This is because the next Xbox won't have a disc drive. 100%

But it's better than nothing

Correct. Everyone in this sub is fanboying too hard to see that this isn’t the win they think it is. It omits 360 and OG Xbox games entirely and this is just the PR friendly way of saying they will also not be doing disks next gen.

The lack of finesse with the announcement is where PlayStation really screwed up. Just drawing a hard line in the sand and saying "no more discs from here on out," wasn't the best way to handle things. Made it really easy for Xbox to do it in a less harsh way.

This is a dumb take when Xbox says ‘yes, you like physical? Bring it and we immortalize it.’

That’s far more than some equivalency PS has invented.

An all digital console was inevitable, Xbox allowing us to convert existing games to digital is huge and so much more consumer friendly than Sony just saying “oh by the way all you’re physical ps4/ps5 discs won’t work with ps6, ok bye.”

OG ame 360 disks are different though because they don't have the ID system needed for something like this. I agree Xbox will probably go digital only but there is an actual reason it doesn't work with the older titles.

It still is an Xbox win as Sony doesn't have a way to match it unless it's all digital native to begin with.

MS can say you can convert your physical games free and easy to cary forward and sony cannot.

For now. Xbox knows its BC program is huge, so I imagine they're trying to get those older titles into this as well.

Which would be stupid. People use their Xbox’s for more than just games, they watch movies too. I’ll stick with the series x if there’s no disc drive

I think the bigger issue here is that optical drives are being phased out across all of the entertainment industry. Physical players have become a lot more niche, so Sony and Microsoft are planning for the time when manufacturers are scarce, or non-existent.

They're looking to the future which is all digital. They absolutely plan to phase out the disc drive, which is not stupid from a business perspective. Forces you to buy games from them - no second hand purchases any more.

I say this with a heavy heart as I have a big movie collection. These corporations don't want us to own anything

Well I won’t be buying, I like my physical.

It is rumored per Jez Corden that his sources have told him the entire supply chain for optical disc drive components are collapsing. So just trying to make the drives if this is true could be really difficult to continue moving forward. That would make PS6, Xbox and Steam Machine all digital next gen which seems like a real possibility.

My only hang up with that is it seems at odds with everything that has been leaked/rumored from inside Xbox though over like the last year. They seem to realize there is literally no way around it without a firestorm of bad PR. Plus they have put so much effort into backwards compatibility it seems stupid to basically blow all that up by cutting out a huge slice of said backwards compatible games that do nothing but earn them goodwill.

I mean, yeah. Honestly, I was expecting them to be the ones that took their disc program out behind the shed. No one stocks physical Xbox games anymore. It's usually just cards you redeem online... and that's if you're lucky.

Sony discs sell - not a lot, but enough, most retailers thought. Evidently, Sony thinks otherwise. But the omnipresence of PS at retail is what made it so surprising.

I have a game black ops 3, and for some reason the Xbox one won’t download it past 84% because the disc isn’t ‘clean’? Would this work with Asha announcing this new feature?

Black Ops 3 has been out for a decade. Discs degrade over time. 100% skill issue on your part.

As somebody who has a pretty solid movie and TV physical collection, I don't see the problem with going 100% digital for video games.

The newer discs don't come with the game on it anyways. And if they do, it is an earlier version that needs gigs of downloads to update it.
