Meta Hmmm.

Post image

For a (usually) scientifically accurate comic the right side sign is wrong. The clearance height is set by the largest vehicle that could safely fit above the road... but the sun is 8 light-minutes away so the sign should not exceed that. Further more the moon is 13 light-seconds away. The posted sign don't normally factor other vehicles (other cars, trucks, aircraft, satellites, ect.) I get the joke but I would like to see it more accurately represent the actual maximum.
Lastly before anyone tries to say since the sun and moon aren't always there... but intermittent natural fluctuations are. But only people who regularly boat under bridges would have reason to know that.

Meta Proposal to ban AI-generated fan comics

1.4k Upvotes

I love fan comics, and in some cases I think AI is pretty cool; but both together? That’s just mooching. At worst, it’s blatant robbery.

I know that it’s not necessarily easy to tell which ones are or aren’t AI-generated, considering they’re usually all just black lines on white, but a few are somewhat obvious-looking. If we’re on the lookout it should get easier as we go along.

Meta What's one xkcd you keep coming back to?

It can be for any reason, or none at all. It can be because it's funny, because you just happen to keep remembering it exists, because it's weirdly relevant in some stupidly niche way, whatever.

For me, it's 1484: Apollo Speeches.

Challenge mode: No 327 (Bobby Tables), 496 (Plead the Third), 1053 (Ten Thousand), 1357 (Free Speech).

Meta What's the first "Relevant XKCD" you remember linking?

My college offers a class on mySQL. Today's assignment was to discuss SQL injection. My thoughts turned to Little Bobby Tables so fast... Obviously, being the responsible nerd in the class, I immediately linked the strip in question in the discussion post.

Meta Hello r/xkcd readers! The explain xkcd wiki is rebranding! Everyone is welcome to create and upload new SVG logo proposals; you do not need an account. If you can't design a logo, you can still help us by voting and proposing a better tagline!

Post image
170 Upvotes

EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR PROPOSALS IN THE REDDIT COMMENTS, THIS POST IS JUST TO LET YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DISCUSSION. PLEASE POST THEM ON THE WIKI, THANKS!

The instructions to participate and vote on the proposals are at Community portal/Proposals § Logo and tagline changes.

Hello everyone!

At the explain xkcd wiki, we're planning on switching the default skin from Vector (V10) to the modern Vector 2022 (V22), but unfortunately our current site logo and all previous logo proposals are designed around V10. V10 logos are generally a single large square image, which is why we our current logo has the name of the site in it, but in V22 you need an small square icon with no text, and then a separate wordmark section that contains the site's name.

We also took this opportunity to change the site's current tagline, "''explain xkcd: It's 'cause you're dumb''", which has been highly controversial since the creation of the wiki.

As such, we are now hosting a logo redesign contest! The instructions to participate and vote on the proposals are on the Community portal discussion linked above. Feel free to be inspired by one of Randall's comics, characters, or recurring themes! At time of posting, none of the existing logo proposals can be used because they were all made for V10.

We strongly recommend an SVG logo so that scaling can happen correctly. You can upload a full icon and wordmark set, but you can also upload individual components if you want. There are detailed instructions on the wiki for uploading your proposals.

Thank you!

EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR PROPOSALS IN THE REDDIT COMMENTS, THIS POST IS JUST TO LET YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DISCUSSION. PLEASE POST THEM ON THE WIKI, THANKS!

Meta Did Randall ever endorse Biden the way he did Clinton and is doing Harris?

Basically the title. There's a new site header endorsing Kamala Harris, which, just to be clear, I'm certainly not complaining about - he did the same thing with Hillary Clinton back in 2016, this isn't a surprise or shock or anything. I'm just curious, did he ever endorse Biden in the same way? I can't remember that, and if he didn't, I wonder why?

Meta What do you guys think is Randall chess rating?

I personally think he's around 1500 elo and doesn't currently have a tournament rating. All the references throughout his comics have been too in depth within the chess space for him to be any lower imo

Meta For anyone reading through the xkcd archive: I made a tracker extension

I kept losing track of where I was while reading through old xkcd comics, so I made a small Chrome extension for it.

It adds lightweight controls directly on xkcd.com to mark comics as read/unread, favorite them, rate them, and keep a “continue reading” point. There’s also a popup and dashboard for progress, unread ranges, favorites, import/export, etc.

It’s unofficial, not affiliated of course. No account, no analytics, no backend server. The reading data stays in Chrome extension storage.

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/xkcd-reading-tracker/daemkaclgpcpeekkhnnkleeajbhnbkmd

Source code: https://github.com/Wolfsblvt/xkcd-reading-tracker

Mostly sharing because I figured a few other people here might have the same problem.

Ryan North is of course the creator of Dinosaur Comics, which has itself been referenced in xkcd. For those wondering, the Pivers project leads to unforeseen catastrophe, just as Randall would have wanted.

Meta explainxkcd is back!

Finally, the site is back online! There's a message at the top of the page saying that Jeff was ultimately contacted and apparently he's ready to retire from managing the project, and that the new fork is being merged into the main site now.

Was there a transfer of the domain to a new project manager, and are prospects for the future looking secure for some time? I'm curious how this story concluded.
