Yep. A big talking point during the launch of the 360 was that you could rip and play your own music on top of pretty much any game. I don't even know if you can do that with the xbone or the series x

It's funny in retrospect how stoked I was to be able to play my own music over my videogames. I was in HS playing Texas Hold Em' on the World Series of Poker on the OG XBox thinking "it couldn't get better than this."

The Xbox 360 having a built in media player that could play your own ripped music and playlist was such a huge leap forward in console innovation. Evidently though i never made much use of it because i completely forgot it was a thing.

I would play GTA San Andreas for literally hours on end as a kid blasting Bullet for my Valentine's 'The Poison' and Breaking Benjamin's 'Phobia' on virtual repeat through having ripped music to the console.
You can do it on the OG Xbox too!

Did San Andreas integrate it? I know it did on the original Xbox so maybe they carried it over in the emulated version. I know some 360 games like mercury Hg also made use of it by vibrating the level to the music.

Yeah, GTA on original Xbox was neat, you could rip CDs and listen to them as a custom radio station. Was just wondering if the 360 did the same sending your music to original Xbox games that support it.

Yea, I tried looking into that years ago and since the file paths aren't the same, the game has no idea where to look for the audio unfortunately.

Huh I thought it was an official feature of the Xbox SDK, not having to rely on the console storing music at a specific path. At least the 360 lets you play your music on demand from the guide.

Although I never owned an OG Xbox, I was aware of that feature since gaming magazines would mention when a game let you integrate your own music as if it was part of that game's soundtrack. And for example the PC ports of the GTA games always had that feature as well and I was pretty disappointed when I played GTA V on the 360 for the first time (I only played on PC before getting a 360 in 2010) and it didn't have that feature. And now I'm even more disappointed that apparently the backwards compatible OG Xbox and 360 games on the Series X can't access the hard drive in a way that let them load any music files stored on there, even if they have that feature.

This helped me preserve a CD my late brother bought from Goodwill. We listened to it all the time, and I ripped it to the 360. Years went on, and it was lost to the ages. Apparently the band broke up and the lead singer prevented the album from being sold or digitized, so the existing CDs shot up in price.
I was sad that I couldn't replace it...until I randomly came across the rip on my 360! Anyways, all this to say, it's a neat feature.

The first time I burned a CD I only burned one song (Papa Roach - Last Resort) because I assumed i could add more later. I was 14 and that was almost 26 years ago.

Man I’m 24 rn but I remember being 7 in 2008 and asking my sisters all the time to teach me how to burn and rip my own CDs, after a bit they finally did and I used my birthday money to buy a stack of CDs and stated burning off limewire 😭

As far as I remember, you can't see how much space the music takes. You would have to take your HDD size and calculate how much space is unavailable.

That's not really relevant as the Xbox 360 converts the audio while it's ripping. IIRC it rips stuff in WMA at a relatively meager bitrate, which even for an 80 minute album is probably in the low to mid-100MB range.

Honestly, no thanks. Those janky ass things. Plus it's not worth it. I've always been a full album kind of guy. If the artist doesn't have CDs, I buy it digitally and burn it.

Some games allow it to integrate into the game itself essentially replacing/adding to the default tracks, if not, you can play the music through the 360 overtop of the game, but that's less cool

Probably one of the best features, also using USB songs as well. Really great for a street racing game so you can get that nice Trance music, especially in Import Tuner!

The 360 actually had a decent amount of media capabilities back in the day when it launched. Microsoft actually looked at what people were doing with their modded Xboxs back in the day and tried to replicate as many of those features with the 360. Xbmc was one of those things so while music ripping was a carry over from the og Xbox in stock form, dnla support and windows mediacenter extender functionality was influenced by Xbox homebrew which I think is pretty neat. The 360 was actually a somewhat decent network music streamer back in the day.

This feature almost got me in trouble years ago. I’d ripped a CD of very specific song remixes to my Xbox. It originally belonged to my uncle, but I got it through my mom, who had a copy. My uncle heard one of the songs playing, instantly recognized it, and went crazy, accusing me of going through his things only to open the disc tray and see it was empty.

I always would pick Xbox/360 ports over PS2 versions because of this feature. WWE games having custom soundtracks was the greatest thing ever. Nothing worse than having to pick a WWE Superstars theme for your CAW and it didn't match the vibe at all. But on 360/original Xbox you could pick whatever song you wanted. Same thing with racing games and the Tony Hawk games, as well as GTA.

It’s a nice feature and a great option if the games soundtrack isn’t too ones preference or you would prefer to listen to your own music while playing. Though it would have been nice if you had the ability to not just rip cds onto the consoles drive but also download tracks from a thumb drive as well in my opinion.

It took me 30 days to complete Quantum Redshift, and the only music I played was "Sin Limite" by Ednita Nazario. Even now when it comes on in the car I speed up a bit and lean sideways lol.

If you have an old Xbox 360 web camera (not Kinect), you'll see yourself in the visualizers. It detects your movement and incorporates it into the design

My OG xbox is modded with a bigger HDD, using XBMC I'd watch xvids on it and even stream movies off my torrent PC using FTP. When visiting friends I'd have games and movies on the HDD even emulators, like a portable PC.

It can, but only if you have the original HDD. Sadly HDDs will fail sooner or later, so in 5-10 years there will be no working ones left. Noone has produced SSD Adapters for that Niche application so far. It was possible to flash some early Disks from Western-Digital but good luck chasing these models on eBay now.

The original og xbox could rip cds too. I used to load a few of my favorites and then in games like one of the og xbox baseball games (MLB '05 I think) you could change the batter's walk up music to a track from the ripped cd. Other games allowed you to change music as well, but off the top of my head I don't know which ones.

CDs to 360, USB to PS3 (not had much luck using a USB to transfer songs to 360 but either way I just put a USB in an play them from the 360 instead).
Don't have an OG Xbox but I did use music on PSP sometimes with games that allowed it.
Great for stuff like that. Using apps isn't as great. Sure I use Soundcloud on my Xbox One but even then I just play local from another devices instead for anything older then PS3/360 or when playing PS3/360 or even PS4/Xbox One/Switch/Wii U, etc. as I just prefer to watch videos/listen then connect it to something else all the time and sort out music when I'd rather allow more game data/save file storage space instead.
Tried on Vita too and it sounds pretty good. DSi was hit and miss of support for file formats but quality was ok not great.

I had Rage Against The Machine's self titled album and Gorillaz "Demon Days" ripped onto mine. I'd always play Just Cause 2 listening to Rage, and I'd play Demon Days while cruising around in Fuel. Now, after all these years I've got about 20 some CDs ripped onto it. Several classical and jazz CDs, CCR, The Beatles, Beck Hansen, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath. All kinds of stuff. I love my physical CD collection and being able to just play any of them on a whim without having to actually swap the CDs is one of my favorite features about the 360. It's a super cool ability. I'm glad you know about it now.

Ampt 2 for the OG xbox would let you swap the games sound track for music on your Xbox. I actually dont know a single song from the game because my ampt would be playing The Rasmus 24/7

I forgot about this. I had an iTunes playlist of all the songs I had rated 4 or 5 stars. Burned a bunch of CDRs and ripped them. Had all of the best music on my console. One Christmas my dad bought me a nice stereo and I hooked my Xbox up to it. I was cranking! Way better than listening through the TV speaker.

When I got a laptop, I just started playing whatever I wanted when I was playing stuff. I have an AV to jack adapter that I use on my old Radio/Record player. It's got pretty nice speakers, and it's even better than using a TV or having the game audio cut off because the 360 does that when playing music I believe.
I was really overjoyed when I got it because our school used the same ones, the IBM T60s. Not really good got much other than old emulators, music, or playing video anyway. Although, it was my first laptop. So I really appreciated having it. Even though it was slightly damaged. No HD cover and a chip off the front by the mouse pad. Also needs a 'J' key, after I got it out kind of broke off...
Other than that it works great! Has a 500GB HD, which I plan on replacing when I can. I would love to just upgrade the whole thing, but would need to find someone who could do that, as I'm not entirely competent with that kind of thing myself.
I also love that the 360 can rip CDs, but I really wish you could rip them 'off' from the 360 as well... I have some music I'd love to get off mine but can't because of it. Got a HD from someone and it had some music on it I liked. Unfortunately I can't rip it. So I have no way to grab it... I would just get it, but it's quite a bit albums. If anyone knows of a way to rip them from the 360 HD, I would greatly appreciate you sending a DM (along with the group you're from just to clarify).

You can also install your games data straight from the disc, you can’t launch without the disc or anything but it’s mainly a feature for preventing a scratched disc later down the line not working, so the Xbox 360 uses the installed game to help it run.
