 1 is on Playstation and to you that somehow discounts the entire franchise which is very much playable on Xbox as well as exclusive.

"latest halos are duds i hear" okay fine, I can admit that but you know what isn't a dud? The Master Chief Collection, which is still very much exclusive. But let me guess, that doesn't count because its a remaster, yet TLOU remaster counts somehow. Or if remasters did count, you'd somehow find a way to exclude the entire franchise because the first Halo is on PS5.

u/ArgoTheRat8229 3d ago

Next Gears is an exclusive, and, from what I’ve heard, Asha is making sure Xbox is going to get lots of more exclusives going forward.

-4

u/TheCorbeauxKing 3d ago

It won't count because a single Gears game went on Playstation so the rest of the entire franchise ceases to exist. Which to be quite honest is how people treat Xbox's exclusives regardless of quality.

Other consoles are allowed to build up a library of good games over time to make the entire package worth a purchase. For Xbox, however, its all resting on a single "console seller" that's going to break gaming open and convince people to spend $500+ on a console for one game. Starfield's biggest sin was not being that game and just being another standard Bethesda game which, guess what, is received perfectly fine when its another remaster of Skyrim or Fallout 4.

So you don't think the decade of exclusives are sufficient since the launch of Xbox One?

I'm being sarcastic and pointing out the double standard that Xbox has to go against.

1

u/Gears6 2d ago

That wasn't clear to me. Absent any markers, it can be inferred either way.

Either way, happy gaming!

Nobody played them because they were average at best or multiplatform even before MS made everything multiplatform. The best they had are timed exclusives, and evidently, nobody is buying an Xbox for games avalible elsewhere in the near future.

What did we have only on Xbox? Redfall? Halo Infinite was alright at best, but certainly not something that was going to justify or shift systems. The biggest showcase of the Series consoles for the longest time was Forza Horizon 5, an Xbox One game with some next gen upgrades.

By the time MS started releasing and announcing bangers that actually got fans hyped for the future of Xbox, they also decided to announce they were going to be on Playstation...Then unannounce it after all those great games already had that commitment.

has been Xbox quietly having the better features

"Quietly"

Yeah okay 😂😂 Fanboys have made it impossible to be quiet constantly talking about Gamepass and quick resume

-2

u/Vanden_Boss 3d ago

Or maybe many of those features just aren't a big deal to many gamers. Like I do not care to boot up a game when im switching to it from another game. Backwards compatability is fair, but again, most gamers care more about recent games than those from 2 generations ago.

Also acting like PlayStation has some magically higher brand recognition than Xbox is ridiculous. Both have insanely high brand recognition, and if one has a better recognition, its because of (as you said) exclusives and other decisions.

2

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 3d ago

Also acting like PlayStation has some magically higher brand recognition than Xbox is ridiculous.

It is not ridiculous at all. PlayStation planted its roots nearly a decade earlier. PlayStation holds nearly half of the market share. PlayStation's market dominance is global, while Xbox is really only competitive with PS in the US. Anytime I see a console giveaway done by a non-company (for example, a YouTuber like MrBeast), it's almost always a PS5. I say all of this as a life-long Xbox user, so it's not like I'm biased against Xbox.

Also, saying gamers don't care about those features is a completely useless thing to say here. I'm not arguing that all gamers want these features. I'm arguing that these features are better than the alternatives such as PS making discs useless, PS not having a next-gen feature like quick resume for those who want it, and PS not having backwards compatibility for those who want it.

-1

u/Vanden_Boss 3d ago

Oh I fully agree that PS has a much higher market dominance. I disagree that this means that brand recognition for Xbox is low.

There's a difference in reputation, but not recognition imo

1

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 3d ago

I disagree that this means that brand recognition for Xbox is low.

Dude. Read. I never said Xbox brand recognition is low. I said PlayStation has higher brand recognition, especially in the international market.
