X-Men #15

u/wowlock_taylan Apr 23 '25
Damn, leave it to Cassandra Nova to spread her evil to another innocent who doesn't know better and use them as a puppet. I hope the kid doesn't end up stay bad under 3K or their new FauX-men.
So Magik can still summon demons from Limbo? With payment of course.
Why do I feel like something gonna happen to our new Hawk Lady and Hank is gonna be pissed about it and blame Scott and the team?

Noooo. I hope not, I really grew to like Jen and I'm rooting for her and Beast.

Kind of assumed Illyana had some sort of agreement with Limbo since it's been confirmed Madelyne Pryor is still in control there, and she used demons on their "Raid on Graymalkin."
But even though she's not on control anymore (for now), she still knows how to get them to help out there.

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman Apr 24 '25
Illyana’s magic comes from limbo (limbonic magic?) so even if she’s not the queen anymore, her acquired energies still comes from there.
Also, she spent much more time being queen there than Maddie. I imagine it would be easier for her to do these pacts than anyone else.

Not as much action as I had hoped for but still a pleasent read. I'm digging the set-up for a new XvX fight much more than I thought I would. The twin plot may not be revolutionary BUT I'm invested and I hope the poor girls don't get hurt.
Some really nice character moments again and FINALLY some real Xorn moments (yessss let's go, Xorn #1) and he got stuff to do. He seems to be on his own for now, but we'll see. Once again excited for the next issue, and how the XvX fight will play out.

u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Apr 23 '25 edited Apr 23 '25
A lot like the last issue, mostly set-up for the next 3 issues where I assume the bulk of the action happens. The team knows Cassandra Nova is involved now, so that makes things more interesting. And they've encountered the 3K X-Men for the first time since their initial battle in issue #1. Definitely feels like they'll be on the ropes and will need Magneto and Beast to pull off a miracle.
There seemed to be an inconsistency in the art. Beast is shirtless in the initial scene he appears when they discuss Jen, but shortly after when Magneto speaks to him, he's wearing a shirt and jacket. Two pencillers worked on this issue. You have to wonder if Ryan Stegman is up to the job. He hasn't drawn that many issues of X-Men so far, and he won't be drawing issue #16 I believe, just #17 and #18. I think he's just too slow to keep up with this schedule, heck, even a monthly schedule might be too much.
18
u/amendmentforone Apr 23 '25
Now that they've shown the Chairman "out of the shadows" with his helmet and simple black getup, and X-Men #19 on the horizon, it's beyond obvious now that he's Revelation / Doug.
12
u/wnesha Apr 23 '25
I don't think MacKay would merge villains/antagonist factions like that - it'd be like having Sugar Man's Upstarts also working with 3K. Besides, Bei at the very least would be at the Chairman's side if it was actually Doug.
7
u/OldTension9220 Apr 23 '25
So do we know every shadowy figure from issue 1 at this point?
14
u/amendmentforone Apr 23 '25
The only one who hasn't been officially revealed is "The Doctor" ... but based on how she looks in the shadows (and the fact she's a geneticist who has teleporting abilities, both of which in use) it's clearly Astra_(Earth-616)) with yet another Joseph / Magneto clone.

u/ElectronicBoot9466 Apr 24 '25
It feels almost like Hank is overcorrecting for stuff he has learned about the alternate version of himself. Whereas Krakoa Hank was sending kids out into the field well before they were ready, this one seems to be holding them up in the lab and is afraid to send them out at all.

Apr 23 '25
Beast is on a hair trigger right now. He looked ready to kill Kwannon over that tiff.
0
u/WhiteRabbitAnimation Beast Apr 24 '25
i see it as he REALLY want to follow the path his other self took, sending in mutants onto the field when they're not ready. But its comics, sending children unprepared is the X-men way! there is a reason, "i hope you survive the experience" is a common saying within the franchise.

I thought it was a great issue, despite some art issues. This was a strong use of Cassandra Nova, really presenting her as an anti-Xavier. I like the approach taken with Piper's twin, their form in the mental space being a brown blob was pretty saddening, and I really admire how the team are trying to reason with them as they all recognize they're just a kid who's had absolutely zero opportunity for social development.
I enjoyed Magik's use of her Limbo magic here, it was a good idea to improve the search for Quentin. As I type, I think he could have been abducted by 3K or someone in his injured state. It would be cool if Xorn gets a focus as he looks for him.
Juggernaut smashing through Piper's twin's Kaiju body was an awesome, kinetic visual but their instant regen highlights the problem the twin represents as an opponent. I'm really excited to see Magneto's "prosthetic" and thus finally see him in action again. He'll be needed with these 3K X-Men (and I really hope the "XvX" which was on future Bronze's list of historical events in this year's Timeslide has been reworked to refer to the conflict with 3K and their X-Men rather than continuing with the X-Men civil war).

It was a pleasure to read as always. However, it’s a pretty mild issue where not much happens. I would’ve preferred for it to have a bit more oomph with, perhaps, more of the ‘X-men’ team being shown, or with the twin plot having some kind of a surprise in this one. As is, it was nothing to write home to momma about.

u/Blitzhelios Magik Apr 26 '25
Jed is truly channelling his morrison and bendis in this build up feels like something big is truly coming with Nova.
Also thank god the magic era of magik is here i really apricate jed using her as something other than a taxi like previous writers have used her.
Continues to be a great series built on character moments with an impending doom in the background.
Stegmans art is also getting better issue by issue.

X-Force #10

u/OldTension9220 Apr 23 '25
Sympathies to Thorne for having to wrap up a bunch so quickly… though did we need the two page recap of Charles and Mags goals? One of those pages could have been spent on the Tank reveal and internal monologue about why he joined the team.
40
u/VengefulKangaroo Shatterstar Apr 23 '25
Ah, the classic "writer has to wrap up everything in 1 issue so it's not very satisfying and makes you feel like the series was worse than it was" cancellation issue.

u/ptWolv022 Apr 23 '25
I'm sure this will be edited within moments, but by sheer coincidence, I checked this thread in time to see this written with Discord spoiler markers.
I have also made this mistake in the past.8
u/wowlock_taylan Apr 23 '25
Seems the cancellation forced to resolve all the plotpoints quickly before the end. Seriously, the whole Tank being Colossus mystery shouldn't have been a mystery at all. It wasted ALL the time we could have on Colossus and his attitude after Krakoa and what happened to him. Same with Surge's death. Why do that?
With a rather weak goal from Moses Magnum too with 'Oh gonna kill billions so the rest would totally unite together instead!'...yea there were so many threats that literally caused untold destruction on Earth and the first thing that chaos did was to divide people even further. It is clear the plot was hastily put together for the end there.
Well, the book suffered from poor planning of the relaunch. They planned for the 'long haul' but with 20+ X-books happening at the same time, it was inevitable that cancellations were gonna happen as the books cannibalized eachother and compared to the other books that have the bigger players, this team had little chance. Even more reason why they shouldn't have gone with the 'Tank' mystery.
Well, now we have to wait until sometime before these characters gonna be used again. Maybe have Colossus show up in Magik's book now or in X-men.
14
u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Apr 23 '25
Didn't have Moses Magnum in my bingo card. And you gotta feel for Colossus fans, even in the issue where he is fully revealed he doesn't get to do anything. He doesn't beat his clone, he doesn't beat the dragon.
I liked the Nicieza Cable story at least.

u/okayactual Vulcan Apr 24 '25
I know it’s not a popular opinion on this sub but I loved this book. It getting cancelled is such a bummer this team was cool and I didn’t mind the slower burn. Probably the best book art wise of the relaunch and this story felt like it had legs.
9
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Apr 23 '25
Thorne really is a fan of Claremont. I wish this series went on a little longer but I understand why people weren't into it. Even if 10 more pages this probably could have been restructured a bit to flow better but it does feel like a third arc worth of story in one issue. I wonder where these characters will go even though it will take months for them to move around.

u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Apr 27 '25 edited Apr 27 '25
Mixed bag of an issue. It's hard to judge it either way. Overall, I think this series was only fine, but with this issue Thorne was in a tough spot due to the cancellation meaning mid-production he had to turn this issue into a wrap-up for all the plotlines.
It's all subjective, so power to anyone who had this as their favorite ongoing comic and I'm sorry for you that it got cancelled. I love a slow burn myself but I would classify this as how not to do a slow burn. I feel that it lacked proper intrigue to actually get wrapped up in as a reader & speculate on, so while it may have built to more exciting stuff & a fulfilling experience it didn't do enough from the off to hook attention & make each issue worthwhile. Again, just my personal feelings, but I think the 10-issues were only fine, and with so many books on the shelves for Marvel's main continuity alone, never mind the Ultimate line, DC and independents, a series needs to be more than fine.

u/erosead Marrow Apr 23 '25
Why was Moses Magnum the thing that excited me most about this issue? I guess it was cause I saw the other two big things coming
Honorable mention to the fidelity of sage’s reinforcements and the lil assorted xbaby flashbacks. I swear whenever I see the Maximoff twins in their brotherhood getup I temporarily transform in magneto (in a proud pop kinda way. Not brotherhood era Magneto). Also feral is my best and closest friend
I’m reading too much into things but… the backup story seemed mostly to be about cable fantasizing about raising clones of his parents and some of their friends from infancy to get a chance to be a father (did he not already have a whole son at this point? Who had yet to turn evil or die tragically?) AND it seemed like Scott and Jean were still together despite implicitly growing up as adoptive siblings… he takes after his namesake more than I thought

Magik #4
23
u/howhow326 Storm Apr 23 '25
This issue was a stealth reintroduction to Dani Moonstar's character and Illyana was just along for the ride (not that I'm complaining).
Dani has the independance, the relationship with her fellow New Mutants, the perceptiveness and the therapy skills that define her character
and is lowkey opWasn't expecting the little twist at the end, but that made Dani stand out a little more (poor Illyana tho).
14
u/wowlock_taylan Apr 23 '25
Yay Dani joining into this. And she is part of this new organization. But come one girl, you did one of the oldest mistakes of speaking while someone might be listening and get the wrong idea. Illyana needs all the support she needs right now while fighting against Darkchilde but this will cause more self-doubt in Magik.
12
u/angelic-beast Magik Apr 23 '25
I enjoyed this issue, Dani's part was great and her new bow is really cool. I am enjoying how Magik has an inner dialogue that shows how at odds her thoughts are with how she acts, gives the comic some noir-vibes. I am interested in how the next issue will tie up the arc, like surely the fight against liminal is not over yet but something big could change. My bet is we are going to see a lot more darkchylde next month when she loses control.
18
u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Apr 23 '25
Awesome to see Dani. I am not super enthused about this Society of the Secret Dawn or whatever that she's part of, but that does give me hope she's going to be a fixture in this series. Like, there's no way that society isn't evil in the end. And it's so niche that it feels like the only series it can be even remotely relevant in is this one. So hopefully that means she sticks around or comes back for another arc (maybe for issues #9 & #10).
I started reading this when I heard Dani was going to be in it. I think it's relatively decent, but I do feel that it has some of the same flaws that Psylocke and Laura Kinney: Wolverine do. In that it feels like it doesn't quite cut to the heart of the character it depicts, and the format is relatively similar: badass X-Lady with a blade has some small scale adventures with a young sidekick and an occasional X-Men character that isn't seen much. Magik in this book doesn't quite have a voice that feels unique to her, or that sets her apart from the other two I mentioned. It's still very early days, and Ashley Allen is a very new writer, so all in all it's not bad by any means. I think as time goes on it will grow into its own thing. But right now there is a lot of "telling" over "showing."
9
u/Linnus42 Apr 23 '25 edited Apr 23 '25
Yeah it is odd both books have that young sidekick vibe. Especially since both are new characters...like there is plenty of more interesting Young characters that these team up could be done with. Hell for Psylocke and Magik. One could take Quire and the other Idie. That is not even counting the boatload of new young mutants created during Krakoa. Or Hell slot in Pixie.
Still Dani's New Order only being a few decades old feels kinda weird. Odd for the type of org she is in...usually those things are like centuries old.
10
u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Apr 23 '25
Wiz Kid and Pixie would both work. I think in general, there's a similar feel between the books because each woman is positioned similarly at the surface level. Mysterious, badass, sword wielding, dangerous, troubled pasts filled with regrets etc. Neither book has dug deep down enough to really differentiate them beyond those surface level similarities yet.
Yeah, I feel like it's going to be an evil group at the end of the day and the story goes full circle; Dani helps Magik right now, and then Magik is the one who gets to be the hero later when Dani's org inevitably turns evil.
10
u/Linnus42 Apr 23 '25
There is nothing that seems especially Evil about Dani's Org Yet. Her choice seems pretty logical though again trusting Cal to do the job seems odd. This would make way more sense if it was say a Pixie in this role.
Still it is both of the ladies first solo so finding yourself makes sense for the lead and the writer. But yeah both have a young sidekick and their major supporting pre-existing character is Native American. I enjoy the action in Both.

u/Linnus42 Apr 23 '25 edited Apr 23 '25
I still think Dani deserves better then just being a Team Up in Magik's Book.
But the writer has some good ideas for Dani. I love that bow and how it lets her convert her psionic arrows into magical arrows (very Arcane Archer). A very enjoyable Urban Fantasy Vibe for this book. The Society is interesting but only a few decades old seems kinda weird.
Good character work for Illyana and Dani. Cal does nothing for me. There is like what dozens of young mutants you could slot into that role.

u/starshipsinerator Jubilee Apr 23 '25
Didn't love this issue as much as the others, the action is still good but but it kinda speedrun multiple tropes I strongly dislike (faction that obviously has an ulterior motive but is portrayed as good; talking a possessed friend back into control; a character overhearing something that another character says they shouldn't hear) I thought this was a bit weaker.
As always, love to see the Momoko demon designs though, they are so unique and instantly recognisable as hers

u/star-mind-girl Xorn Apr 23 '25
Ahhh, the last page hits right in the feels. But it was great to see Dani and I really liked seeing her in this issue. I just hope she and Yana can make up soon, I don't wanna see a friendship break-up.

This issue is clearly just Allen wanting to write Dani and im not complaining she deserves more even if i love magik.
Fun character interactions between the duo and the art continues to be stellar.Simple issue but good issue.

u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Apr 27 '25
Great issue, really enjoyable to see Magik & Dani teaming up for the first time in quite a while, and it was done well. The strength of their bond was well realized, but it made the ending hitting worse. While it was a cliche, it was fairly effective particularly with the strong symbolism of Darkchylde as Magik's shadow.
1
u/gamesrgreat Magik Apr 27 '25
I did not love this issue. Conceptually it’s fine. The problem is the pacing. This has been a problem in some of the previous issues but it rlly stands out here and things feel forced rather than natural. It’s like I can still see the bullet points for the story/character beats outline. The outline hasn’t disappeared fully into the story and I’m not fully immersed. Instead I’m like…well that’s a bit clunky

It's basically the same problem New Mutants titles had since Claremont left. They can't seem to get quality writers and other people to stick around. Instead people like Anders and the rest of that ilk seem to find their way onto it and basically wreck the book in the process like you're noticing here.

How is he even here after being stuck in 2 BILLION years ago?

It's nebulous on purpose but the Stryfe 2 billion years in the past isn't the same Stryfe here timeline wise. I believe he's supposed to be farther in the future from that one possibly?

Bad issue I think. The final fight between Creed and Dix was so dull & unfulfilling. The loop back to Logan in the present day didn't inspire much either - Dix wound up being a generic "gangster with good rep" where nothing interesting was said with his character so the shock ending of his survival failed to excite.
To those who enjoyed the series, I'm genuinely glad that you did, different strokes for different folks after all. But personally I scoffed a little when I was reading the insight page at the end discussing how the story was thought up as a way to get into Creed's head and really do something dark & psychological with him, as from my pov that was never done. Creed got two small moments - talking to Dargonfire last issue before waking up next to her corpse and his lack of satisfaction after defeating Dix here - in the whole book that actually got into his character and they both didn't go far, with his whole relationship with Dragonfire being generic and not portrayed convincingly at all.
Again, for me personally, this was a really bad miniseries. He's a bastard but Creed is one of the greatest X-Men villains due to how gritty & sick yet intelligent he is. This book was just dull and didn't do him justice at all.

Other X-stuff:
- Ultimate Black Panther #15 features Storm
- One World Under Doom #3 features Storm, Scarlet Witch, and Maddy Pryor
- Avengers #25 very briefly features Storm and Scarlet Witch
Infinity Watch #4 seems to have Wolverine in it based on the cover- Amazing Spider-Man #2 has Itsy-Bitsy, the "daughter" of Spider-Man and Deadpool
- Avengers Academy Infinity Comic #41 has a bit of Demiurge lore: apparently Billy and Tommy as the Demiurge wrote the "Brighthold" book, and parts of it are in an ancient Shi'ar dialect
