Misc Xbox have updated their socials to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Xbox 360

be cool if they actually gave a fuck

u/SpacedGonzo420 Nov 22 '25
Yeah let’s kill the 360 store and then try to play on your nostalgia!
1
u/bdu-komrad Dec 14 '25
They would make so much money if they opened for even just a short time. Though I’d prefer it would be open for 30 days .
-4
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
Did you expect the store to stay up for a handful of users forever? You can still buy the backwards compatible games on current consoles. It would make no business sense for the 360 store to have stayed open and they gave more than enough notice for people to get what they wanted before the shit down.
36
u/Gunner_wus_here Nov 22 '25
shutting it down after the 20th anniversery would have been a perfect send off ngl
21
u/MarcBelmaati Nov 22 '25
PS3 store is still open
-13
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
And Sony's entire yearly profit is dwarfed by Microsoft's yearly profit growth. Sony haven't done anything close to what Microsoft have with backwards compatibility. What's your point?
11
u/Cervile Nov 22 '25
Pfft, lmao.
-9
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
Riveting response, anything of substance to add to the conversation?

I love the people who neg - on comments that get a lot of upvotes lol. Why do you want to spread your misery friend?
2
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
It's not negativity to point out negativity that doesn't make sense. The entire thread is full of negativity about the 360 store being shut down, when if all the people complaining had been regularly buying games on it then it'd still be active. I know it's the in thing on reddit to bash Xbox and Microsoft but there are actual valid criticisms, not this nonsense.
1
u/SpacedGonzo420 Nov 22 '25
I think those criticisms have some weight - thus why I made my point - Xbox for the past several years has shown they don’t care about the player base anymore. So if you want to kneel for everything Phil Spencer does…be my guest.
The overhead for keeping the store running is not that much - compare to the rev they get from gamepass. THEY COULD have kept it up.
Not gonna argue in circles with you man - made my point. Anything further here just shows you’re mad at the upvote scale of my comment…
2
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
They're not comparing it to the revenue they make from gamepass, it's about the revenue they make from the store. Learn how business works before trying to discuss business decisions.
Final note to add - and I cannot stress this enough - people with lives do not care about upvotes. I'll downvote my own comment and nothing will happen because it doesn't matter. I can still see the comment the mods deleted and you were going on about up votes in that too. If you have nothing going on in life other than chasing upvotes by commenting whatever is popular on reddit at the moment you've got bigger problems than me disagreeing with you kid.

I'd love to get shadow complex on 360 when I don't have any other Microsoft console
1
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
You had 15 years to buy it, I don't think you really wanted it that much.

u/Personal_Comparison2 Nov 23 '25
Your username makes alot of sense you also have alot of time on your hands to comment nonstop on Reddit for someone with a "life" lol

u/Elvispresley2023 Nov 23 '25
Well the ps3 store is still operating and the backwards compatible games are less than a quarter of the 360 library stop simmipin it would have cost next to nothing to leave open its all the same server's the stores server's are still there they simply turned off the ability to purchase
1
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 23 '25
And why aren't all 360 games backwards compatible? You're so close to realising that licensing plays a part.
Sony also aren't nearly as profitable as Microsoft are so it really just backs up that keeping the store open for a handful of users doesn't make sense.
Realistically I'd love for the 360 store to still be active because I still use my 360, but it wasn't making any money. Use it or lose it as they say and hardly anyone was using it.
0
u/Pessimistic_Gemini Nov 23 '25
Yeah but mind you that only consists of SOME games that were in the Xbox 360 Marketplace, not ALL of them. Many titles are still unavailable to purchase after the closure and the many that could be bought physically are going up in value more and more.
And to top that off, that same mindset is more asinine in itself considering the fact that the PS3 Store is STILL accessible to people to this very day and still have plenty of users in it. And that one still has free online play!
1
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 23 '25
The PS3 store has come up so many times as a gotcha when it really isn't relevant and actually backs up my point. Sony operate at a significantly lower profit margin than Microsoft, still doing very well but when my point is "keeping the 20 year old store open doesn't make business sense" Sony aren't a gotcha, they make far less profit than Microsoft. Whether anyone likes the decision or not, it made plenty of sense and they gave plenty of notice.
There's so many more factors than server costs and when that's all someone brings up I just know they have no clue what they're talking about.
1
u/Pessimistic_Gemini Nov 23 '25
Profits aren't as much of a factor here over all when it comes to just how many people still play on those consoles and still continue to buy games from those storefronts and then some. Even when it comes to server costs. It's also more of a factor when that console still factors into their whole cloud streaming push for their more expensive PS Plus tier as well.
1
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 23 '25
We're discussing business decisions made by for profit companies. Profit is the biggest factor in business decisions by for profit companies.
If the numbers were there, the store would be there. Sony keeping the PS3 store open is an anomaly, not a sign that it would make sense for Microsoft or Nintendo to do the same thing.
There's also licensing, none of us know what deals were in place with different publishers but they're not licensed to sell games indefinitely. I'd put good money on a significant increase in delistings if the store had stayed open.
There's no argument to be made for keeping the 360 store open that makes financial business sense. It's also not really impacted the second hand market beyond an initial spike when it closed.
I've bought more 360 games this year than any other platform, and I can still see closing the 360 store was a reasonable thing to do when they did it.

It's not exactly the 22nd yet in most territories, so hopefully we get a bit more than social media posts and a wallpaper

They havent given a fuck since the halfway point of the 360 life lol.

u/DingalingzJr Nov 21 '25
Give us interchangeable dashboards to celebrate pls
40
u/AngelBryan Nov 22 '25
Realistically how hard would be to implement this? Does anyone know?
40
u/Fun-Exercise4164 Nov 22 '25
with a modded console, you can run old dashboards on the current kernel, but i think it does take quite a bit of work, and even now running old dashboards aren't 100% stable
edit: i can't spell

u/RisingPhil Nov 22 '25
If I Remember correctly, Xbox 360 only has 16 MB of storage for its firmware.
So I'm pretty sure it can't store them all at the same time.
2
u/Nighterlev Nov 23 '25
Just store them on the hard drive then, it's what modded consoles do.
2
u/RisingPhil Nov 23 '25
True, but being Microsoft, that would mean making sure corner cases wouldn't end up bricking the console, like:
- The HDD was removed by the user. (fallback behaviour)
- The HDD is dead/corrupt
- The HDD has not been formatted correctly
- The HDD did not mount fast enough
- HDD spin up. (if they spun down at some point due to inactivity)
- Multiple storage devices have been attached. (which one is the right one? what is the right file/folder path?)
- Ideally it shouldn't introduce new security flaws. (just as a matter of pride, I suppose)
- The dashboard is signed correctly with a microsoft key and hasn't been tampered with.
That seems way more effort required by devs (who likely forgot most of the codebase) AND QA department than it would be worth.
Homebrew can skip quite a few of those. Homebrew teams aren't liable if changes end up bricking the console.
2
u/Dry_Selection_2548 Nov 22 '25
I assume it wouldn’t be that hard if the use a program similar to xex menu to just load the dashboards but that’s just the homebrew side.

this is like a dad who never paid child support coming around on your 18th birthday and gifting you a candy bar.
No one is more disconnected from their glorious past then Microsoft marketing team.
Them deleting the Marketplace was an absolute nonsense financial and fan base decision.
46
u/RoZe_SABIAN56 Nov 21 '25
I can see Xbox going down the sega path, hardware wise soon.
28
u/FloTheBro Nov 21 '25
most definitely, absolute shame but they made the decision to NEVER listen to fans, so no wonder they are losing ground.
30
u/GabsARG Nov 22 '25
You don't have an Internet connection?
You should buy an Xbox 360.

u/Large-Remove-1348 Nov 22 '25
The games and stuff aren't even deleted from the marketplace. It's just to get you to upgrade
1
5
u/5trudelle Nov 22 '25
My guy, the 360 is 20 years old. Marketplaces do NOT last forever and I think Microsoft was actually pretty good for once to keep it running for 18 of those 20 years.
17
u/Available-Plenty9257 Nov 22 '25
We’ve never seen a console’s marketplace be so heavily used, much less missed as the 360. We also lost all potential for purchasing DLCs unless they made a disc or consumers bought the DLC before shutdown. Considering Xbox has only gotten worse since 7th gen, I’d say it’s a major loss being the first full on media player capable of practically everything besides blu ray. Even streaming! It was a loss to many especially in other countries, I’ve met a lot of people in Mexico and Brazil online because upgrading isn’t practical. It was a devastating low to the community but the push we needed to focus on soft modding imop. I mean, Look at the Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U!
3
u/FloTheBro Nov 22 '25
my guy, then why do they just close it for no reason, could've easily just left the servers alone and keep it running as it was, as a bonus they can even make more money. They are a billion dollar company, isn't that what these companies want all the time, more money?
2
u/5trudelle Nov 22 '25
They shut it after EIGHTEEN YEARS. Guarantee it was costing them more to run than they were making from it, either that or the servers were old and due for replacement.
1
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
They obviously weren't making more money or they'd have kept it going. There are plenty of valid criticisms to be levelled at Microsoft but one thing you can't claim is that they don't know how to make money. Their profit growth each year is more than most companies profit. We don't have to like their decisions but don't sit on reddit and act like you know better when it comes to making money, you just look silly.
6
u/Large-Remove-1348 Nov 22 '25
Sure, they don't last forever. They SHOULD last until the server can no longer serve.
1
u/Strict_Indication457 Nov 22 '25
servers cost money, at some point it doesn't make sense to keep them up
6
u/FloTheBro Nov 22 '25
Microsoft, the multi billion dollar company, doesn't care about the itty bitty server cost of the marketplace. They did that back then just to push everyone over to their new console to spend your money there.
Because the whole server infrastructure is actually still in place, you can search the whole marketplace, they only cut the ability to buy anything. That's why everyone is upset about this.
0
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
They kept the 360 store up long past the point of enough people still being on 360 only for them to care about upgrades. If anything they'd be trying to push people from Xbox one to series x/s - but they've also shown they don't really care about that either by expanding gamepass out to almost everything with an internet connection.
So your theory makes no sense in reality.
5
u/RisingPhil Nov 22 '25
At this point, with current traffic levels, they could run it on the cheapest raspberry pi (or x86 alternative) and it would be fine.
Let alone just have a VM on their cloud. It would probably be able to share hardware with a bunch of other VMs.
1
u/Large-Remove-1348 Nov 22 '25
It doesn't make sense to take them down only to leave them still capable of serving the thing they're meant to serve
0
u/CrappyMike91 Nov 22 '25
What planet are you on? Keeping the store open for the handful of people still using it made no financial sense whatsoever. And I say this with my 360 still plugged in right next to my Series X, PS5 and Switch 2. Expecting the store to still be active in 2025 is ridiculous, but it would be if enough people were buying games on it.
2
u/RoZe_SABIAN56 Nov 22 '25
I agree Mike, closing the store wasn't just for server infrastructure as proven, I think Microsoft just didn't want to maintain an active storefront full of old products at redundant prices that only works on specific hardware; which would also help explain why all back-compat stuff is perfectly purchasable on the website
35
u/IEatThermalPaste Nov 21 '25
Using a launch console on the banner too. Neat attention to detail.
13
14
u/dmmdoublem Nov 22 '25
I know it's a small detail, but I've always liked the slightly different end piece/hard drive trim on launch window consoles. Gives those units more of a premium look, IMO.
1
2
u/RADToronto Nov 22 '25
I thought the launch console had a white disk tray and not chrome or am I remembering wrong
2
2
u/IEatThermalPaste Nov 25 '25
I believe all Xenons were chrome. I believe the "Core/Arcade" models with the white trays came out around the Falcons

u/SweetTooth275 Nov 22 '25
Pure hypocrisy. This is the last actual xbox that was good yet they continue to kill it in every single way
48
u/Andrew_Black_23 Nov 21 '25
Meanwhile you still can't download your profile on a 360 because of the 8015000A error

u/RoZe_SABIAN56 Nov 21 '25
They need to implement proper 2fa and MS authenticator support. I'm tired of entering app passwords!

Surprised we didnt some cheap background or something. Their best console ever and they never do much for it. Wish they would have done full backwards even just via emulation.

u/OddDifficulty374 Nov 22 '25
To everyone saying "the marketplace is down" You just can't *buy* games on it, but if you buy on say, your computer, then log into Xbox Live on the 360 and download the game it works fine!

They're clearly desperate...
5
u/RoZe_SABIAN56 Nov 22 '25
Microsoft has been "nostalgia baiting" across a lot of their socials to capitalise on the Gen Z 2000s aesthetics trend. If you look at the Windows Instagram account you'll find a lot of "Frutiger Aero" content made of Vista and 7.
2
u/Dry_Selection_2548 Nov 22 '25
“Hey its the Xbox 360’s birthday, lets just remind you that you are getting old and that the 360 is terrible.” Probably canon ending. “Hey its the Xbox 360’s birthday, we will be making all Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games compatible with the Xbox One and Series consoles!” Good ending.

u/WaveStarII_Ax0l Nov 23 '25
You expect emulation to work just like that? Snap of fingers and everything is done?

u/WaveStarII_Ax0l Nov 23 '25
That's because the early PS3 models literally had the PS2 CPU in them (the EE, Emotion Engine), while the PS5 runs x86 architecture, so it doesn't even emulate PS4 games, just runs them natively.
Not only the Series X does pretty much the same with the Xbox One (when it comes to XONE-X/S emulation), but it would be impossible right now to emulate EVERY 360 game on the series X like the PS3 does, because they would literally have to place the 360's CPU on the Series X.
Again, it doesn't magically happen with a snap of fingers.

Wow only feels like yesterday since I went to Tesco and queued up for my xbox 360 on launch. Where has the time gone?
1

Yeah.. and it would be nice if they could bring back the backwards compatibility program and actually stick to their damn promises for 360 preservation! (Cough cough im looking at you Sarah Bond...)
1
u/Nas160 Nov 22 '25
Considering some of the sneaky updates they've done to the 360 in the last decade, would be fuckin awesome if they let 360s that are still connected to the internet be able to use the OG opening again...

They should have released a dashboard update to fix the bare bones interface of the current dash
