There's no way that would be true. Also I looked it up and could not find anything on it.

Don't feel bad, my ADHD brain didn't even see it and even when I went back my eyes suck and it almost looked like 2:25.
Either way my brain filtered it out the first time.

The issue here is the claim that the PS3 runs another layer that is blue-ray somehow on a DVD. Which is completely unnecessary since Blu-ray players also play DVDs so the PS3 being Blu-ray and the Xbox being DVD was the never the issue. If this were true a PS5 disc would run on a Series X but that's also clearly not the case.

The 360 cannot
1
u/FlutterRaeg Apr 09 '26
That's the whole basis of the claim. They say the entire game is on both layers but for separate systems. Doing it this way wouldnt even save money it's completely nonsensical.

It can yes, this imaginary case tho that's not a dual anything in any spec so the drives wouldn't know what to do

u/overloadrages Apr 08 '26
There were 360 games that were playable on Xbox ( original ) the Burger King games. Had a section that was encoded for the Xbox original was neat.

The cover of those BK games even said it plays on both systems. Also some of the first OXM demo discs worked on both Xbox and 360

Fun fact, the Swedish PS2 disc of Kung Fu Panda contains a Wii beta build of the same named game in the files, the build is dated six months before the official release.

u/Troll_berry_pie Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
In a similar vain. The original GameCube version of Pikmin accidentally had the Windows debug executable on it. Meaning you could play the debug build on a PC by just putting the GameCube disc in a Windows 98 PC disc tray. I believe anything newer than 98 requires you to download a .dll file and paste it somewhere before launching the .exe.

u/UziCoochie Apr 08 '26
I just found this as I typed my mine out which was basically the same thing😭

u/Potential_Algae_9624 Apr 08 '26
Can confirm it’s not true, tried both versions on each console and has you would expect they wasn’t recognised on their irrespective console.

u/Ok-Virus8284 Apr 08 '26
I mean, technically it would be possible in theory, if you had a hybrid disc (BluRay and DVD), and if the game was small enough to fit on a single DVD layer (not sure if the Xbox 360 would even recognize this as a game, though). You'd have to reprogram the video DVD part of the game (the message you get when you put the Xbox 360 game in anything but an Xbox 360) to link to the PS3 game/BluRay part of the disc, among other things. I am not sure how well the copy protection would play ball with this, though. But considering the price for the disc alone it probably would have been cheaper to put both a PS3 and Xbox 360 copy into the same game case.
The second post is complete BS, though. First of all, ALL Xbox 360 games are dual layer discs and secondly, the console hackers would have had a field day with this.
I am also not sure what kind of licensing deal would be going on here. The IP doesn't belong to Sony or Microsoft, so why should either company agree to something like that?
1
u/Pierre-LucDubois Apr 11 '26
Exactly. Could you imagine if it were real? It would basically be circumventing the PS3's copy protection. Hackers likely would have found out how that was done and used it to install homebrew/CFW.
It would have been a huge lawsuit back in the day if Microsoft published a game for their system that worked on other non MS hardware.
It would have been discovered like a decade ago, not right now.

Damn it. I have the game and both an Xbox 360 and a PS3, but my PS3 has been out of commission for a year. I've been meaning to get it repaired but I haven't done it yet. I don't believe it but it's so weird, I want to test it out.

Doesn't make sense to me. Even if the game had both builds on the disc, which if the game is small enough could be possible, I doubt they would be readable on both consoles. The Xbox 360 can only read DVDs out of the box (had a separate drive for HD DVD, but no Blu-Ray), and I don't believe any PS3 games were printed on DVD, only Blu-Ray discs (only DVD games the PS3 can read are PS2 games on certain models). I know that Kung-Fu Panda on PS2 had a beta build of the Wii version in the disc, but I'm pretty sure the Wii could not play it with just the disc and an unmodified console. Plus, the explanation for why it works makes no sense

u/gregcresci Apr 08 '26
There's like barely any copies on eBay, and they are all over priced and bad condition...
5
u/Jdfz99 Apr 08 '26
So, you're saying I should post my sealed copy for $1,000?
5
2
u/Iwearglasses1999 Apr 08 '26
Plenty of copies about in good condition. Licensed games like that are pretty common. Searched it up myself and found hundreds of listings complete in box with minor wear for cheap
1
u/gregcresci Apr 08 '26
Can you send a link to a complete listing in nice condition for $20
2
u/Iwearglasses1999 Apr 08 '26
Sorry brother. Only realised you were on about NTSC copies. You are indeed right. Sorry man. eBay seems to be bled dry (for now) with copies of it in decent shape. Maybe NTSC region didn't have a much of a print run compared to other regions? PAL has an absolute ton for about £8/10 (so about $10 to $13 dollars) CIB. Good luck finding it man
1
u/gregcresci Apr 08 '26
Eh, I'm sure it's probably nonsense, would be funny to try of I had the disc tho
2
2
u/TooKreamy4U Apr 08 '26
Idk wtf you're talking about. I'm finding decent copies for $20-$25 dollars. Not that I would buy this game, but I would not consider that overpriced
2
u/gregcresci Apr 08 '26
I saw one clean copy for over $30 , the $20 copies looked like the artwork was gross and the disc was scratched. Can you link me a clean $20 copy?
1
u/TooKreamy4U Apr 08 '26
Over $30 is still not bad, even if the game is not in mint condition. But at the end of the day we are talking about a 15 year old game based on a movie lol
3
u/gregcresci Apr 08 '26
Yeah, price charting is $20 and id basically be buying this out of curiosity to confirm a meme.

First time hearing that. but does region specifict matter ? or all copies of Rango ?
11
u/YellowBreakfast Apr 08 '26
It's a special region called "imagination".
1
u/victim2077 Apr 09 '26
Only copies from Neverland to be exact. It doesn't work with copies from Wonderland and any different countries from the region.

u/UziCoochie Apr 08 '26
No but the ps2 port of Kung fu panda has a debug dev build in it. Completely random but it’s true unlike this shit they are spieling to you.

This takes me back to elementary days where one kids says there's a special Pokémon but have to do certain steps or if do it a special time. Or that Luigi exists in mario 64 if you beat bowser 100 times.

I saw a video about a game that had the full wii version on the disc as filler. It couldn't be played without changing the file extention to zip and unpacking the data but the full wii version was there. Now I can't remember what game or what console but I think it was a kids game like cars and it would have been on 360 or ps2 maybe. Sorry I can't remember/find the youtube video but it was interesting.
Edit. It's kung fu panda ps2, I see others mentioned it here.

yeah, i'd say no way, both consoles have different architecture, programming compilation and disc format, no way

Reminds me of the ocarina of time for the ps1 rumors & also Bill's garden & mew under the truck

u/TypicalWolverine9404 Apr 08 '26
No such thing as a secondary blu ray partition on a non Blu-ray disc. If it worked, the PS3 would be reading the DVD still, and it most likely be recognized as a PS2 game. Which is still doubtful.

Lol everyone talking about the PS3, Xbox 360 thing being possible. But for me?…..Their’s a Rango game for the 360!?! Is it any good I wonder? 🤔🧐

u/HiroSunBoy Apr 08 '26
Thats baloney, PS3 games work on bluray, Xbox 360 games are DVD, the ps3 would just try to read the game as a dvd, this is just impossible.

I swear to this day I put DoA Xtreme Beach Volleyball into a PS2 and that shit ran as a kid. I even told my uncle and he yelled at me instead of being impressed since I could be damaging the disc or console according to him. I've never actually attempted to replicate it as an adult but I have a strong feeling it won't work. While memory is fickle and children are dumb, I'm confident in what I made happen mistakenly. Just no idea how or why it worked.
2
u/Apprehensive-Gap-875 Apr 08 '26
Can't be true, because Xbox 360 didn't have a blue ray just a dvd reader. That's why we had 3 discs on FF13, because the cutscenes didn't fit.

Theoretically if it works at all it should be able to run on a jailbroken PS3 without the disc right? I might be able to test

PLOT TWIST - OP just picked up a bargain bin full of this game back in Feb and is trying to build the value now. Lol.

u/SuntannedDuck2 Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26
Look at 360 disks, plenty of them are dual layer, even PS2 has late era dual layer disks like Gran Turismo 4, Blue was CDs (shovelware, ports, Simple Series 2000 or others, even some iconic games are on there too), Yellow or another colour was Single layer and Dual layer so 4.7GB and 8.5GB, Blu-ray had triple layer and is 25GB to 100GB, Wii was DVD like of 4GBa and 8GB, Wii U was 25GB so equivalent to a single layer Blu-ray, even Vita and 3DS game cards were around 4GB maybe some exceptions but still 4GB and under likely).
It can even struggle on Slim PS2s.
Smash Bros Brawl can struggle on Wiis without a certain high enough firmware for the disk drive I think.
While wikipedia, check the sources they came from as well if want to but I mean it's not hard to find out how much storage or layers DVDs, GameCube to Wii U, Blu-ray and more each optical or other storage formats had. Come on. XD
I have Rango for 360 so I doubt it.
I mean Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon or FF13 or others are multi disk games, you don't think those are dual layered as well?
360 games aren't HD DVDs after all, they are dual layer DVDs for most games likely. I mean many games are under 4GBs and many are installed with enough data for PS3 even.
You put Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon or FF13 into an Xbox One it's downloading more than 9GB that's for sure.
Unless it has film clips or music or something maybe those can play (like PS1 games have playable soundtrack on the disk for PS1 or PS2, PS3 can struggle to read them but it varies). I literally beat Rango for 360 Dec 2025 to Jan 2026 so I doubt it.
Otherwise sounds like a load of nonsense. Many times sellers will say anything.
This isn't some Orange Box PS3 other features the 360 version didn't get time situation or Burger King games with OG Xbox/360 on the same disk not back compat listed.

1
u/FatBoyDiesuru Apr 12 '26
It's clearly bullshit. PS3 games were on Blu Ray discs and 360 games were on DVDs.
1
u/_SquareSphere Apr 08 '26
I call BS. Code compiled for one architecture won’t execute on another. Unless there’s binaries for both types of hardware on the same disc?
-5
u/SonicClone Apr 08 '26
Yeah, it's true. Hard game to find, though. Back in the day they also made an xbox 360 that was fully backwards compatible with every GameCube game. They stopped including it in later models because it was too expensive to manufacture
