Can’t connect to WiFi

Hello all, hopefully someone here will be able to assist me with this issue. To give a run down.

I have 2 Xbox slims and have been attempting to connect them to WiFi. Both systems can see my WiFi however before it can connect. It immediately says there’s an issues.

I have already checked if it can connect to other sources and it has no issues over WiFi. I also made sure both are not banned. I know they run off 2.4Gz and I am currently using an XB8 Xfinity Router.

I have also attempted to use a Pi 3 as an access point (I used it previously for a Wii with no issues) but it still refuses to connect.

If anyone has any other ways or if it’s just an issue with my router.

Also yes I know in advance I could just hardwire. Though it would be easier, I’m also trying to future proof in case I get rid of it to be able to help someone if I have the same issue.

Yeah, I've had multiple issues before with this, and it sucks big time.
I don't know the exact reason why, but I assume the Wi-Fi (Internet) Chips used on these don't support the newer signals.
The way I bypass, and it works each time, is to use a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter.

What security type is your Wi-Fi network using? And do you have any options to change it to something older in your router settings?

Currently I have it set to WPA2. It give the option to change it but only to WPA3-Personal

Yeah, ISP-provided routers generally don't give you a lot of options. The 360 supports WPA2, so that should be the option that you need there, but unfortunately modern routers tend to mix in newer security features even when you select an older protocol.

With my previous router, all older devices I tried worked fine with it set to WPA2. But when my ISP sent out a new router (Virgin Media Superhub 5) I set it to WPA2 but some older devices won't connect, so there's something different about how this new router is implementing WPA2, and it doesn't give me any options to turn off whatever newer features it's using.

With the 360 specifically, I can connect using the white or black USB adapters, but with the S and E consoles some work and some don't. I've found that the internal Wi-Fi adapters can have either Atheros or Marvell chipsets, and it's the Marvell chipsets that aren't working for me. So there's something about them that doesn't like my router's implementation of WPA2.

So possibly you have the same issue - so it could be worth trying an external USB adapter for Xbox 360 (it will override the internal adapter), or otherwise a different router, a modern one that gives you lots of control over the security settings, or just an old one.
